AFL rocked by sudden death of Adam Selwood - just months after his twin brother Troy passed away in February

Daily Mail17-05-2025

The AFL has been rocked by the death of Adam Selwood aged 41.
One of four Selwood brothers to play AFL football, Selwood played 187 games for West Coast, winning a premiership in 2006.
His wife Fiona Selwood said in a statement via the AFL: 'We are heartbroken by the passing of Adam earlier today. Words cannot express the grief and sadness we feel.
'Adam was a loving husband, and an incredible father to Lenny and Billie. We are devastated to lose such a wonderful husband, father, son and brother.
'We will miss Adam deeply — his spirit, his kindness, and the joy he brought to every room. 'His determination, the lessons he shared, and his infectious personality will stay with us always.
'Adam had a unique ability to make people feel special, and our family was lucky to experience that every day.
'We kindly ask for privacy as we navigate this difficult time.'
The shattering news comes just months after Adam's twin brother Troy died in February.

Every game is significant for the Socceroos. But, obviously, these last two games, for automatic qualification, we know what we need to do; we need to put that into action, and we're confident we can do that. Here is where things stand: The general gist is the Socceroos can all but secure their place with a win tonight; a draw or loss make things a bit more complicated. has broken everything down in more detail here: Even if they win tonight, we won't know whether Australia have qualified automatically for absolute 100% fully certain sureness until after the Saudi Arabia v Bahrain match kicking off at Friday 2am AEST. Update: Date: 2025-06-05T10:00:45.000Z Title: Preamble Content: G'day and welcome to the Guardian's live coverage of the World Cup 2026 qualifier between Australia and Japan in Perth. My name is Jo Khan and I'm here to take you through the pre-game news, live football and some post-match analysis. At the moment my brain hurts from thinking about the Group C permutations and what it means for Australia but one thing is locked in – the Samurai Blue have already booked their spot at the North America tournament. However, it is most definitely a crunch match for Australia, can they lock in an automatic qualification? Looking back to the Socceroos most recent outing in this Asian qualifying campaign, it was goals from Jackson Irvine and Nishan Velupillay that gave Australia a crucial 2-0 win in China in late March. This solidified their spot just below Japan in the Group C table – I'll get to those details shortly. To the task at hand now, if you have any comments or questions feel free to send me an email. Kick-off is in just over an hour: 7.10pm local / 9.10pm AEST / 8.10pm JST Let's get into it!

Braith Anasta opens up for the first time about the moment he thought he'd have to punch Latrell Mitchell in the face

Braith Anasta has revealed that he and Latrell Mitchell are on good terms following their frosty spat at a fancy Sydney restaurant last year. But the Fox Footy pundit revealed he had become worried that the South Sydney Rabbitohs star's anger could tip over the edge. The pair found themselves in the spotlight after Mitchell is understood to have confronted the NRL 360 host at Chin Chin, an Asian fusion restaurant located in Sydney's Surry Hills last May. Anasta, 43, had been critical of Mitchell's recent form, with the South Sydney star having believed some of the broadcaster's critics to have been too personal. Mitchell had approached the former Sydney Roosters star, who was dining with a friend. Both stood firm on their opinions and agreed to disagree and it is reported that the pair continued their disagreement in private, but the stand-off did not turn physical, despite Anasta revealing he had feared tempers could flare. 'I was thinking in my head, I can't let him land the first one because I'll be gone, because he's a beast,' Anasta said to The Daily Telegraph. 'I'd be lying if I said at some point, I didn't think it might happen. I can understand what he was going through and I can understand how frustrating it is when people have an opinion and you just want to play footy.' But it appears the pair have made amends since. 'Okay, let me get something clear here – before I tell it, me and Latrell are fine,' the former Roosters five-eighth explained. Their disagreement came after the Rabbitohs had complained to Fox chiefs that NRL 360 had been unfair on their stars. Anasta's criticisms came as the Rabbitohs slumped to the bottom of the ladder in 2024, following a dismal season that saw the Bunnies lose nine matches. Anasta, meanwhile, told his version of events from that evening in the restaurant, arguing that Mitchell could have called him and he would have happily addressed his complaints over the phone. 'It's not about putting shit on him. I don't want that. But what actually happened was, I finished NRL360 and … by Wednesday night, I just want to have a beer, and have something to eat and just relax,' the 43-year-old said. Anasta, who had coached Mitchell in the U20s, claimed he 'always had a good relationship' with the Rabbitohs star. But he revealed he had not had a chance to order, before Mitchell had approached him, to voice his grip. 'He goes: "No, no, no, no. I'm sick of you having a crack at me on 360, yada, yada, yada". I'm thinking: "Is he joking here, or is he serious?" 'And he goes: "Let's go outside". By that point, people are looking at us, right? It's the middle of Chin Chin's. It's a busy night. I thought, I need to de-escalate this, or at the very least, I need to get this out of this restaurant, right?' 'We go out the front and he just lays, he lays into me, right? He's standing over the top of me and he's having his whack. 'I'm like, man, okay, slow down. Because there was nothing making sense. It was just abuse. I said: "Mate, what am I doing that isn't right? Is there something that I'm wrong with? Can you just explain to me what you're angry with?" 'They were coming last at the time. I don't know if it was a week or two before, but I'd shown some vision of him at fullback.' Anasta explained: 'There were just a few instances where I thought he could be better. 'In that instant, he was over the top of me. I didn't back down at all. I gave as good as I got.' During an episode of the program, Anasta had questioned why Mitchell was playing fullback. 'You look at the great fullbacks in our game ... they are there before the play is there,' he said. 'They pre-empt it, they are moving before the ball goes, they are on their bike. 'Latrell ... he gets caught out a lot in defence, he's very rarely in the frame at the last second when there's a try or when he's got an opportunity to save a try. 'That's where he needs to improve. That comes down to fitness... and being one of those high-energy fullbacks. He plays differently.' But a year-on from that incident, Mitchell is currently playing out of his skin for the Rabbitohs and was a stand-out during last Wednesday's State of Origin opener. Mitchell notably set up Brian To'o for the try of the match, utilising his exceptional handling skills to find the flying NSW winger on his outside for the Blues' second score of the the Bunnies, Mitchell has five try assists across seven appearances so far this season, while he has also touched down twice himself, amassing a goal-conversion rate of 87 per cent.

Olympic star Ryan Lochte's wife files for divorce after seven years of marriage

Olympic icon Ryan Lochte opened up on Wednesday after his wife of seven years announced that she has filed for divorce. Kayla Reid and the gold medalist swimmer, 40, have three children together, and on Instagram she said her decision came after 'deep prayer and reflection.' Lochte also shared a statement of his own. Lochte wrote: 'I want to take a moment to acknowledge what Kayla shared. 'This past year has brought major changes for both of us as we've come to the difficult decision to end our marriage. I'm deeply grateful for the life we've built together and especially for the love we share for our three children.' He continued: 'Although this decision hasn't been easy, I believe it's the right step toward peace and well-being for us both. I remain committed to healing, growth, and co-parenting with care and respect as we move forward separately. 'Thank you to our family and friends for your continued support - it truly means a lot as we begin this new chapter.' For her part, Kayla detailed the 'painful' decision to split from the olympian. She wrote: 'I hold marriage in the highest regard, so this has been one of the most painful, revealing, and challenging seasons of my life. 'I've been hesitant to share until I could do so from a place of healing - not from fresh, open wounds. 'Sometimes we face trials we didn't choose or see coming. And in those moments, we're forced to make the hardest decisions to protect our peace, our children, and our future. 'I've come to the understanding that staying isn't always the most loving decision someone can make. For me, leaving was an act of love - for those around me and for myself.' The couple have son Caiden, 7, daughter Liv, 5 and nearly two-year-old daughter Georgia. According to court records cited by People, Kayla filed for divorce on March 26. Alongside the Instagram statement Kayla shared a boomerang video of herself gazing into the distance as she sat outside. She added: 'Living with transparency and authenticity has been how I have grown into the person I am today, and I'll continue to do so - while also protecting the parts of this journey that are private and unfolding in an unchartered territory.' Kayla, a former Playboy Playmate, concluded her statement by saying she was 'choosing to give herself grace,' while asking for support and prayers from her followers. Lochte and Kayla met in 2016 before becoming engaged in the fall of the same year. Lochte and Kayla married in 2018, with People reporting at the time that they wed in Palm Springs, California. The swimmer, who has not formally retired from competitive swimming despite not making the last Olympics, said in 2019 that the sport was his 'second priority' after his family. Lochte served a 14-month ban from the sport for his use of a prohibited IV infusion, and also spent six weeks in rehab for alcoholism. He decided to get help after an incident at a hotel in California where police were called after he tried to kick his door in, though no arrests were made. The swimmer's attorney said he had been battling alcohol addiction for 'many years,' and Lochte later said his stint in rehab made him a 'better man.' On the subject he said: 'I'm glad that I went to rehab and got checked out just because it helped me out. 'It helped put things in perspective in my life. What is really more important than going out to a bar and getting hammered or doing anything like that, I go home and I get to play with my kids and kiss and hold my wife. That, to me, is everything.' He was also thrust into controversy during the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, after he claimed he and three teammates were robbed at gunpoint after a night out. It was Later revealed that the armed men were actually security guards and several details of Lochte's story were fabricated. He was charged with submitting a false report to police, but charges were later dismissed after he apologized. Last year, Lochte also revealed he was involved in a severe car accident which left him with serious injuries. He added that he had spent the last ten months recovering from a crash that occurred last November and broke his 'femur in half.' On the Athletes Only podcast he revealed that he crashed into a truck while on his way to pick up his children from school. The swimmer explained that a garbage truck had been parked in the middle of a busy four-lane street with no lights or cones to indicate that it had stopped. The car in front of Lochte managed to swerve the vehicle but the athlete wasn't successful in avoiding it and 'ran into the damn thing.'
