Sportsbooks continue rooting against Duke in all-chalk Final Four

Reuters31-03-2025

March 31 - With all four No. 1 seeds reaching the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 17 years, Duke is the favorite to best the rest.
Early odds updates after the conclusion of the Elite Eight on Sunday pegged the Blue Devils as the clear favorites over Auburn, Houston and Florida in the race for the national championship.
Duke will play Houston in one national semifinal this Saturday in San Antonio, with SEC rivals Auburn and Florida colliding in the other.
BetMGM lists Duke as the -110 favorite to win the championship after starting the season at +1100. The problem for BetMGM is that Duke carries far and away the largest handle (40.5 percent) and the most tickets (14.1 percent), making the Blue Devils their No. 1 liability.
"All one-seeds reach the Final Four for just the second time in the NCAA Tournament and the first since 2008," BetMGM trading manager Christian Cipollini said in a release. "The tournament has gone in the bettors' favor with favorites consistently winning. The sportsbook is cheering against a Duke-Florida final."
One notable bet reported by BetMGM saw $500,000 placed on Duke to win the national title at +350 odds.
Florida is responsible for the second-largest share of the tickets (9.1 percent) and the handle (11.7 percent) at the sportsbook.
Elsewhere, Duke was the +105 favorite to win the title at FanDuel Sportsbook and +110 via BetOnline.ag.
Auburn, despite being the top overall seed in the tournament field, finds itself with the longest odds to win it all. The Tigers are +500 at BetMGM, FanDuel and BetOnline.ag.
Auburn beat Michigan State 70-64 in the South Region final Sunday shortly after Houston defeated Tennessee 69-50 in the Midwest Region final. Both of those games pitted No. 1 seeds against No. 2s.
On Saturday, Florida rallied for an 84-79 win over No. 3 Texas Tech in the West Region final and Duke ran away from No. 2 Alabama 85-65 in the East final.

Scheff can cook up victory to add US Open to his honours list

Golfers at this week's US Open at Oakmont may wish to say a few prayers before they tackle one of the toughest courses in the world and bid to stop Scottie Scheffler edging closer to winning all four majors. It's the tenth time in 125 editions the Pittsburgh venue has hosted the tournament and it has gained a fearsome reputation, chiefly because of the formidable rough, slick greens and Church Pew bunker which sprawls across the third and fourth holes. But world No.1 Scheffler is an even bigger obstacle for those chasing glory, the Jack Nicklaus Medal and the £3.19million cheque handed to the man whose name tops the leaderboard after 72 holes around the daunting par-70 course. Scheff may have taken time to hit top form after suffering a hand injury at the turn of the year but he's back to his best after winning three of his last four outings, starting with an eight-stroke victory at the Byron Nelson, a five-shot triumph at the US PGA at Quail Hollow and a four-shot romp at the Memorial. Basically, those figures show that if he's playing at the peak of his powers nobody is going to get close and he can win a fourth major, following the US PGA and two Masters successes at Augusta, then turn his attention to achieving the career Grand Slam at next month's Open at Royal Portrush. Don't expect low scores at Oakmont. Dustin Johnson won the US Open with a course record of just four-under par the last time it was held at the track near the ominously named Dark Woods in 2016. That means pinpoint accuracy and nerves of steel are required for success and Scheff, who is also the FedEx Cup leader, has those qualities in abundance. Yes, he's extremely skinny at no bigger than 11/4 with Betfred, BetMGM and Unibet but we'll back him because there's nothing better than having a few quid on the winner. Value seekers can get stuck into the each-way value claims of Ben Griffin, second behind Scheffler at the Memorial, winner of the Charles Schwab Challenge and eighth at the US PGA in his last three starts, at 50/1 with Ladbrokes and Coral. More Trending Also play the hot hand of Sam Burns. He may have lost Sunday's Canadian Open play-off but hit a last-round 62 to get there and he's 55/1 with the same two firms, who offer the same price on Harris English. He finished tied 12th at Augusta and T2 at Quail Hollow. Sadly for Rory McIlroy fans, the Northern Irishman is struggling with a new driver, missed the cut at last week's Canadian Open and cannot be backed to add to his thrilling, Grand-Slam-competing win at the Masters. Shane Lowry just missed the cut for our US Open betting fourball, but he has been in decent form with a tied second at the Truist Championship and is worth an each-way flutter to be the first-round leader at Oakmont at 40/1 with BetMGM and Unibet. The Irishman is also 6/4 with Betfred for a top-20 finish. Meanwhile, Aaron Rai has the all-round smarts to feature prominently at Oakmont and is 7/1 with William Hill and Betway to be the top English golfer at the US Open and 7/2 with BetMGM and Unibet for a top-20 finish. ESPN signs Dick Vitale to extension, creates annual event in his honor

Additionally, ESPN unveiled the creation of the Dick Vitale Invitational, an annual men's college basketball event that will honor the color commentator and former coach. The inaugural Dick Vitale Invitational will feature Duke against Texas on Nov. 4 at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. REQUIRED READING: The 2025 NBA draft deadline has passed. Who are the college basketball winners and losers? "I couldn't believe it when I got the call from ESPN," Vitale said to ESPN. "They said, 'we want to have a big game called the Dick Vitale Invitational.' I said, 'are you serious?!' All of the people at ESPN, starting with (ESPN chairman) Jimmy Pitaro, and all of my friends and colleagues have been so great to me especially with my recent battles with cancer. They've been by my side from day one and to do this is unbelievable. Long after I'm gone, to still have a game out there with my name attached to it? Wow, that is truly unbelievable!" Vitale has been with ESPN since 1979, joining as a college basketball analyst shortly after the network went on the air. During that time, he has called over 1,000 games and become synonymous with ESPN's college basketball coverage with his high energy, colorful personality and famous catchphrases. His latest contract will stretch his ESPN tenure to nearly 50 years. Vitale's on-air work has earned him induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame. In April, he received the Dean Smith Award, which is given out annually by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association to "an individual in college basketball who embodies the spirit and values" of the iconic former North Carolina coach. Vitale has been a more infrequent presence on ESPN over the past several years as he has undergone treatment for various forms of cancer. He called his first game in nearly two years in February, when Clemson upset No. 2 Duke. "Dick is the heart of college basketball, and his kindness, generosity and courage are a constant inspiration to us all," Pitaro said in a statement. "Through the creation of the Dick Vitale Invitational, we will celebrate him and his profound impact on the sport. We are also thrilled that Dick will remain a signature voice on ESPN through the 2027-28 season."

Scottie Scheffler heavily backed favorite to begin U.S. Open week

June 9 - Scottie Scheffler has won three of his past four starts, including the most recent major at the PGA Championship, so it's little surprise that he began U.S. Open week as the heavy pre-tournament favorite. Scheffler's short odds aren't dissuading the public so far. The No. 1-ranked player in the world is being offered at +275 at DraftKings, where he leads the field with 31 percent of the total bets and 33 percent of the money backing Scheffler to claim his first U.S. Open title this week. The next closest is two-time U.S. Open winner and defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, who has drawn 14 and 22 percent of the action, respectively, at +900. Interestingly, world No. 2 Rory McIlroy has received modest support with only 3 percent of the total bets and money while sporting the second shortest odds at +850. McIlroy won't his first Masters in April but missed the cut at the RBC Canadian Open after posting a T47 at the PGA Championship. The story has been largely similar at BetMGM, where Scheffler is the book's biggest liability as he leads the way with 31.3 percent of the money backing him while he odds have shortened from +500 to +275. DeChambeau is the second-biggest liability thus far, drawing 16.7 percent of the money and seeing his odds shift from +1400 to +750. However, McIlroy remains firmly in the picture at BetMGM. He is the third-biggest liability, having been backed by 8.4 percent of the money at +1200. The Northern Irishman opened at +900. Also seeing his odds lengthen is Xander Schauffele, who has struggled to regain the form that saw him claim a pair of majors last year. He opened at +1100 to win the U.S. Open but was sitting at +2200 by Monday. Perhaps no player has seen a bigger shift than Brooks Koepka, the two-time U.S. Open champ who opened at +1800. Having failed to win on the LIV Golf tour this year while missing the cut at the Masters and PGA Championship, Koepka's odds at BetMGM have ballooned to +6600. Another popular choice at both books has been young Swedish star Ludvig Aberg. He has yet to win a major, although he did finish second at last year's Masters and T12 at the U.S. Open. Aberg, who has posted a part of top-20s since missing the cut at the PGA, has drawn 4 percent of the total bets and money at +3500 at DraftKings. He also sports somewhat longshot odds at +2500 at BetMGM, where Aberg has been backed by 5.6 and 3.9 percent of the action, respectively, since opening at +1600. --Field Level Media
