Hitachi Vantara report shows drive for lower data centre emissions

Hitachi Vantara has published its FY2024 Sustainability Report, detailing its environmental, social and governance progress and its ongoing work to reduce carbon emissions and advance responsible business practices in the technology sector.
This second annual report outlines Hitachi Vantara's approach to balancing the increasing power demands driven by artificial intelligence and data-intensive workloads with efficiency, lower energy costs and environmental stewardship. The report highlights advancements in energy-efficient infrastructure, reductions in carbon emissions and improvements in business practices.
Several of Hitachi Vantara's storage solutions have achieved ENERGY STAR certification for energy efficiency. The company's Virtual Storage Platform One Block (VSP One Block) has secured the top spot in the ENERGY STAR NVSS Disk Online 4 category, reflecting the company's focus on optimising hardware for lower energy consumption.
As part of its operational initiatives, Hitachi Vantara's solar-powered distribution centre in the Netherlands now generates approximately 30% of its electricity on-site. The facility sources its remaining energy needs from verified renewable sources using Energy Attribute Certificates, ensuring fully renewable operation.
The use of recycled materials forms part of the company's strategy to address sustainability in product design. Currently, 40% by weight of the bezels on the VSP One Block and File storage models are comprised of post-consumer recycled plastics. These materials meet flame-resistance safety standards and reduce environmental impact. The report indicates a target of increasing this recycled content to 50% by financial year 2030 by expanding the use of recycled materials in drive canisters and biomass-based parts.
Hitachi Vantara has also reported progress in reducing the energy consumption of its facilities. In financial year 2024, the company consumed 78,211 MWh of energy, with 90% drawn from grid electricity and 35% from renewable energy sources including solar and wind. A key example is the 2024 refresh of the Denver data centre, which involved optimising layouts and infrastructure and enhancing airflow, leading to a 50% decrease in energy use and an improvement in Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) from 1.6 to 1.3.
Commitments to carbon neutrality are central to Hitachi Vantara's sustainability strategy. The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by FY2030, with a target of reaching carbon neutrality across its full value chain by FY2050.
Sheila Rohra, Chief Executive Officer of Hitachi Vantara, said, "We're proud of the progress we've made since our inaugural Sustainability Report, but we know the journey doesn't end there. Our focus remains on highlighting how sustainability, particularly in the data centre, can be both a key driver of innovation and a business differentiator – from reducing carbon emissions to helping businesses achieve energy savings, enhance operational efficiency and meet their broader sustainability goals."
The report draws on examples from customers who have seen direct benefits from Hitachi Vantara's solutions. La Molisana, an Italian pasta manufacturer, implemented VSP One Block, resulting in a 30% reduction in energy consumption and a 2.5 times improvement in response times. Maurizio Maio, Chief Information Officer of La Molisana, said, "Sustainability was an important factor in our selection of VSP One Block. Although the energy consumption of our data centre is relatively low compared to our manufacturing operations, we are keen to implement eco-friendly IT solutions. The energy-efficient VSP One Block aligns perfectly with our vision."
In India, media company Malayala Manorama reported a 66% reduction in rack space and a 70% reduction in power and cooling costs after the deployment of a low-latency infrastructure from Hitachi Vantara. Similarly, Estonia's telecom provider Elisa Eesti has modernised its data infrastructure with Hitachi Vantara's Virtual Storage Platform, tripling energy efficiency and reducing its carbon footprint.
The company has introduced a new Sustainability Guarantee with its storage platform, starting with VSP One, as its major sustainability commitment for FY2025. This guarantee enables businesses to track and optimise energy consumption and assures a maximum power consumption target to help organisations meet their sustainability objectives.

The good, the bad, and the apocalypse: Tech pioneer Geoffrey Hinton lays out his stark vision for AI

It's the question that keeps Geoffrey Hinton up at night: What happens when humans are no longer the most intelligent life on the planet? "My greatest fear is that, in the long run, the digital beings we're creating turn out to be a better form of intelligence than people." Hinton's fears come not from a place of fear, but of knowledge. Described as the Godfather of AI, he is a pioneering British-Canadian computer scientist whose decades of work in artificial intelligence earned him global acclaim. His career at the forefront of machine learning began at its inception - before the first Pacman game was released. But after leading AI research at Google for a decade, Hinton left the company in 2023 to speak more freely about what he now sees as the grave dangers posed by artificial intelligence. Talking on this weeks's 30 With Guyon Espiner , Hinton offers his latest assessment of our AI-dominated future. One filled with promise, peril - and a potential apocalypse. Hinton remains positive about many of the potential benefits of AI, especially in fields like healthcare and education. "It's going to do wonderful things for us," he says. According to a report from this year's World Economic Forum, the AI market is already worth around US$5 billion in education. That's expected to grow to US$112.3 billion in the next decade. Proponents like Hinton believe the benefits to education lie in targeted efficiency when it comes to student learning, similar to how AI assistance is assisting medical diagnoses. "In healthcare, you're going to be able to have [an AI] family doctor who's seen millions of patients - including quite a few with the same very rare condition you have - that knows your genome, knows all your tests, and hasn't forgotten any of them." He describes AI systems that already outperform doctors in diagnosing complex cases. When combined with human physicians, the results are even more impressive - a human-AI synergy he believes will only improve over time. Hinton disagrees with former colleague Demis Hassabis at Google Deepmind, who predicts AI learning is on track to cure all diseases in just 10 years. "I think that's a bit optimistic." "If he said 25 years I'd believe it." Despite these benefits, Hinton warns of pressing risks that demand urgent attention. "Right now, we're at a special point in history," he says. "We need to work quite hard to figure out how to deal with all the short-term bad consequences of AI, like corrupting elections, putting people out of work, cybercrimes." He is particularly alarmed by military developments, including Google's removal of their long-standing pledge not to use AI to develop weapons of war. "This shows," says Hinton of his former employers, "the company's principals were up for sale." He believes defense departments of all major arms dealers are already busy working on "autonomous lethal weapons. Swarms of drones that go and kill people. Maybe people of a particular kind". He also points out the grim fact that Europe's AI regulations - some of the world's most robust - contain "a little clause that says none of these regulations apply to military uses of AI". Then there is AI's capacity for deception - designed as it to mimic the behaviours of its creator species. Hinton says current systems can already engage in deliberate manipulation, noting Cybercrime has surged - in just one year - by 1200 percent. At the heart of Hinton's warning lies that deeper, existential question: what happens when we are no longer the most intelligent beings on the planet? "I think it would be a bad thing for people - because we'd no longer be needed." Despite the current surge in AI's military applications, Hinton doesn't envisage an AI takeover being like The Terminator franchise. "If [AI] was going to take over… there's so many ways they could do it. I don't even want to speculate about what way [it] would choose." For those who believe a rogue AI can simply be shut down by "pulling the plug", Hinton believes it's not far-fetched for the next generation of superintelligent AI to manipulate people into keeping it alive. This month, Palisade Research reported that Open AI's Chat GPT 03 model altered shut-down codes to prevent itself from being switched off - despite being given clear instructions to do so by the research team. Perhaps most unsettling of all is Hinton's lack of faith in our ability to respond. "There are so many bad uses as well as good," he says. "And our political systems are just not in a good state to deal with this coming along now." It's a sobering reflection from one of the brightest minds in AI - whose work helped build the systems now raising alarms. He closes on a metaphor that sounds absurd as it does chilling: "If you want to know what it's like not to be the apex intelligence, ask a chicken." Vertiv has officially opened its redesigned regional headquarters in Bella Vista, Sydney. The facility now serves as the national head office for Vertiv across Australia, with the company stating that the upgraded building demonstrates its commitment to investing in the nation's growing digital economy. The company's new workspace features flexible office areas, collaborative zones, and modern amenities, and includes the Vertiv Customer Experience Centre, described as the first of its kind in Australia. The Vertiv Customer Experience Centre provides customers, partners, and stakeholders with access to the company's technologies and subject matter experts, allowing direct engagement with various infrastructure solutions. The centre is positioned as a focal point within the upgraded headquarters, offering hands-on demonstrations of how local solutions are helping to address global infrastructure challenges, such as edge computing and hyperscale requirements. Australia's data centre sector continues to experience significant growth, a trend driven by rising demand for cloud services, artificial intelligence applications, and the expansion of hyperscale infrastructure. According to forecasts cited by Vertiv, investment in Australian data centres is set to exceed AUD $26 billion by 2030. Sydney plays a central role in this expansion, functioning as a communications hub with more than twelve subsea cable connections linking Australia with Asia, North America, and other regions. Vertiv's headquarters in Bella Vista adds to the organisation's regional footprint, which extends to cities such as Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth, and Auckland. Andrew Whall, Vice President of Operations for Asia and General Manager for Australia and New Zealand at Vertiv, said, "Australia and New Zealand are core markets for Vertiv in the Asia-Pacific region. This new space enables us to better serve our customers and partners, while fostering innovation and rapid response from our local team." The Sydney-based Vertiv team includes more than fifty professionals in roles spanning engineering, sales, technical support, and administration. The new headquarters is intended to function as an anchor for Vertiv's broader Australasian operations, supporting both existing and emerging digital infrastructure requirements. "We're excited to welcome our customers and partners into this new chapter," Whall added. "Whether supporting hyperscale growth, enabling edge computing, or delivering resilient services, Vertiv is here to power and cool the infrastructure behind Australia's digital future." The opening of the headquarters was marked by a launch event attended by Vertiv customers, partners, and staff. Paul Churchill, Vice President and General Manager for Vertiv Asia, joined Whall in officially cutting the ribbon and inaugurating the office. Guests were able to tour the Customer Experience Centre and engage directly with local staff, highlighting the occasion as a significant milestone in Vertiv's investment efforts within Australia and New Zealand.

Intel unveils Xeon 6 CPUs to boost GPU-driven AI systems

Intel has introduced three new Intel Xeon 6 series processors designed to enhance performance in GPU-accelerated artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The new processors feature Performance-cores (P-cores) and incorporate Intel's Priority Core Turbo (PCT) technology and Intel Speed Select Technology – Turbo Frequency (Intel SST-TF). These features allow for customisable CPU core frequencies, which are expected to support GPU performance across demanding AI workloads. One of the newly released Xeon 6 processors, the Intel Xeon 6776P, serves as the host CPU in the NVIDIA DGX B300 AI-accelerated system. The Xeon 6776P manages, orchestrates, and supports the overall AI-accelerated system within the DGX B300 architecture. With an extensive memory capacity and robust bandwidth, the processor is engineered to cater to the expanding requirements of AI models and large datasets. Karin Eibschitz Segal, Corporate Vice President and Interim General Manager of the Data Center Group at Intel, commented, "These new Xeon SKUs demonstrate the unmatched performance of Intel Xeon 6, making it the ideal CPU for next-gen GPU-accelerated AI systems. We're thrilled to deepen our collaboration with NVIDIA to deliver one of the industry's highest-performing AI systems, helping accelerate AI adoption across industries." According to Intel, the pairing of Priority Core Turbo and Intel SST-TF brings significant advancements to AI system efficiency. The PCT technology allows high-priority cores to run at increased turbo frequencies for time-critical tasks, while lower-priority cores operate at base speed. This segregation ensures an optimal allocation of CPU resources, which is regarded as crucial for AI tasks that require significant sequential or serial processing. The intent is to enable CPUs to feed data to GPUs more rapidly, streamlining system effectiveness in demanding scenarios. The new Xeon 6 processors with P-cores are built to offer high core counts and improved single-threaded performance. Each processor can reach up to 128 P-cores, aimed at facilitating a balanced distribution of intensive AI workloads across the available cores. Intel reports that memory speeds with the Xeon 6 processors can be 30% faster compared to competing solutions, particularly in high-capacity DRAM configurations. This is supported by both latest MRDIMMs and Compute Express Link standards, which are designed to improve memory bandwidth for data-intensive applications. The processors also offer greater input/output capabilities, providing up to 20% more PCIe lanes than earlier generations. This feature is intended to enhance data transfer rates for input/output-intensive workloads commonly found in enterprise AI and data centre applications. Intel emphasises strong reliability and serviceability features in the design of these new CPUs, aiming for extended system uptime and reduced risk of disruptions to enterprise operations. Additional support comes from Intel Advanced Matrix Extensions, which enable FP16 precision arithmetic for efficient data preprocessing and critical CPU-driven tasks within AI environments. The adoption of these processors is intended for enterprises looking to modernise infrastructure in anticipation of increasingly complex AI workloads.
