Jones ready for 'hectic week' with club and country

Guinness Women's Six Nations: Ireland v FranceDate: Saturday, 22 March Kick-off: 13:00 GMT Venue: Kingspan StadiumCoverage: Watch on the Red Button, BBC iPlayer and online; follow live text commentary on BBC Sport NI website and app.
When Neve Jones belatedly arrives into Ireland's Six Nations camp on Monday, the hooker is hoping to have travelled with something special in her hand luggage. The reason for the 26-year-old's late arrival is her participation in Sunday's Premiership Women's Rugby final where she will seek a third winners' medal in three years when her Gloucester-Hartpury side take on Saracens at StoneX Stadium. While the use of central contracts from the Irish Rugby Football Union has kept plenty of Jones' international team-mates in Ireland, Gloucester quickly felt like home for the Ballymena woman who made the switch from Malone RFC in 2022."It feels like I only moved over yesterday but when I look back at all the memories, there's already lots of them," she told BBC Sport NI."I'm very glad to have moved here, Gloucester have been the perfect club for me."They've helped me develop all parts of my game and grow from strength to strength as a player."
Jones will again wear the number two jersey for Gloucester-Hartpury on Sunday as the side look to end Sean Lynn's tenure on a winning note.Their head of rugby will take over Wales women after the game having been a driving force behind the successes in recent seasons. "We're going to miss him. We wish him all the best going into his new job and it would be the ideal send off for him," said Jones."There's a good buzz around but we're excited to take the field and put on a performance."We'll play, hopefully win, and then fly over Monday to the rest of the girls in [Six Nations] camp and roll into another hectic week."
'We push each other to grow from strength to strength'
Ireland open their campaign against France in Belfast next Saturday with Scott Bemand's side returning to action for the first time since their successful WXV1 campaign in October. They kicked off their time in Canada with a win over New Zealand and, after a loss to the hosts, finished off with victory over USA.Having came third in last year's Six Nations, securing qualification for this year's World Cup in the process, Jones believes Ireland are "adding" to their game in each Test window."Over the last 12 to 18 months, we've grown hugely as a squad," she said."I think we always know it's going to be a challenge, but when we come in together we push each other to grow from strength to strength."Every time we come together, we're adding another layer to our game."Saturday's game against France may not be the only meeting between the sides this year, with a potential World Cup quarter-final a possibility too.Jones, however, says Ireland remain focused on the Six Nations."At the minute we're just looking at the Six Nations, that's the next thing on the calendar and we'll start with that and build into the year as it comes."After that we can look further onto the horizon, but until then we can just take it step by step."It's a very exciting time for the women's game but as players we know that come Monday it's France week and we're building in to play them."

Craig Bellamy: Wales will prepare for Liechtenstein the same way as any opponent

Liechtenstein are among the whipping boys of world football and ranked 205th out of FIFA's 210 nations. They have not won a competitive game since September 2020, and lost their opening two World Cup qualifiers in March to North Macedonia and Kazakhstan 3-0 and 2-0 respectively. 'We win the game, that's it, That's the honest truth,' Bellamy said at his pre-match press conference. 'I don't care about scorelines. We have to win, that's all we're working for this week. 'We've prepared for Liechtenstein as we did for Turkey and everyone else. It doesn't matter who we play against. 'I've watched the same amount of games on Liechtenstein as I have for every other team. My psyche can't work any different. 'I honestly believe if you disrespect the game it will catch you out. Do I understand people looking past it? Of course I do. 'But I was up late last night. I didn't sleep well. Does that tell you something? I treat every team the same. 'The same messages have been fed to the players. It doesn't matter.' Wales opened their World Cup campaign in March with a 3-1 home victory over Kazakhstan and a last-gasp 1-1 draw in North Macedonia. The Dragons know a far tougher test against group favourites Belgium lies ahead in Brussels on Monday. Bellamy has utilised much of his squad in previous double-headers since being appointed last summer. He is likely to do so again with such a quick turnaround before the Belgium game, although Leeds winger Daniel James is likely to miss out against Liechtenstein. 'Unfortunately Dan picked up an illness so we've had to separate him from the group,' said Bellamy. 'We can't afford to have any other players infected. 'We're monitoring him and monitoring the situation, but we've got cover. It's OK.' Captain Ben Davies and Brennan Johnson have joined up for international duty after helping Tottenham to Europa League glory against Manchester United. Johnson scored the winner in the Bilbao final to end Tottenham's 17-year wait for a trophy. Davies said: 'We had a couple of days celebrating, but you keep going on that merry-go-round and the next game seems to come up. 'I think Brennan has shown this year that he's a top, top player and proven a lot of people wrong. 'We've got full confidence in him in this Wales squad, that he can replicate his form at the club, here. 'We love having him around the place and I feel we've got the best Brennan at the moment.'

Uzbekistan earn first World Cup qualification, Australia, Jordan close in

HONG KONG, June 5 (Reuters) - Uzbekistan qualified for the World Cup for the first time on Thursday as a 0-0 draw with the United Arab Emirates confirmed the nation's progress to next year's finals as Australia and Jordan moved to the verge of booking berths in North America. Aziz Behich's 90th minute strike earned the Socceroos a 1-0 win over already-qualified Japan in Perth in Group C to keep Tony Popovic's side three points clear of Saudi Arabia, who won 2-0 against Bahrain in Riffa. Goals from Musab Al-Juwayr and Abdulrahman Al-Obud earned Saudi Arabia a victory that puts Australia's celebrations on hold until the two nations meet in Jeddah on Tuesday. But Australia's vastly superior goal difference means they can lose that meeting with the Saudis by up to four goals and still advance to a sixth consecutive World Cup finals as second-placed finishers behind the Japanese. Jordan also moved to the cusp of qualification as Ali Olwan's hat-trick delivered a 3-0 win over Oman in Muscat to leave Jamal Sellami's side waiting for the result from South Korea's clash with Iraq in Basra later on Thursday in Group B. Uzbekistan goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov made a string of second-half saves in Abu Dhabi to frustrate the UAE and earn his nation their first World Cup qualification since the country gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Abbosbek Fayzullaev had hit the crossbar with a 54th minute header for the visitors but it was Yusupov who frustrated the Cosmin Olaroiu-coached Emiratis, who needed to win to maintain their hopes of automatic qualification. The draw means the UAE will now progress to the fourth round of qualifying as the point earned guarantees a third- or fourth-placed finish in Group A. Indonesia guaranteed their involvement in the World Cup preliminaries would continue into the fourth round as a 1-0 win over China also ended the qualification hopes of Branko Ivankovic's side. Ole Romeny's 45th minute penalty separated the sides in Jakarta to ensure Indonesia would finish in either third or fourth place in Group C, thereby progressing to the next phase, which will be played in October.
