Strong start to reign has Brook excited for England's future
While none of England's batters managed to score a hundred against the West Indies, they had four players who contributed a half-century with Jacob Bethell's 82 the highlight in a Player of the Match performance.
But Brook hailed the efforts of England's top-order, with Ben Duckett (60), Joe Root (57) and new opener Jamie Smith (37) all looking solid against the West Indies' pace attack.
"The boys up top started beautifully and set the template for how we wanted to play and how we want to play for the rest of the series," Brook said.
"The tempo we batted with throughout the innings was pretty much spot on. We have a lot of depth in our batting, which gave the opportunity to Beth (Bethell) and (Will) Jacks to go out there and do what they did.
"I think that's the way everyone should play in ODI cricket - you've got a lot longer than you think. I got out with 20 overs to go and I felt like I was sat watching for about three hours. You can give yourself 10, 15 or 20 balls to get in and then you can soon catch up. "I think he (Bethell) was on about 40 from 40 balls (38 off 39) and he ended up striking at 140 or 150. That's the type of game it is and you can catch up very quickly."

Additionally, the United Arab Emirates opener Muhammad Waseem makes it to the shortlist due to his exceptional batting form in both ODIs and T20Is. For the women's shortlist, Hayley Matthews of the West Indies has earned recognition for her outstanding all-round performances in ODIs and T20Is during the month. She is joined by all-rounder Chloe Tryon of South Africa and batter Jemimah Rodrigues of India, both of whom have demonstrated strong performances in ODIs. An independent ICC Voting Academy* and fans around the world will now be invited to cast their votes to decide the winners. Fans are now able to vote for their favourite performers at ICC Men's Player of the Month Nominees for May 2025 MEN: Brendon McMullen (Scotland) The 25-year-old has made the cut after aggregating 233 runs and finishing with 10 wickets in five ODIs. A string of fine performances in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 including two half-centuries against the UAE and a Player of the Match effort of 101 off 88 deliveries and four for 55 against the Netherlands at Utrecht brought him into contention for the award. Milind Kumar (USA) The off-spinning all-rounder scored 201 runs in four ODIs at an impressive strike-rate of 116.86 and also picked nine wickets to be shortlisted for the award. His standout performance was a blistering 115 not out off just 67 deliveries against Canada in an ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 match in Lauderhill. He became the first player from the USA to score a fifty and take five wickets in the same ODI, when he did so against Oman. Muhammad Waseem (UAE) Muhammad Waseem showed his worth in both ODIs and T20Is during this period. He scored 169 runs in five ODIs playing as a middle-order batter in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 matches and was then named Player of the Series as the UAE defeated Bangladesh 2-1 in a T20I series played in Sharjah. Leading the team and opening the batting, he scored 54 and 82 in the first two matches of the series. WOMEN: Hayley Matthews (WI) The West Indies captain, presently ranked as the No.1 all-rounder in T20Is and second in ODIs, showed why she continues to be at the top of the ICC player rankings. The three-time winner of the monthly award scored 48 runs and took two wickets in the first ODI against England at Derby after being named the Player of the Series in a preceding three-match T20I series, topping the run aggregate with 177 runs with a strike-rate of over 137, and also grabbed three wickets. Chloe Tryon (SA) The South Africa all-rounder scored 176 runs at a strike-rate of 131.34 in three ODIs and took six wickets in the Sri Lanka tri-series in Colombo also featuring India. She scored 67 against India and had scores of 35 and 74 against the hosts. Her left-arm spin bowling was in the spotlight as she grabbed five for 34 against Sri Lanka including a hat-trick. Jemimah Rodrigues (Ind) The 24-year-old from Mumbai amassed 204 runs in three matches of the tri-series in Sri Lanka, including a useful 44 in the final against the hosts. Her 123 from 101 balls against South Africa was the highlight during this period as she played a big role in India winning the thee-team tournament. The ICC Player of the Month Voting Process: The three nominees for either category are shortlisted based on performances from the first to the last day of each calendar month. The shortlist is then voted on by the independent ICC Voting Academy* and fans around the world. The ICC Voting Academy comprises prominent members of the cricket fraternity including well-known journalists, former players, broadcasters and members of the ICC Hall of Fame. The Voting Academy submit their votes by email and hold a 90 per cent share of the vote. Fans registered with the ICC can vote via the ICC website, accounting for the remaining 10 per cent. Winners are announced every second week of the month on ICC's digital channels. Australia's two-time World Cup champion Maxwell quits ODIs
Two-time World Cup champion Glenn Maxwell is retiring from One-Day Internationals (ODIs) cricket in a bid to play a role in Australia's push for a Twenty20 world title next year. Maxwell has retired from ODI to focus on next year's T20 World Cup, the country's cricket board said on Monday. Maxwell took the decision to prioritise his preparation for the T20 World Cup, to be held in India and Sri Lanka, and his commitment to franchise leagues, Cricket Australia (CA) said in a statement. "I think back to right at the start I was picked ahead of my time and out of the blue. I was just proud just to be playing a couple of games for Australia. I thought I was just going to have that," the two-time World Cup winner said in the statement. "Since then, I have been able to go through the up and downs of being dropped, being brought back, playing in a few World Cups and being a part of some great teams." The 36-year-old has played 149 ODIs for Australia, scoring 3,990 runs at a strike rate of 126.7 - second only to Andre Russell's 130.22. Maxwell's 201 not out from 128 balls while battling cramps in a 2023 World Cup match against Afghanistan is considered the greatest knock in this format. Maxwell, who played the last of his seven tests in 2017, told the Final Word Podcast that the toll of 50-overs cricket, especially after a leg injury he suffered in 2022, affected his fielding ability during the Champions Trophy earlier this year. "I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how (the) body was reacting to the conditions," he said. "I had a good chat with (chairman of selectors) George Bailey and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward," he told the Final Word Podcast. "We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I said to him 'I don't think I am going to make that, it's time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own'." CA chief executive Todd Greenberg congratulated Maxwell for "one of the most exciting and influential one day international careers in the format's history."
