S/he Is Still Her/e: The Official Genesis P-Orridge Doc review – Throbbing Gristle's gender-challenging tabloid-baiter
Genesis P-Orridge was the performance artist, shaman and lead singer of Throbbing Gristle who was born as Neil Megson in Manchester in 1950, but from the 90s lived in the US. P-Orridge challenged gender identity but it is clear from the interviewees that there were no wrong answers when it came to pronouns: 'he', 'she' and 'they' are all used. This is a sympathetic and amiable official docu-biography in which the subject comes across as a mix of Aleister Crowley, Charles Manson and Screaming Lord Sutch. The 'P-Orridge' surname makes me suspect that Spike Milligan might have been an indirect influence, although there's also a bit of Klaus Kinski in there as well.
Genesis P-Orridge, known to friends and family as Gen, started as a radical conceptual artist, rule-breaker, consciousness-expander and tabloid-baiter who with Throbbing Gristle influentially coined the term 'industrial music', a term later to be borrowed without acknowledgment by many. They were, in the words of Janet Street-Porter, shown here in archive footage, 'too shocking for punk'. P-Orridge formed a new band, Psychic TV, in the 1980s, and then also formed a group of likeminded occultist provocateurs called Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth. (The film tactfully passes over how very annoying that spelling is.)
At the beginning of the 90s, P-Orridge and his family, including first wife Paula P-Orridge, went to the US to escape a (later retracted) allegation of ritual sexual abuse. In the US, they were the guests of counterculture figure Michael Horowitz, father of Winona Ryder, and P-Orridge's career in art, music and peripheral celebrity blossomed. After divorce from Paula, P-Orridge married the artist Jacqueline Breyer, known as Lady Jaye, with whom Gen pursued a radical project of 'pandrogynous' fusion, involving breast and lip surgery.
By the end, there is maybe a you-had-to-be-there factor with all this, and the film leaves you with a nagging feeling that P-Orridge was not seriously important in either art or music – but was pugnaciously sincere, too unselfconscious to be a narcissist and certainly a real one-off.
S/he Is Still Her/e: The Official Genesis P-Orridge Doc is in UK and Irish cinemas from 20 June.

Coronation Street star reveals she's signed a new contract to keep her on soap for another year amid cast exodus
ONE of the stars of Coronation Street has revealed that she's signed a new contract. 7 7 This is set to keep her on the seemingly struggling ITV soap for at least another year amid the cast exodus. A number of high-profile stars have left Coronation Street after a string of high-profile budget cuts. However, one star has revealed that she is very much set to stay on the cobbles, and possibly behind the bar of the Rovers. West End star Jodie Prenger, 46, first made her debut on the long-running serial drama as Glenda Shuttleworth in August 2022. She rose to fame after winning the second series of The Biggest Loser in 2006. This was before she beat out the likes of Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley to win the role of Nancy in the 2009 West End revival of Oliver as part of Andrew Lloyd Webber's BBC Talent show, I'd Do Anything. The actress soon swapped the stage for the screen as she secured a 'dream' role on the cobbles. Jodie has now revealed that she's set to reprise her popular role in more episodes of the show. She excitedly told Bella magazine: "I've just re-signed my contract! The poor things have got stuck with me for another year! "I'm thrilled. I love it there. I used to always say to my agent, 'Would you ask if I can be on Corrie?'." She added: "I was that crazy person outside, pitched in a tent, wanting to get in – and now I'm in!" Coronation Street's Jodie Prenger reveals future of Platt family after fans feared another soap legend will quit This comes following a string of high-profile exits including Helen Worth, who departed her long-running role as Gail Platt. This was after a 50-year tenure on ITV screens which kicked off a series of other long-running cast members also leaving Weatherfield. Former I'm A Celeb campmate Sue Cleaver left her role as Eileen Grimshaw behind, whilst Daisy Midgeley (played by Charlotte Jordan) flew abroad for a new life in the sun. Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) was dramatically killed off, while fans are currently witnessing the decline of Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) from Dementia. Corrie cash crisis: shock exits for 2025 ITV bosses are locked in a battle to save the cash-strapped soap. This means that a number of stars have either been axed from or have abandoned the long-running serial drama. Colson Smith - Craig Tinker The character of Craig Tinker has been axed by bosses after 14 years. After he was told of the news in Autumn 2024, Colson Smith confirmed that would be written out of the show with scenes to air later this year. Craig's on-screen mum, Beth Tinker, also left the show in the summer when actress Lisa George was written out from the role. Sue Cleaver - Eileen Grimshaw After 25 years playing Eileen Grimshaw, former I'm A Celebrity campmate Sue Cleaver will quit the show. The Sun on Sunday reported in January that she's already begun to film her exit scenes. However the character will not be killed off in case Sue opts to make a return in the future. Luca Toolan - Mason Radcliffe Bosses decided to axe the teenage character after just 16 months after he first joined the show. Recent scenes saw Mason stabbed by his criminal brothers after his pal Dylan brought a knife in an attempt to defend him. Sue Devaney - Debbie Webster In November 2024, we revealed that Debbie Webster is set to be killed off after 40 years on the cobbles. The character will die as part of a heartbreaking long-running dementia storyline. Charlotte Jordan - Daisy Midgeley The actress became the fifth star to leave Coronation Street in just one month. We revealed that she will bow out of the ITV soap later this year after four years on-screen. Charlotte told sources that she's hungry to see what other opportunities await. Shelley King - Yasmeen Metcalfe The actress has played Yasmeen Metcalfe on the cobbles for the past 11 years and we revealed in January that she finished filming her final scenes. This follows the departure of her on-screen partner Stu Carpenter. Yasmeen Metcalfe (Shelley King) also left the street to volunteer at a modern slavery charity in London after her partner Stu Carpenter (Bill Fellows) started fresh in Germany. This is after ITV slashed the number of weekly episodes of their entire soap offering. Emmerdale used to air six episodes per week, Monday to Friday with a double episode on Thursdays. Corrie also aired six episodes per week, which were spread across Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with two episodes each night. Now just five 30-minute episodes of each soap will air in what execs have labelled as the ' soap power hour'. 7 7 7 7 Coronation Street airs on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.

Pixar film 'Elio' follows a family's imperfect intergalactic journey
LOS ANGELES, June 18 (Reuters) - Zoe Saldana feels like her new film "Elio," from Walt Disney's (DIS.N), opens new tab Pixar Animation Studios, is a story about the imperfect journey that parents and their children go through. "I think it's okay to look at your kids and sort of just not know what to do, because that is a way that you can connect with your children, because half of the time they don't know what to do as well," Saldana, a mother of three, told Reuters. "Elio" debuts in movie theaters on Friday. The film follows a lonely eleven-year-old boy named Elio Solis, voiced by Yonas Kibreab, who unintentionally becomes the intergalactic ambassador of Earth after being sent to a planet called Communiverse. He must work with alien lifeforms, eventually realizing that he is not alone. Film critics have applauded the movie from Pixar, the famed animation studio behind "Toy Story" and "Finding Nemo." "Elio" has earned an 81% positive score in reviews collected on the Rotten Tomatoes website. Hollywood studios, however, have faced challenges in drawing audiences to theaters for films with original stories. "Elio" may debut with some of the lowest opening weekend ticket sales of any movie from Pixar, according to industry analysts. From Friday through Sunday, "Elio" is expected to bring in between $20 million and $30 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters, said Shawn Robbins, founder and owner of Box Office Theory and director of analytics for Fandango. Disney projects an opening around $25 million. In the movie, Saldana voices Olga Solis, Elio's aunt who takes care of him, alongside Brad Garrett as Lord Grigon, a bulky, worm-like alien warlord, father and ambassador. Garrett, a father of two, noted that Grigon has his own parenting journey in the film that starts off a little rocky. 'There's so many over-controlling parents, right? That tried to mold their kid into what they had wanted to be, or what they think they should be,' Garrett said, referring to Grigon. The "Everybody Loves Raymond" actor said "Elio" is a movie that speaks to how everyone is unique, and children have their own path. Kibreab echoed this, saying that he believes the film is rooted in families that support one another fully. "They're always going to be there for you whenever you need a shoulder to lean on and also if you're feeling doubt or feeling lonely," he said. For co-director Domee Shi, feeling isolated at a point in her life helped her create the character Elio. 'This is about the weird kid before they've made any friends, when they are just feeling so alone,' the 'Turning Red' director said. 'I feel like I went on that journey. Definitely at some point in my life as a kid too, I felt like that weird, artsy kid who was the only kid in Toronto that watched anime at some point, but once I went to animation school and I found my people, that's when I felt like I opened up,' she added.
