Elderly Indian-origin woman fined for feeding pigeons in Singapore
A 70-year-old Indian-origin woman was fined SGD 1,200 (USD 930) on Wednesday for illegally feeding pigeons near her apartment block in
Singapore
. Sanmugamnathan Shamla pleaded guilty to two counts of feeding wild birds under the Wildlife Act, reported Channel News Asia.
Eleven similar charges, including for disrupting a National Parks Board (NParks) pigeon trapping exercise, were taken into consideration.
Shamla was caught when NParks enforcement officers conducted checks near her home at Lorong (Lane) 4 Toa Payoh.

Shamla continued to feed wild birds on multiple occasions until November 2024, even after the warning. On February 19, Shamla also hindered NParks officers carrying out a pigeon trapping exercise near her home, forcing them to abandon the exercise, NParks prosecutor Lim Chong Hui said. Lim told the court that in 2020, Shamla was charged with eight counts of feeding stray pigeons. She was let off with a stern warning after she agreed to stop.
Calling her a "recalcitrant offender", he also said that the prosecution had sought a lower fine than usual, taking into account her circumstances and age. A first-time offender who feeds wildlife without approval can be fined up to SGD 5,000. When the judge told her she would have to serve two days in prison if she did not pay the fine, Shamla said: "I don't think my health can handle prison."
She paid the fine in full on Wednesday, according to the report.

Ujjain: A young man was stabbed to death on Saturday night in the Lohapul area under the Mahakal police station due to a conflict over setting up a shop during Ramadan. Indore: The Assistant Professor Recruitment Examination 2024, conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission ( MPPSC ) on Sunday, recorded only 43% attendance in Indore, while the overall attendance across the state stood at 54%. Out of 31,839 registered candidates in Indore, only 13,440 appeared for the exam at 97 centres. In contrast, Bhopal, Gwalior, and Jabalpur divisions reported a significantly higher attendance rate of 86%. Across all four divisions, about 44,000 candidates were expected, but only around 23,000 took the exam. Six cases of cheating were registered during the exam. According to MPPSC OSD R. Panchbhai Patel, flying squads caught candidates carrying smartwatches, altered pencils, erasers, and other prohibited items. MPPSC conducted the exam to fill 1,618 posts of Assistant Professor across 14 subjects in the first phase, along with 187 positions for sports officers and 80 for librarians. Officials attributed the lower turnout in Indore to many candidates being allotted centres outside their home regions. 1 2 Pune: In separate cases of online share market fraud, two private company officials from Pimpri Chinchwad collectively lost Rs 75 lakh to cybercrooks. Separate cases were registered with the Sangvi and Ravet police on Saturday. A 37-year-old resident of Ravet, who lost Rs 47.45 lakh in the online share fraud between April 4 and May 31 this year, stated in his complaint that an unknown person sent him a message on April 4 about investments in the stock market and earning good money. When the victim responded to the message, he was added to a group of investors on a mobile messaging app through a link. "The victim then went on transferring amounts to the different bank accounts, which were provided to him. He could see that he was earning good profit on his investments," an officer from the Ravet police said. He said that when the complainant tried to withdraw his money, the crooks took more money from him under the pretext of tax and commission. "After transferring Rs 47.45 lakh, the complainant realised that he was being duped and stopped responding to them," he said.
