New Delhi [India], June 27 (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday expressed pride over India being designated the host country for the 2029 World Police and Fire Games (WPFG), calling it a 'global recognition of our sprawling sports infrastructure' developed under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Taking to X, Shah wrote, 'It is a moment of great pride for every citizen, as Bharat has been designated as the host country for the prestigious 2029 World Police and Fire Games. Bharat winning the prestigious bid to host the event is a global recognition of our sprawling sports infrastructure built under the leadership of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji. Ahmedabad being selected as the venue of the event that brings together police, fire, and disaster services to compete in more than 50 sports is a testament to the city's rising stature as a sporting destination.'

According to the official WPFG website, it is an Olympic-style competition for athletes representing law enforcement, firefighters, and officers from corrections, probation, border protection, immigration, and customs offices worldwide. Held biennially, the programme features over 60 sports as official games.

Australias Steve Smith takes step closer to return, had 'few hits' in New York, confirms skipper Cummins
Bridgetown [Barbados], June 28 (ANI): Australia's batting mainstay Steve Smith is set to rejoin the squad in Barbados and had a crack in the nets as he strives to prove his fitness ahead of the second Test against the West Indies. Smith was absent during Australia's 159-run victory over the Caribbean side in the three-match series opener in Barbados, which lasted three days. The talismanic batter's absence stems from the compound dislocation he sustained on the third day of the pulsating World Test Championship final against South Africa, which took place earlier this month. Australia skipper Pat Cummins revealed Smith has returned to batting practice in New York as he aims to push his case by proving his fitness for the second fixture in Grenada, scheduled to begin on June 3. "He's had a few hits over in New York, which I think was with a tennis ball and an incredi-ball. I think his wound is looking good, so the next stage is to come over here and hit some balls in the nets. "So we'll know more over the next few days," Cummins said as quoted from On Kensington Oval's strip that played all sorts of tricks on the batters, the Baggy Greens missed Smith's experience after tottering at 22/3 in the first innings and 65/4 in the second. With Marnus Labuschagne axed from the squad, it was the first time Australia lined up without the duo since 2018. Labuschagne, a victim of poor form, was replaced by young opener Sam Konstas. The 19-year-old swashbuckler returned with scores of three and five in his third Test appearance before being dismissed by Shamar Joseph in both innings. Meanwhile, Josh Inglis, who was slotted in the number four spot, registered five and 12. Cameron Green, who made his second appearance in the number three spot, was unimpressive yet again. While batting at first drop, Green was caught at slip in both innings for three and 15. Despite a no-show from Australian youngsters, Cummins confirmed that they would continue to back the youngsters and said, "You saw today how tricky a wicket that was, there weren't too many 50-run partnerships throughout the whole game. Of course, the top order would like to score some more runs. The challenge of Test cricket, especially for young players, is that when you get thrown different conditions, you've got to find a way to be effective." "That's the challenge for our young batting group - if you presented that same wicket next week, would you do anything differently? Would you not? That will be the conversation over the next few days. But we back them in, and their prep leading in was excellent, and the way they're talking about playing is really good, so we've got full confidence," he added. (ANI)

Neeraj Chopra reclaims world number 1 rank in javelin throw, Arshad Nadeem placed fourth
Nine months after he'd relinquished the spot, Neeraj Chopra reclaimed the world number 1 rank in men's javelin throw, according to the latest World Athletics ranking update. The reigning world champion climbed to the top of the ladder with 1445 ranking points, ahead of Grenada's Anderson Peters, who is second with 1431 points. Neeraj's world number 1 ranking comes days before the first-ever NC Classic on July 5, a tournament he has envisaged to popularise the sport in India by bringing down top throwers for a one-day competition. Germany's Julian Weber, who holds the world-leading throw of 2025 with a 91.06m effort at the Doha Diamond League, is third in the rankings while Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan is fourth in the world rankings with 1370 points to his name. Czechia's Jakub Vadlejch, the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist, completes the top five. Neeraj had lost the top spot to Peters in September 2024, a month after the Paris Olympics where he'd won a silver medal to add to his gold medal from the Tokyo Olympics. Neeraj had complained of a nagging injury back then, which he said was impacting his performances. In 2025, however, he returned 'completely fit' and has been consistently good in all competitions so far. Neeraj began the year with a win at the Potch Invitational in Potchefstroom, South Africa, in April and followed it up with a second-place finish at the Doha Diamond League in May, where he recorded a new national record of 90.23m. Crucially, however, he entered the coveted 90m club. He came second again at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland later that month but returned to winning ways at the Paris Diamond League in June with an 88.16m effort. Neeraj also added the Ostrava Golden Spike title to his name earlier this week. At all those events, Neeraj finished ahead of Peters. However, he is yet to face off against Nadeem this year. That showdown is likely to take place at the World Championships in September.
