
How rewarding is a degree in medicine?
Secondary school students who have their hearts set on studying medicine have to perform exceptionally well in the Leaving Cert, as well as score highly in the Health Professions Admission Test (Hpat) – requiring about 730 points in total to earn a place.
To that end, you might assume that by the time a 17- or 18-year-old makes it to medicine at third level, they are well prepared for the exhausting workload and academic demands of their course. Colin Doherty, head of the School of Medicine at Trinity College Dublin, explains that there are plenty of new challenges to negotiate, but that no course is rewarding in quite the same way as medicine.
New students, he says, tend to see themselves as future practitioners delivering care. While that is a positive pursuit, the school hammers home the idea of doctors as scientists as well – custodians of medicine who will be responsible for producing new therapies and treatments down the line, and for bringing about fairer and more effective medical systems.
'I believe there's a culture of application for the students that get those 625 points,' Dr Doherty says. 'They are students that have applied themselves, but have they done anything really creative with their intelligence? Probably not yet. When we bring them in, we say look – all that rote learning, there is a bit of that here but we're trying steadily to chip away at it and do away with it. We want people who can think.

'When I was walking around the wards in the '90s, I had to remember stuff. I couldn't look it up. I had to remember the dose of the drug or whether it was given intravenously or orally. I didn't have a reference … Nowadays, you can just look this up. So, we tell them, knowledge is no longer the issue. The question of how you access knowledge and deploy it, where you find it and how trustworthy it is – these are the important things now.'
Medical students of today have different concerns about the world than those Dr Doherty and his classmates faced in the 1980s. He references climate sustainability, artificial intelligence and political instability as particularly relevant megatrends, and argues that medicine empowers graduates to tackle these broad, contemporary problems in ways other degrees cannot.
'You can become a doctor and treat patients in any environment you like,' Dr Doherty says. 'You can go to Africa and deliver care to thousands of people in vaccination clinics. Or you can come in and work in an academic medical centre where you're the only person in the world who can remove this type of tumour from the brainstem. That's what's brilliant about medicine – you can go any direction you want.'
Medicine is often described as a calling. The pressure of the job and the high standards it demands are reason to imagine you would need to be extremely passionate about the work to pursue it. It is not always essential for a doctor to feel that draw, and it can be necessary to approach medicine as a job with its own demands and expectations.
Dr Doherty believes, though, that there are fewer students entering the field based on traditional notions of societal prestige. Ultimately, it is appropriate to view the role as something loftier and more important, given its extraordinary capacity for good.
'You can have a good doctor either way and you can have a bad doctor either way,' he says. 'I would say nowadays, because of the availability of other roles in society in business, you can get that social cachet in a whole range of roles. In remuneration terms, being a doctor is not the pathway to being one of the richest people in society any more. You're certainly well paid and in the upper echelons, but there's a certain point at which it cuts off, whereas in business, you can obviously become very wealthy.
'I would say there's more of a move towards the calling side of medicine now. I may be wrong, but looking around at our students, most of them come in and they have a very clear vision that they want to be a doctor. They want to practise medicine. They want to deliver care.'

The Sunday Independent's View: The Leaving Cert is the least of young people's worries
It may be worth asking whether having the eyes of the whole country fixed on them as they go through that rite of passage only adds to the pressure under which students are labouring right now. Worth asking even more is whether we would be better off as a society if half as much attention was paid to young people's struggles with mental health all year round as opposed to the Leaving Cert for those few weeks each June. A survey of young people published last week by the Irish Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) team at University College Galway made for predictably grim reading. It reported that almost 50pc of Irish children and teenagers between the ages of 10 and 17 report 'feeling low' at least once a week — a figure that has more than doubled since 1998. The outlook for girls is particularly concerning, with 57.6pc disclosing being regularly unhappy, compared to 35.2pc of boys. Data from HBSC teams around Europe tells the same story. Worryingly, nearly one in four of the young people surveyed suffer from headaches. Just under one in two experience sleep disturbances. That latter figure may have much to do with excessive screen time. The devices to which we all seem to be addicted, adults and children alike, devour our waking hours. By feeding us an unending diet of anger and negativity, they contribute to a vicious cycle of worsening mental health. The irony is that the main concern in previous decades used to centre on teenage drinking and drug abuse The younger a person gets a smartphone, the more likely they are to suffer from depression later on. The more they use them, the worse their mental health. From the climate crisis to the horrors of the war in Gaza, their minds are bombarded 24/7 with reasons to feel anxious. Not knowing if they will ever be able to afford to rent or buy their own home or earn enough to keep pace with the rising cost of living adds to that unease. The irony is that the main concern in previous decades used to centre on teenage drinking and drug abuse. As the HBSC report confirms, young people are now less likely than every previous generation to report being 'really drunk' at some point, down sharply from 33pc in 1998 to 17.8pc now. Chemical highs have merely been replaced by mental and emotional lows in a world that increasingly feels as if it is falling apart. Teenagers can be forgiven for thinking that the Leaving Cert is the least of their problems. Older generations used to envy the young. No more. Until their angst is properly recognised as a public crisis, the most vulnerable among them will continue to be left to struggle alone What can be done to ease this malaise is the real issue. Addressing the launch of the HBSC report via a pre-recorded video message last week, Fianna Fáil's Junior Public Health Minister Jennifer Murnane O'Connor acknowledged the pressures undermining children's well-being, and declared: 'We need to support equality and ensure that no young person is left behind.' ADVERTISEMENT Few would disagree with that fine, if slightly glib, sentiment. Making it happen is harder. As with housing, the mental challenges being experienced by young people need to be the focus of a resolute cross-departmental approach, encompassing every arm of government. Until their angst is properly recognised as a public crisis, the most vulnerable among them will continue to be left to struggle alone, long after the annual messages of solidarity as they sit the Leaving Cert have been forgotten.

Leaving Cert student diary: ‘I'm proof there's an alternative to incredibly stressful exams'
I'm only young, so it's fair to say I don't follow the ins and outs of education policy. But I do hear, from my friends and on the news, about how incredibly stressful the Leaving Cert is and how it needs to be reformed. I and the other 4,512 students sitting the Leaving Cert Applied [LCA] are living proof that there is a different way. The LCA means students like me, who prefer practical and vocational approaches, are not left behind. I know Ireland is trailing other European countries in terms of offering this vocational option, although the numbers sitting the LCA are growing every year. The LCA offers entry routes to college too. I am hoping to get into a post-Leaving Cert course: nursing studies at Moate ETB [education and training board]. It gives us a foundation in nursing, includes practical experience and a work placement, and is also linked to a general nursing course at TUS [Technological University of the Shannon]. I'm not doing it as an examined subject, but I felt that it would be a really useful skill for a nurse to have, as it means I can communicate with more people. I'm not fluent, but I can hold a basic conversation and I hope to improve. As for the exams? It's a case of so far, so good. I appreciated the layout of the papers and they haven't been as difficult as I expected. English and communications was probably my best so far, as a lot of the topics I studied appeared. Hotel catering and tourism, however, was probably the most challenging, although still achievable. In this subject, we learn about restaurants, tourist sites and we work on menus for parties and for people with food allergies and intolerances, such as coeliac disease. LCA students have already done a lot of projects and continuous assessment throughout the year, so that relieves the pressure of a single, high-stakes exam. I'll miss my classmates in school. There's only been eight of us in the entire LCA programme, so we became tight-knit. I currently commute for over an hour every day to and from school. This is because we moved a few years ago but I wanted to stay in the same school. I wish there was better public transport, particularly for rural areas, as there's currently only two buses a day. Carl O'Brien: ‘Students buoyed by positive to start to State exams 2025'
So, it's day two and done. For many students, the first 48 hours of the Junior Cycle and Leaving Cert exams have been nerve-racking, energy-sapping and emotionally draining. Yet, candidates have also been getting into their stride, honing their exam technique and learning to pace themselves. The generally positive reaction to Leaving Cert English papers one and paper two has certainly helped, buoyed by the much-predicted appearance of Eavan Boland. It's fair to say that none of the expert we spoke to recommended it. Friday, at least, gives students a chance to relax, breathe out and take stock. As Brian Mooney says in his advice for parents, some young people taking the Leaving Cert can mistakenly believe their standing in their parents' eyes is dependent on their success in the exam. 'Ensure your son or daughter is clear that your love for them is in no way dependent on how they perform,' he says. 'This affirmation is one of the greatest gifts you can give them during the exams.'
