NZ U85kg side complete historic clean sweep

The NZ U85kg side have achieved a historic clean sweep of their two-match tour to Sri Lanka, beating the hosts 32-6 in Colombo.
The match was played in front of an estimated 25,000 spectators at the Racecourse Stadium, the second big crowd in a week to watch the first New Zealand representative rugby side to visit the country in 70 years.
After last weekend's
50-10 win
for the NZ U85s in Kandy, the Sri Lankan Tuskers were expected to field a more experienced line up for the return match. Several players who took the field against Malaysia a fortnight ago were rested, something vice-captain Josh Gellert said they'd factored into their preparation.

"We've identified the changes in their team," said the openside flanker. "A big thing for us is being connected throughout the group, making sure everyone's confident.
"A big thing for us is proving to the guy next to you why you got picked, so I think that message will be to keep that defensive structure pretty firm."
The game was tight through the opening 10 minutes, but the NZ U85s broke things open with some clever kicking. Outstanding fullback Francis Morrison collected a chip from wing Pieter Swarts, and flicked the ball on for captain and first five Jarred Percival to score.
Swarts was in the action again not long after, linking with Ben Megson to send Percival over for his second. The Tuskers hit back with a penalty goal to Nigel Ratwatte, but Swarts got in on the scoring action himself, with a well taken try in the corner.
Percival converted from wide out to make the score 17-3 at the break.
The Tuskers had their best period of the game early in the second half, with Ratwatte slotting another penalty, but that was the last time they'd trouble the scoreboard. Gellert was too strong close to the line and powered over, followed by another perfectly weighted kick that set up Morrison to score the final try of the game.

"We scored some awesome tries, played brilliantly and opened them up in the second half. The fans were amazing, they cheered for us… it's an atmosphere we've never experienced back home."
Once again, the U85s had to contend with 30-degree heat, despite the game kicking off at 6pm local time. Several players, including Percival, were forced from the field with heat exhaustion.
"I think I was in the ice bath for about 15 minutes, before I could even go join the boys on the sideline again. I don't think it portrays on TV just how tough the conditions are - it was seriously hot."

The team now return to the New Zealand club season, after their fortnight of being superstars in Sri Lanka. This week, they have been engaged in some official functions involving the NZ High Commission and travelling patron Sir Graham Henry, as well as visiting a local biscuit firm that's sponsoring the tour.
Gellert, who usually spends his weekends playing for the Auckland University Slug Collectors club side in front of crowds of mostly partners and friends, said it was an incredible experience.

"People are coming up to us on the streets, asking for photos and autographs," he said. "It's something that will probably never feel normal for this group of boys.
"We were warned about how much Sri Lanka love rugby, but I don't think anything could have prepared for what it's truly like. As soon as we got off the plane, we were getting interviewed, but we love it.
"We're the club battlers, so we're stoked at having the limelight."

Defending the title at home, the Fijians took a 30-0 lead at halftime. Fiji's head coach, Ioan Cunningham, expressed pride in his team's performance, particularly under the challenging ground conditions at Lawaqa Park. He also praised the impact of the five debutants. Tonga will meet Samoa on Tuesday in the second game of the tournament. Meanwhile, in the Oceania Under-20 Rugby Challenge, the Fiji under-20s team retained their title for another year when they swept through the event undefeated. Fiji will host Samoa and Australia in a tri-nation international boxing event at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva at the end of June. FBC reports the Fiji Amateur Boxing head coach Cam Todd confirmed a team of 30 boxers from Australia and a 10-member squad from Samoa will be competing. The event will feature boxers in the 12 to 19-year-old bracket, in both the male and female categories. Todd said the Australian team features several state champions and elite-level fighters. Team Samoa are currently seeking more funding to make their trip possible. Independent Boxing Samoa Incorporated president Tavui Mike Lemisio said while they have received assistance from the Samoa Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it's not enough. The Samoa Observer reported the team needs the funding to pay off their airfares, accommodation and other expenses. Former New Zealand sevens and Hurricanes player Salesi Rayasi has been named in the Flying Fijians extended squad for upcoming international matches in July. Rayasi, who played 50 games for the Hurricanes in Super Rugby, signed a two-year deal with French club Vannes last year. Fijians' head coach Mick Byrne has named him in the squad to prepare for matches against the Wallabies and Scotland. The squad includes Hawke's Bay scrum half Sam Wye, some players from the Fijian Drua team and a number of players playing in Europe. The draw has been made for the FIFA under-20 World Cup which includes Oceania qualifiers New Zealand and New Caledonia. The Fiji national women's football team scored a 3-1 win over Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby in the team's final international friendly. FBC reported PNG drew first blood through Marie Kaipu, who gave the home side an early lead. But Fijian striker Cema Nasau scored a hat-trick to give her team the win. Both sides now shift their focus to the 2025 OFC Women's Nations Cup, which will be held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Former All Blacks captain Stu Wilson dies at age 70

The die is now cast for anyone in that category from the Hurricanes, as they were knocked out of the play-offs, but still there was enough in this weekend to give Scott Robertson a bit to ponder before we head to Taranaki to learn who will be taking on France in three tests in July. Bell had completely dropped off the radar due to injury and the very good form of Ioane Moananu in his place at the Crusaders. However, while Scott is obviously starting as captain, there is a slight question mark over what role Jordie and Beauden will initially play in the match day squad. On the evidence of his performance against the Chiefs, it will be a very tough call to leave Beauden out of the starting 10 jersey, given that his tactical kicking in a test-match intensity was the difference between the Blues' advancing to the semi-finals or having their season end then and there. Every set piece in the Blues' victory over the Chiefs was crucial, as it gave the opportunity to garner penalties that Barrett either kicked for goal or converted into large territorial gains. At 24, Fusitu'a has a long career ahead of him, however a call up now would give him ample time to work his way up the propping rotation at a managed pace. Ruben Love. Even though he moved back to fullback to accommodate the returning Brett Cameron, Love was still entrusted with the goal kicking, which he's handled superbly. The All Blacks are blessed with a number of test match quality kickers, but this particular skillset is one that gives Love just that much more of an advantage as a utility player. Daniel Rona. Most of the chat has been around a recall for his midfield partner Quinn Tupaea, but Rona's performance in a losing effort against the Blues was the Chiefs' best. There is a lot of traffic jostling to get into the midfield selections, so this may be more of being added to the official depth chart rather than a direct selection in June.
