‘Eat right to reduce microplastic toxicity'

PETALING JAYA: Purple sweet potato, black glutinous rice (pulut hitam), black seeds, roselle and red dragon fruit – put more of these on the table.
Health experts say these types of food help fight the inflammatory and toxic effects of microplastics in the body, with reports highlighting that Malaysians are the world's top consumers of small plastic particles, ingesting an average of 502.3mg of it daily.
Toxicologist Prof Dr Mustafa Ali Mohd said while completely avoiding microplastics would be unrealistic, eating more of specific foods offered a practical and science-backed approach to reducing their risks.
'Microplastics are everywhere and we're consuming them. They potentially affect our liver, nerves and cause mild inflammation,' said Dr Mustafa of the Global Institute for Leadership and Management, Singapore.
'To help reduce inflammation, we need to consistently consume antioxidants.
'The best source for antioxidants are black seed (habbatus sauda) and monk fruit (luo han guo).
'Black seed contains thymoquinone – a very important anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compound,' the dean of the institute's Medicine and Wellness programme said in an interview.
According to a study published last year in the Environmental Science and Technology journal, Malaysia was tops among 109 countries in the consumption of microplastics, which are plastic particles less than 5mm in size.
Nutritionist Dr Nurul Husna Shafie said another natural antioxidant, anthocyanins, has been shown to reduce toxicity caused by microplastics, by alleviating oxidative stress and inflammation in reproductive tissues.
'They may also help improve gut health by reducing microplastic-induced gut dysbiosis and inflammation,' said the official from the Department of Nutrition, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Universiti Putra Malaysia.
Dr Nurul Husna said meta-analyses indicated that dietary anthocyanins could reduce oxidative stress biomarkers and enhance the body's antioxidant capacity.
'Specifically, anthocyanins reduce stress biomarkers such as malondialdehyde (MDA), oxidised LDL (Ox-LDL) and isoprostanes.
'They also boost antioxidant defences by increasing total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and the activity of key enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx),' she said.
She said anthocyanins were pigments responsible for the red, purple and blue colours in fruits, vegetables and grains.
'In Malaysia, common anthocyanin-rich food includes purple sweet potato, black glutinous rice, roselle, red pitaya (dragon fruit), butterfly/blue pea flower (bunga telang), eggplant and red cabbage,' she said.
She added that they could be easily incorporated into one's daily diet.
'Purple sweet potatoes can be steamed or boiled for breakfast, used in traditional kuih, made into chips for snacks or served as healthy desserts.
'Traditional Malaysian food such as ulam and fermented items like tempeh and tapai are often rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals, which support the body's detoxification processes,' she said, suggesting fresh food over processed ones and using water filters.
Dr Mustafa said that while including antioxidant-rich food in one's daily diet was an effective way to reduce the effects of microplastics in the body, it was equally important for people to minimise their overall exposure to these toxins.
'Do not dispose of or burn plastics carelessly, as it can break down and release particles into the air which we then inhale.
'Avoid storing food in plastic containers, especially when it comes to hot, oily or highly acidic food, even if these containers are labelled as food-grade.
'There is a high likelihood that microplastics can leach into food, as certain conditions can cause the plastic to break down and mix with what we consume,' he said.
Sahabat Alam Malaysia honorary secretary Mageswari Sangaralingam advised consumers to reduce the use of plastic containers.
'We need to break free from plastics. Replace plastic containers and products with safer, durable materials.
'Bring your own non-plastic, reusable containers when buying takeaway food. Replace plastic baby bottles with glass bottles.
'Babies and infants are particularly vulnerable to health risks associated with microplastic exposure,' she said.

PETALING JAYA: Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah praised the quality and expertise of doctors at the National Heart Institute (IJN) after receiving treatment there. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed this during the Higher Education Ministry's Ilmuan Malaysia Madani forum titled "Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality and Sustainability of Public Transport." "His Majesty told me that, as someone with exposure to and experience with some of the world's best medical centres, he was very satisfied with the quality of service, excellence, and expertise of our doctors at IJN," he said. Anwar added that while the government welcomes criticism, Malaysians should also recognise national achievements, especially in healthcare. "So while we allow criticism, which is not a problem, we must also recognise the strengths we have, and there must be the drive to push ourselves to do better," he said. The Sultan of Brunei was in Kuala Lumpur for the 46th Asean Summit with other regional leaders. On May 27, he was reportedly feeling fatigued and was advised by health experts to rest at IJN. Anwar also spoke about his conversation with President of Guinea-Bissau General Umaro Sissoco Embaló, during which he asked why Malaysia was chosen despite limited bilateral trade. "His answer was that he follows developments here and sees Malaysia as a country on the rise, with significant potential. That's why he chose to come," he said. Embaló arrived today for a three-day visit—his first since taking office as president in February 2020. Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in November 1974. In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Guinea-Bissau reached RM4.1 million, with Malaysian exports amounting to RM4.04 million and imports standing at RM0.06 million.

A common problem in pregnancy is anaemia. This happens when you have less red blood cells (haemoglobin) in your body. This gives you a pale appearance compared with most pregnant women. Normally, pregnant women are flushed at the cheeks or radiant in appearance and look pink. This is due to the hormonal changes in pregnancy that cause some dilation of the small blood vessels in the cheek. For most of them, their blood volume increases from five litres to 7.5 litres throughout their pregnancy. However, the red blood cell component does not increase as much as the fluid component. This results in a dilutional effect, which is called dilutional anaemia and is considered normal. In Malaysia, we have different racial groups with diverse cuisines and appetites. Unfortunately, we consume too much processed or overcooked food. These have very little nutritional value resulting in many Malaysians having anaemia secondary to lack of iron, folic acid or vitamin B12. It is therefore recommended to change the dietary habit to increase fresh vegetables, fruits and iron-rich food in the diet. Green leafy vegetables that are not cooked in a salad is an easy option to increase the amount of folic acid and vitamin B12 in the dietary intake. Good examples of these vegetables include spinach and kale. Legumes and fruits such as oranges and avocados are also rich in folate. Meat especially red meat is high in iron content that allows women to increase their iron load. Chicken liver and gizzard are cheap options of dietary iron. The other options of food high in iron includes shellfish, molasses, legumes and green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale. The first advise to overcome anaemia is to change the dietary habits to incorporate the above dietary changes. The next step is vitamin supplementation. Both government and private healthcare services often prescribe supplements to help mothers maintain their haemoglobin level above 11 gm. There are many choices of supplementation available – so, look at the content of each supplement brand and choose the one that provides adequate levels of iron, folate and vitamin B12. These steps usually resolve most cases of anaemia. In some cases, a handful of pregnant mothers may be iron deficient due to poor diet or absorption problems. They will require iron through intravenous iron therapy, as a daycare procedure. Cheap iron therapy has a higher allergic and complication rate. The newer versions are much safer, but more expensive. Besides dietary causes of anaemia, a smaller number of women have blood disorders. The most common form is thalassemia. Other forms of blood disorders include spherocytosis, ovalocytosis and other haemoglobinopathies. Meaning, they cannot produce proper red blood cells that last 120 days compared with normal people and breakdown faster resulting in anaemia. The one thing that most people try to avoid is blood transfusion. This is because there are many complications related to blood transfusions. However, in certain cases such as thalassemia, blood transfusions may be inevitable for the safety of the pregnant mother and her baby. But, the amount and frequency of the blood transfusion will depend on your doctor's advice. They will customise your treatment to ensure you have a safe and healthy pregnancy.
