Williamson praises 'elite' Babar
New Zealand's former captain, Kane Williamson, recently spoke highly of Pakistan's star batter Babar Azam, calling him one of the best players in the world. After his blazing century in a recent match, Williamson praised Azam's class, placing him in the league of the world's top cricketers.
"Babar Azam is certainly a part of the 'Fab Four' or 'Fab Five,' which consists of some of the finest players in the game. He is a world-class batter who consistently delivers for his team," said Williamson.
Williamson also shared his positive experience of touring Pakistan, mentioning the warm hospitality he received and the passionate crowd in Lahore. He expressed his joy at being part of such an exciting series.
The Kiwi batsman then shifted focus to his team's performance in the ongoing tri-nation series. He noted that New Zealand had played well as a unit, handling pressure effectively.
"Our team worked hard, and as a result, we got good outcomes. Devon Conway played brilliantly, and South Africa's team was equally competitive," he said.
Speaking about the match conditions, Williamson commented on how batting became easier as the day went on.
"As the evening progressed, batting became easier, and we adapted well to the changing conditions," he explained.
Williamson also provided an update on the health of Rachin Ravindra, who had taken a blow to the head while fielding in the opening match against Pakistan.
"Rachin is recovering well and is in good health, but I'm not sure if he will play in the final," Williamson added.
Williamson was in fine form in the second match, scoring an unbeaten 133 runs against South Africa. His century, which included 13 fours and two sixes, led New Zealand to a comfortable win, chasing down a target of 305 runs with eight balls remaining. This was also Williamson's first ODI hundred since the 2019 World Cup, where he scored 148 runs against the West Indies in Manchester.
New Zealand's partnership between Devon Conway and Williamson was key to the win, with the duo putting together a solid 187-run stand.
Final showdown
New Zealand batter Devon Conway believes the upcoming match between Pakistan and South Africa will be very exciting, as everyone will support Pakistan due to their status as the host team.
Speaking in the mixed media zone after securing a spot in the Tri-Nation Series final, Conway said, "Pakistan is a very good team, and I think we will face Pakistan in the final of the Tri-Nation Series."
He added, "All the players in our team are in good form, and it feels great when you're performing well."
Conway explained their strategy, saying, "We planned to play slowly in the beginning to save the wicket, then build good partnerships in the middle to make things easier. There was no need to take any big risks."
Regarding his teammate Kane Williamson, Conway stated, "I've seen some great innings from Kane Williamson, but this one was really special. Kane has a class of his own when it comes to batting, and it was a great experience to bat with him at the other end."
Conway also shared his feelings about missing out his century, saying, "I'm not disappointed about not completing my century. I believe winning the match is more important."
The left-handed batter, who played a fantastic knock of 97 runs against South Africa in the Tri-Nation Series, mentioned, "With all top-order players in good form, selectors must find it challenging to form the playing XI, and it will be a tough situation for the selectors moving forward."
The third match of the Tri-Nation Series will be played between Pakistan and South Africa, with the winner of the match facing New Zealand in the final on February 14 at National Bank Stadium, Karachi.

Germany building something special, says Nagelsmann after defeat by France
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said his side are still trying to close the gap on the top teams in the world after their 2-0 Nations League defeat by France on Sunday but he was confident they are building something special. Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise earned France the victory and third place in the Nations League. Nagelsmann saw improvement in his side from their 2-1 semi-final defeat by Portugal on Wednesday. 'If we perform like we did today and don't take a step back against the teams in the World Cup qualifiers, then hopefully, we'll march through and prepare well,' he told reporters. 'Of course, we're still a few percentage points behind where we want to be, and behind the top teams in the world. We can't tear down the world in a year or two and make up for everything that may not have gone 100% right over several years. Spurs women coach Vilahamn sacked after poor season 'Nevertheless, I sense something in the whole group, both the players and the staff, something special. There's a special touch and a lot of potential still in waiting.' Germany, who last won the World Cup in 2014 and have been eliminated in the group stage in the past two editions, are in Group A of Europe's qualifiers for the 2026 tournament in North America. They begin their campaign in September against Slovakia in Bratislava.

Tuchel unhappy with England attitude after Andorra toil
BARCELONA: England coach Thomas Tuchel criticised his team after they struggled to a 1-0 victory away to Andorra in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday. The German has won his first three matches in charge with no goals conceded but had it not been for Harry Kane's 50th-minute goal his team would have faced humiliation against a side ranked 173rd in the world. After collecting the three points that put England in command of Group K, Tuchel made no attempt to sugar coat a performance that was way below par. 'We can just admit it that it's not what we expect from us. We need to look at it in detail and do better on Tuesday,' the German told ITV Sport. 'We lost all momentum after the first 25 minutes and lacked the quality and the energy. I was most worried in the last 20 minutes, I did not like the attitude that we ended the game with. I didn't like the lack of urgency. It is still a World Cup qualifier away from home.' England had 83% of the possession against a nation they had scored 25 goals against without reply in six previous meetings, but suffered from a chronic lack of imagination. Asked if his message before the game had not got through to his players, Tuchel added: 'The message got across because we had a good 25 minutes but then the energy and the determination weren't there anymore.' It was a refreshingly honest take from the former Paris St Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager whose contract with England only runs to the date of next year's World Cup final. He did have kind words, however, for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke whose display was about the only bright point for England. 'He was over the course of the match, the most dangerous. I could feel his hunger to do what was the plan throughout the whole of the match,' Tuchel said. Ballon d'Or 'should go to Champions League winner', says Ronaldo Captain Kane, whose goal was the 450th of his career for club and country, also praised Madueke. 'I think he was a constant threat today and got the assist for the goal, but we need more of that,' Kane said. 'We have amazing players and we need players who are not afraid to take players on and if they lose it, do it again.' England host Senegal in a friendly in Nottingham on Tuesday.

Brazil held in Ancelotti debut
Carlo Ancelotti's debut as coach of Brazil ended in a goalless draw in Ecuador in South American World Cup qualifying on Thursday. The 65-year-old Italian, who left Real Madrid at the end of the European season, has been charged with taking Brazil through the latter stages of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. The former AC Milan and Chelsea manager replaced Dorival Junior, who was sacked at the end of March after the 4-1 thrashing at the hands of reigning champions and bitter rivals Argentina. Thursday's result leaves the Selecao in fourth place in the qualifying table on 22 points while Ecuador, the surprise package in the campaign, remain in second place on 24 points. Argentina, who face Chile later on Thursday, lead the standings on 32 points and are the only team to have officially secured their place in the tournament which will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Paraguay, who enjoyed a 2-0 win over Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay, sit in third place, level on points with Ecuador. Ecuador knew a win would put them on the brink of qualification and there was a packed crowd at the Estadio Monumental in Guayaquil. But the home side were dealt a blow just before kick-off when goalkeeper Hernan Galindez suffered a muscle strain in the warm-up and replacement Gonzalo Valle was hurriedly sent out to make his debut. If Valle had any nerves they eased when he did well to parry a shot from inside the box from Vinicius Jr. who had been set up by Gerson following a turnover. Chances were limited in a contest where neither side was able to get control of midfield. The pattern continued after the break with Ecuador, missing their injured striker and talisman Enner Valencia, struggling to pose a threat. Real Madrid star Vinicius was quiet for much of the game and with Rodrygo absent, Brazil also lacked potency in attack. The best opening came in the 75th minute when Vinicius broke down the left and cut back to Casemiro.
