'Hero' 9-Year-Old Girl Killed While Trying to Get Younger Siblings to Safety Amid Gunfire
Lee'Lani Brooks, 9, was shot while rushing her siblings to safety in New Orleans
A stray bullet struck her in the head after gunfire erupted outside her home
She was declared brain dead and taken off life support days laterLouisiana authorities say a 9-year-old girl was shot and killed while rushing her younger siblings to safety as gunfire erupted near her house on May 12.
Lee'Lani Brooks, 9, was playing outside her home in New Orleans just before 2 p.m. when men nearby began shooting at each other, NOLA, WWL-TV and Fox 8 reported, citing police.
Lee'Lani and her mother ran inside their home, but a stray bullet traveled through a window and hit Lee'Lani in the head as she ran to get her younger siblings to safety, the local outlets reported, citing authorities.
She was then rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was placed on life support and declared brain dead, NOLA reported. On May 16, her family made the decision to take her off life support and she died soon after.
New Orleans Police arrested 19-year-old Evan Rogers, who as of May 13 faced one count of attempted second-degree murder and one count of illegal use of weapons, the New Orleans Police Department said in a statement on that date.
It took a four-hour stand-off for U.S. Marshals to apprehend Rogers while he was allegedly hiding out in a hotel, New Orleans police said in the statement. Police have also arrested a second person but did not release that person's name or what charges they face.
Lee'Lani's family members have set up a GoFundMe to cover her funeral costs.
'My baby Lee'lani was a sweet, vibrant, and fun 9-year-old child who loved and was loved by everyone around her,' Lee'Lani's mother, Letisha Johnson wrote in the post. 'She was a leader and ensured all her younger family members were protected. Her smile is unforgettable, and her personality was infectious.'
On May 20, Lee'Lani's family held a balloon release for the 9-year-old. Johnson was devastated about her daughter's death and told Fox 8 that their family was still processing their grief.'I just want everyone to remember my baby for who she was,' Johnson said, adding that Lee'Lani loved doing her makeup, doing her nails, dancing, and was admired by her family members and friends.
'That's what we want the world to remember her as, a hero, someone who was so selfless at 9 years old,' Mike Willis, a community activist, told the outlet.

A Cyclist's Throat Cut and Another's Head Sliced By Kite String on N.Y.C. Bridge
A man and a woman were cycling on the Marine Parkway Bridge in New York City on Sunday, June 1, when they were struck by a kite string The woman suffered injuries to her hands and head, but the man sustained serious injuries to his neck Though stable, he remains in the care of the Kings County Hospital's ICUTwo cyclists were injured by a kite string in New York City on Sunday, June 1, according to the New York Police Department. A 36-year-old woman, Jennifer Noble, and her friend, a 40-year-old man, were cycling northbound on the Marine Parkway Bridge around 5:20 p.m., when a kite string struck them. Noble told the Gothamist that they had spent a beach day at Jacob Riis Park in Queens, N.Y. But as they were riding home in the bicycle lane, Noble and her friend rode into the string. ' I caught it with my hand. I tried to prevent it from moving, but it cut through my fingers and then my forehead and then hit me on the helmet, and I went backwards and it went over me and hit him,' she told the outlet. Moments before the incident, Noble noticed a kite flying erratically near the bridge. However, its string was nearly invisible to track its path, until it was too late, she said. ' I'm a birder, so I'm always looking at the sky and I'd noticed this very, interesting-looking black-and-white kite in the sky as we were coming up the bike path,' she said. 'That was my first thought when I ran into the skirt string — I could feel the tension of the wind on it. I just knew it was a kite string.' Upon colliding with the string, the pair was tended to by their group of friends and other cyclists, who also called first responders. Noble sustained injuries to her head and hands, while the man she was with sustained serious injuries to his neck. EMS transported both victims to NYC Health and Hospitals/Coney Island. Noble was discharged that night. The man is currently recovering and in stable condition at Kings County Hospital's intensive care unit, according to a GoFundMe page created to help him with his unforeseen medical expenses. According to the fundraiser, the man, who was not identified by police, had his throat "slit" when he struck the line. "He suffered profound blood loss and damage to his windpipe, and has a very long road ahead of him in terms of recovery,' the fundraiser read. 'He will be in the ICU for an unknown amount of time at this point, though is stable and getting better by the day.' Noble said she didn't witness what happened after the collision. However, she told the Gothamist that the kite string looked similar to those used in kite fighting. A glass-coated string is typically used in the spar, where people aim to cut their opponent's kite string. ' If part of kite fighting is that one of the kites gets cut off and flies away, I don't see how there's a way to do that safely,' Noble said. 'It's such a danger, it just feels like a matter of time before someone else gets hurt in this way. So as a public safety concern, I would like to see that addressed.' 3 teens charged in police chase through multiple counties, crash
Three teenagers are under arrest Wednesday, charged with several crimes that police say ended after a chase through nine different police jurisdictions. Channel 2 brought the crash to you as breaking news Tuesday. Brookhaven police are crediting technology with those arrests, Channel 2's Richard Elliot reported. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The teens are suspects in a string of other crimes, too. Video from a Brookhaven police drone captured teenagers trying to steal a car near an apartment complex. Brookhaven got an alert from Doraville police. When officers moved in, the drone shows the three speeding away, starting a chase through nine different police jurisdictions. It caused at least one other crash before the suspects eventually crashed out at Peachtree Boulevard and I-285. Police arrested 17-year-old Octavio Luviano and two 15-year-olds. 'What I can tell you is that they have been, or they are suspects in many other crimes spanning several jurisdictions over the past three to four days,' said Police Chief Brandon Gurley. Other technology used included a series of license plate readers that tracked their movements in real time from Brookhaven to unincorporated DeKalb, from Atlanta to Gwinnett, and from Dunwoody to Sandy Springs. All the departments talked with each other the whole time. Gurley credits this network and the instant ability to share this information with other departments with these arrests. 'We do leverage technology,' he said. 'We're very fortunate here in how we utilize the technology to provide better public safety to our communities.' Gurley is worried about what he says is an uptick in these types of crimes and others involving teenagers. He would like to see laws changed to hold parents more legally accountable for the actions of their children. [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]

Jury convicts Wisconsin inmate accused of killing cellmate for being Black and gay
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin man doing time for trying to kill his mother was convicted Wednesday of strangling his cellmate to death. A jury found Jackson Vogel, 25, guilty of first-degree intentional homicide in connection with the death of 19-year-old Micah Laureano at the Green Bay Correctional Institution last year, WLUK-TV reported. Vogel told investigators he killed Laureano because Laureano was Black and gay. Vogel's attorneys, public defenders Ann Larson and Luke Harrison, didn't immediately return voicemail messages seeking comment. He faces a mandatory life sentence when he is sentenced on June 27. He is already serving a 20-year prison term handed down in 2018 for repeatedly stabbing his mother, strangling her and attempting to snap her neck, according to an appellate opinion upholding that conviction. A guard found Laureano's body hanging from the top bunk of the cell he shared with Vogel on Aug. 27, according to a criminal complaint. Laureano's hands and feet were tied together with orange material. Vogel, who is white, told the guard that he killed Laureano because Laureano was Black and gay, the complaint said. He said he knocked Laureano out, tied his hands and feet and strangled him. Investigators discovered numerous cut strips of orange cloth around the cell as well as a handwritten note that said, 'Kill all humans!' followed by profanities directed at Black people and gay people, according to the complaint. Laureano was serving a three-year sentence in battery and robbery cases. His mother, Phyllis Laureano, filed a federal lawsuit in February accusing prison officials of failing to protect him from Vogel. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. Green Bay Correctional Institution, a maximum security facility, opened in 1898. Republicans have been calling for years to close the prison along with the Waupun Correctional Institution, another maximum security facility where seven inmates have died since 2023. But concerns over job losses and the cost of building a new prison have stymied any progress on either front.
