Brazil announces auto industry executive as COP30 climate champion
April 2 (Reuters) - Brazil on Wednesday announced the nomination of auto industry executive Dan Ioschpe, who represented Brazil in business meetings at the G20 summit last year, as its "climate champion" for the 2025 United Nations climate summit, know as COP30, which the country will host in November.
His role will be to work on behalf of the conference's president, Brazilian diplomat Andre Correa do Lago, to encourage and negotiate voluntary efforts by the business community and others to curb global warming. Former climate champions have been environmental advocates, government officials and members of the development finance community.
"I look forward to working with him to advance the implementation of the Paris Agreement and deliver meaningful progress on the road to COP30," said Simon Stiell, the executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, in a statement about the appointment.
Ioschpe is the chairman of Iochpe-Maxion (MYPK3.SA), opens new tab, a Sao Paulo-based auto parts maker, and serves on the board of Brazilian firms such as planemaker Embraer (EMBR3.SA), opens new tab.
He also served as the chair of the B20, a global business forum that fosters dialogue between corporate and government leaders at the G20 group of major global economies, which Brazil presided last year.

Another said the operation could begin within days. A senior Western diplomat added: "It will be huge, vicious and unrelenting. "But the Ukrainians are brave people." On Friday, Russia unleashed a fierce missile and drone barrage on Kyiv, killing at least six and injuring over 80, but American officials say this may only be the beginning. Russia's Defense Ministry called it a response to "terrorist acts" by Ukraine - but insiders say the real retaliation is still being assembled behind the scenes. U.S. officials believe the SBU — Ukraine's security service — may be directly targeted in the revenge strike. Carnegie Endowment analyst Michael Kofman told Reuters: "Most likely, they will attempt to retaliate against (SBU) headquarters, or other regional intelligence administration buildings. "In general, Russia's ability to substantially escalate strikes from what they are already doing — and attempting to do over the past month — is quite constrained." Over 117 kamikaze drones were launched from hidden mobile units disguised as everyday cargo trucks, slipped undetected into Russian territory. New footage released on Saturday by Ukraine's SBU shows an FPV drone lifting off from a lorry rooftop before smashing directly into a Russian bomber at the Belaya airfield. The strikes hit four strategic bases - Belaya, Dyagilevo, Olenya, and Ivanovo — torching aircraft capable of launching nuclear warheads. Ukrainian officials say 41 planes were destroyed or damaged. U.S. intelligence puts the figure closer to 20, with at least 10 completely destroyed - still a staggering blow to Russia's long-range bomber fleet. I don't like it. "I said: 'Don't do it. You shouldn't do it. You should stop it.' "But, again, there's a lot of hatred." Meanwhile, Russia's propaganda machine is framing the war as existential. While officials say the major strike is still to come, Ukraine is already reeling from a brutal few days of missile and drone attacks. On Friday, 400 drones and 45 missiles rained down on cities across the country. In Kyiv, explosions lit up the night sky near the Mother Ukraine monument. A fire tore through the 11th floor of a residential block in Solomyanskyi, and emergency crews rushed to save civilians trapped inside. Overnight into Saturday, Kharkiv suffered Russia's largest airstrike yet, killing three - including a baby and a 14-year-old girl - and wounding 21. 'We have a lot of damage,' Kharkiv's mayor Ihor Terekhov said. At least 18 apartment buildings and 13 homes were hit, with more strikes reported in Donetsk, Dnipro, Ternopil, and Odesa. Reports from Ukrainian intelligence suggest up to 125,000 troops are massing near the Sumy and Kharkiv frontiers, with fears of a three-pronged summer assault to finally break the deadlock. The offensive is expected to focus on Kramatorsk, Kostiantynivka, and Pokrovsk in the Donbas - with plans to encircle key cities rather than slug it out street by street. Military analyst Konrad Muzyka told The Telegraph Russia's tactics have evolved: "We have seen the Russians shift to focused, small-unit attacks, often of just three to five men. The Blues have already been extremely busy since the end of last season. Brazilian winger Estevao Willian is set to make his move from Palmeiras official alongside Ecuadorian youngster Kendry Paez. Chelsea have also signed Liam Delap and Dário Essugo from Ipswich and Sporting Lisbon respectively over the past week. And those signings could potentially be joined by English wideman Gittens. As first reported by French outlet RMC Sport, the West London side have agreed on a seven-year deal with the 20-year-old to move to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have tabled a £29.5m bid - although it's believed they'll need to go higher - and hope to get a deal secured before the first part of the summer transfer window closes on Tuesday. Gittens, an England under-21 international, was actually at Chelsea as a youngster as well as a host of other clubs. He eventually found his way to Manchester City but quit the club in 2020 as he became the latest in a long line of promising English talents to move to the Bundesliga. He has since gone on to make over 100 appearances for Dortmund, scoring 17 goals - 12 of which came last season. Despite still having three years left to run on his deal, it appears he will now depart Dortmund if the two clubs can agree a fee. Gittens has a £50m release clause in his contract, but Chelsea are hoping to get it done for slightly less. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl admitted earlier this year that there was potentially interest in Gittens. He said: 'There's definitely a market for him. He's a very exciting player. We'll be having discussions soon. If offers come in, we'll have to deal with them.' 'We want to reduce wages,' Kehl added. 'That said, it's possible we'll continue with some of these players. But some may no longer be part of the BVB squad next season.' Gittens will arrive at Stamford Bridge as a possible replacement for Jadon Sancho, who has departed the club after Chelsea chiefs decided not to sign him permanently following his loan. The West Londoners have decided not to activate a £25m clause in the deal, and have consequently paid a £5m penalty. In a statement on social media, the winger said: "Grateful for the experience. Big love to everyone at Chelsea who made me feel at home — teammates, staff and the fans. Wishing the club all the best moving forward. Truly grateful, Thank you Blues."
