Cables laid, Ghaziabad set to get 3 new power substations
Ghaziabad: A total of three new 33 kV substations are set to come up in the district by Sept this year. The substations, being built at a cost of around Rs 6-7 crore each, are located in Noor Nagar, Karkar Model, and near the Hindon civil terminal area. Together, they will address the power issues of over 25,000 people in these areas."To improve power supply in the zone 3 area of the Ghaziabad power department, three new 33 kV substations will be built this year. These will provide relief to the people, along with improving the power supply. Land for the construction of these substations has been taken, and work has begun. They will be ready by September this year," Deepak Agarwal, chief engineer, zone 3, Ghaziabad power department, PVVNL, told TOI.Agarwal went on to clarify that the Hindon Airport Substation is not being built for the airport, but for the area around it.Noor Nagar is a locality in the Raj Nagar Extension (RNE) area of Ghaziabad. At present, electricity is being supplied from two substations in Raj Nagar Extension, but there is a need for a third substation to address issues of overloading and increasing power demand, as there's always a power crisis in the area during peak summers. The new substation set to come up in Noor Nagar is therefore planned to take the load of the existing two substations in the RNE area.."The power situation of RNE is expected to improve after the construction of the third substation. The work of laying power cables for about 5km for the substation is done," said an official of the power department.Raj Nagar Extension and its neighbouring areas are home to around 18,000 consumers.A 6km line is currently being laid from the Hindon Airport substation. Supply from the substation is set to benefit around 7,000 consumers in areas like Sikandpur, Garima Garden, and Pasunda. Previously, power supply to these areas was being supplied from substations in Lajpat Nagar and Rajendra Nagar, which faced perpetual problems of overloading, leading to frequent snags and transformer breakdowns.The substation in Karkar Model industrial area is expected to provide better supply to around 5,000 consumers in the nearby industrial and residential areas. This substation is expected to take the load off the Maharajpur 3 and Ambika substations."During peak summers, people have to face a power crisis when the demand increases. In such a situation, after the construction of new substations, the distribution network will strengthen in these areas, which will address issues of outages due to overloading and bring relief to the people," Aggarwal added.

Steep power bill increase comes as shock for Pkl residents
Residents of Panchkula have received electricity bills showing increase of 100% to 400% for the period from mid-April to mid-May, compared to the previous year, despite minimal changes in unit consumption. While the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission implemented a rate increase of 20 to 30 paise per kWh/kVAh for domestic and industrial categories, an analysis of various bills reveals disproportionate charges despite marginal increase in consumption. This has had a particularly adverse effect on middle-class families, the economically disadvantaged and pensioners. S K Nayar, Citizens' Welfare Association president from Sector 15, experienced a 145% increase in charges while maintaining similar consumption. His bill rose to Rs 2,042 for 210 units, compared to Rs 833 for 216 units in April 2024. "It is a loot of public money, and a wrong step was taken. Earlier, there used to be a minimum charge, and even if you went out of the city for a few months, the bill amount would not pinch you. But they are imposing fixed charges, which have burned a hole in the pockets of the common man," he rued. Sector 25 resident Mohit Gupta received a bill of Rs 5,641 for 668.25 units, while last April's bill was Rs 2,673 for 496.23 units. Despite lower consumption previously, this year's rate increase has resulted in substantially higher charges. Sant Singh Gill, former RWA president of Sector 25, saw his bill increase to Rs 3,745, as compared to Rs 1,286 last year, representing a 191% rise in charges against a 47% increase in consumption. Analysis shows varied impacts: Cases with abnormal consumption increases saw 430% higher bills, while 38% consumption increases resulted in 111% higher bills. Even with 21% reduced consumption, bills increased by 87%. Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVNL) chief engineer (Operations) Chandan Singh said, "The bills have been generated as per HERC's current rates. Some may have felt bills are higher because consumption has increased. As far as fixed charges are concerned, it is a certain amount for certain uses." The 2025-26 electricity order confirms rate increases of 20 to 30 paise per kWh/kVAh for both domestic and industrial categories in Haryana.

Garden Reach inks pact with Norway firm, India to build its first polar research vehicle
Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), a Government of India undertaking, signed an MoU with Norwegian firm Kongsberg on Tuesday to co-design and build India's first-ever polar research vehicle (PRV) indigenously. The MoU was signed in Oslo in the presence of Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, who termed it 'a commitment to fostering scientific discovery, advancing India's capabilities in polar and ocean research, and contributing to global efforts to address pressing challenges like climate change.' 'Let this MoU signing be a beacon of hope and progress, signalling India's unwavering commitment to scientific advancement and sustainable development. Together, we are building not just a vessel but a legacy — a legacy of innovation, exploration and international cooperation that will inspire generations to come,' Sonowal said. A PRV is a ship which serves as a platform for research in the polar regions (areas surrounding the North and South Poles). It can also help scientists undertake research in the ocean realm. India currently operates three research base stations in the polar regions — Bharati and Maitri in Antarctica, and Himadri in the Arctic region — and had been planning to have its own PRV for a while now. In 2023, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju informed the Rajya Sabha that the country would have its first PRV within five years at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,600 crore. According to the Ministry, the MoU marks an important milestone for India's shipbuilding sector as it will receive design expertise for developing the PRV 'while taking into account the requirement of National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, which will use it for research activities in the polar and southern ocean realms'. The PRV will be equipped with the latest scientific equipment, enabling researchers to explore the oceans' depths and study marine ecosystems, Sonowal said. It will be a testament to India's critical shipbuilding capabilities, boosting the Government's 'Make In India' initiative, he added. GRSE, which has built warships, survey and research vessels, will build the PRV in its yard in Kolkata. Meanwhile, Sonowal, who is on a five-day official visit to Norway and Denmark, also represented India in a ministerial meeting on the role of shipping in shaping the future. The meeting emphasised the need for the industry to seek out a stable, long-term, regulatory environment supporting inclusive and decarbonised ocean-based trade. Ministers from Brazil, Japan, UN, US, China and Norway also attended the meet. Underlining PM Narendra Modi's vision of SAGAR — Security and Growth for All in the Region — Sonowal said it 'leverages India's vast coastline, strategic location, and maritime heritage to drive economic prosperity, enhance regional security, and ensure sustainable development for all stakeholders'. 'This entails economic cooperation, capacity building, disaster management, information sharing and environmental stewardship. Upgrading from the SAGAR initiative, India's PM Narendra Modi ji announced MAHASAGAR — which is Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions, signalling further consolidation,' he added.
