BREAKING NEWS Huge change to the way Aussies watch football as Optus is DITCHED as English Premier League broadcaster: Here's where to watch it instead

Daily Mail12 hours ago

Channel Nine and its streaming service Stan have secured the right to air all English Premier League matches in Australia in what amounts to a seismic change for soccer fans down under.
The broadcaster reached an agreement to snatch the rights from Optus Sport in a move that was officially announced on Monday.
Under the terms of the deal, Nine and Stan will also be the sole way to watch FA Cup matches in Australia.
The three-year-deal effectively ends Optus's live sports programming and brings an end to the Optus Sport platform, which will close.
Nine has bought out the rest of the rights period from Optus, with Stan giving discounted pricing to Optus Sport customers so they can continue to watch the world's biggest football league.
The transition of the rights becomes official on August 1.
'The Premier League is the most-watched football league on the planet, and alongside the FA Cup, this acquisition reinforces Nine's position as the home of sport in Australia. We are proud to deliver these iconic competitions to Australian audiences through Stan Sport,' Nine CEO Matt Stanton said in a statement.

Adjusting to Premier League 'was more difficult' than anticipated

Wolves winger Rodrigo Gomes says adapting the Premier League was more "difficult" than he expected and that made his debut more campaign more challenging. The 21-year-old, who signed from Braga in June 2024, made 28 appearances in all competitions for Wolves last season."It was a tough and difficult season," said Gomes on the Wolves website, external. "But I think it was very good for me to improve myself."It was my first season away from Portugal and it was very nice. I did a very good pre-season, and although the team in the first games was not that good, from the middle of the season until the end, we improved a lot."We improved individually and as a team and I think that helped me to get better and improve myself and my game. In the end, I think it was a very good season for me and for the club too."I was thinking I was ready, but the Premier League was different than the pre-season. I knew it would be, but the Premier League was very intense, very physical, very fast, and although the pre-season was like that too, it was not as much as the Premier League was."It was different, it was tough, it was more difficult, and in the first games, I was not that ready."But I think it's normal when you come to the Premier League, especially as a young player and you are not a regular in the first games."You need to time to settle and you need time to know how to play in the team. I've said many times before, the Premier League is the best league in the world and it's the most difficult league in the world to play in, so I think now I'm better, but I still need to improve more and more."

Wrexham set to re-sign player who impressed Jurgen Klopp and made plea to Ryan Reynolds

Wrexham set to re-sign player who impressed Jurgen Klopp and made plea to Ryan Reynolds Wrexham are set to sign a player with Premier League and international experience, who was previously praised by manager Jurgen Klopp during his time at Liverpool Wrexham-bound Danny Ward was praised by Jurgen Klopp during his time at Liverpool (Image: Andrew Powell/Liverpool FC via Getty Images ) Wrexham are on the brink of securing a deal with a player who has previously been lauded by Jurgen Klopp and made overtures to the club's Hollywood owners. Wales international goalkeeper Danny Ward is poised for a medical this week as he plans to return to his hometown club on a free transfer. The 32-year-old's contract at Leicester City comes to an end on Monday and, as per the Mail, is set to provide cover for Wrexham's No.1 keeper, Arthur Okonkwo. ‌ Ward was born in Wrexham and progressed through the club's youth ranks before making a £100,000 move to Liverpool in January 2012. He later transferred to Leicester for £12.5 million in 2018, resulting in a substantial financial boost for the Red Dragons. ‌ During his six seasons with the Foxes, Ward made 52 appearances and has also racked up 44 caps for his country. His performances were once described as "brilliant" by former Liverpool manager Klopp during his spell at Anfield. The remarks came after Ward's Liverpool debut during a 2-1 victory against Bournemouth in April 2016. Having replaced Simon Mignolet in goal that day, Ward's performance did not go unnoticed by his manager. Speaking to BBC Sport, Klopp said: "Danny Ward was brilliant. Let the self-confidence grow of goalkeepers, they're normal human beings." It followed Ward's significant contribution to Huddersfield's promotion into the Premier League during his loan spell in 2016/17. Klopp said at the time: "That's very comfortable for the manager - three really good goalkeepers. It is like it is and nothing is decided. They can all show how good they are. ‌ "I don't want to bring doubt so that they start doubting. They are at a fantastic club and a fantastic football club needs fantastic goalkeepers. We had a really good goalkeeping season. "Yes, it was a little bit difficult for Loris but I'm sure he had his part in the development of Simon, who played a really good season. "And Danny played a fantastic season at Huddersfield with a big success at the end. We have three goalkeepers and they can all show what they are able to do, and then we will see who will start." ‌ Watch Welcome to Wrexham season 4 on Disney+ This article contains affiliate links, we will receive a commission on any sales we generate from it. Despite Ward ultimately not cementing his position, his Premier League experience could be invaluable, having played five matches for Leicester last season. His efforts did not prevent their relegation and the Foxes will now face off with Wrexham in the Championship next season. Wrexham have risen through the leagues with three consecutive promotions under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, progressing from the National League to the second tier. And Ward has been keeping a keen eye on his childhood club's remarkable rise. Article continues below While speaking on the Fearless in Devotion podcast back in February 2022, Ward said: "Some of the best years of my life were actually being in that youth team set-up at Wrexham. Those are memories that I hold dear. Get Ryan and Rob on the phone."

The 6ft 4in striker spent last season on loan with Italian rivals AC Milan, netting ten times in all competitions. But that wasn't enough to earn a permanent move as Milan suffered a disappointing season. And he could now be set for a new challenge in Turkey's Super Lig. READ MORE ON FOOTBALL REST IN PEACE Former England striker and Middlesbrough legend Alan Peacock has died aged 87 According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, a verbal agreement has been made between Roma and Besiktas, with Abraham set to jet in for a medical soon. Abraham would be a statement signing Solskjaer, who took the reins in Turkey in January after a three-year spell away from management following his ill-fated tenure with Manchester United. Abraham will join Besiktas' current front-man Ciro Immobile, who netted 15 league goals last season after making his own switch from Serie A in the summer. His arrival would bolster a squad full of ex-Premier League talent, including Arsenal and Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and ex-Spurs disappointment Gedson Fernandes.
