Fox News Hosts Gushed Over the Parade, With No Protests in Sight
On Fox News, it felt like Thanksgiving Day and Christmas rolled into one. 'You feel the energy here, everyone is so excited,' exulted Lawrence Jones, the 'Fox & Friends' host who served as an emcee of the network's celebratory coverage of President Trump's military parade in Washington on Saturday. 'When the president took the stage, you heard the people say 'U.S.A., U.S.A.!'' Mr. Jones was seated with his co-host, Emily Compagno, on a riser just above Constitution Avenue, as Abrams tanks rolled by and paratroopers swooped down from the sky. An on-screen fireworks graphic twinkled in the background. Their banter resembled the excitable 'Today' show crew on NBC during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Over the course of the three-hour event, which was held to celebrate the Army's 250th birthday — it happened to be Mr. Trump's 79th birthday, too — Fox News did not air footage of the 'No Kings' rallies that were taking place simultaneously in many cities in protest of the administration's policies. For updates, viewers could turn to CNN and MSNBC, which toggled between the parade and Saturday's other significant news events, including rocket attacks in the Middle East and the assassination of a Democratic politician in Minnesota. Clarissa Ward appeared live on CNN for several early-morning dispatches from Tel Aviv, and CNN and MSNBC correspondents reported from the ground in Los Angeles, where some protesters had clashed with law enforcement. Fox News's reporters have extensively covered those story lines over the past few days. But on Saturday evening, the channel devoted its broadcast to pomp and circumstance. One guest, the New York Post columnist Miranda Devine, popped by to praise what she called the parade's 'positive contrast to all the doom and gloom and the protests and the 'Dictator Trump' stuff that we've been seeing in New York and L.A. Mel Gibson slams California leadership after ‘rampant lawlessness and civil unrest'
Mel Gibson blasted California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for their handling of the violent protests that erupted in Los Angeles last weekend. The 69-year-old actor previously denounced Newsom and Bass for their involvement in the Palisades and Eaton fires that devastated Southern California communities in January. The "Braveheart" star vented his frustration over the local government's response to the ongoing protests on Fox News contributor Raymond Arroyo's "Arroyo Grande" podcast. "Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass have already proven their incompetence and poor leadership during the Los Angeles wildfires," Gibson said. "Now, as we experience rampant lawlessness and civil unrest, it's never been more clear," he added. "They're unable to respond effectively and responsibly during calamity. Whether it's sheer incompetence or outright malevolence, the reality is stark. "California's in a state of turmoil," Gibson added. "And I ask my fellow Angelenos, 'Why are Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass still in office? How much more of their destructive decision-making masquerading as leadership are we going to tolerate?' "It's time to take back our community and our state and put the power and the privilege in the hands of competent leaders whose goals are to protect us and the way of life this nation was founded upon and promises to offer." Fox News Digital reached out to Newsom and Bass for comment. WATCH: MEL GIBSON SLAMS CALIFORNIA LEADERSHIP AFTER 'RAMPANT LAWLESSNESS AND CIVIL UNREST' Gibson, who was appointed a special ambassador to Hollywood by President Donald Trump, lost his home in the Palisades Fire that broke out Jan. 7. In February, Gibson joined the Saving California movement in its efforts to recall Newsom. The "Passion of the Christ" director appeared at a press conference in Altadena Feb. 27. "We deserve much more and much better, and there is absolutely no adequate excuse the governor or mayor can make for this gross mismanagement and failure to preemptively deal with what they knew was coming," Gibson said, referring to Newsom and Bass, according to KTLA. "Was it incompetence? Was it indifference, complacency, carelessness? Was it negligence? Absolutely," Gibson added. The LA protests, which began as demonstrations against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) June 6, escalated into street violence, rioting and theft last weekend. In response, Trump authorized the deployment of 4,000 National Guard troops and 7,000 U.S. Marines to the nation's second most populous city. Trump took control of California's National Guard without the permission of Newsom, the first time in 60 years a president had federalized National Guard troops without a governor's request. Newsom, leading the resistance to Trump's moves, took legal action to try and reverse the order. A federal district court judge this week ruled that Trump's moves were illegal and ordered him to return control of the National Guard troops to Newsom. However, a federal appeals court temporarily blocked the lower court judge's ruling. The federal appeals court granted a stay, which left the National Guard in Trump's control until a hearing scheduled for Tuesday. Newsom and Bass have criticized Trump's deployment of the National Guard and expressed their support for immigrant communities while urging peaceful protest and condemning violence. On Tuesday, Bass ordered a curfew for parts of downtown Los Angeles, which was later extended through Saturday. Newsom, who is serving his second term as California governor, will not run again in 2026. Bass has announced she plans to seek re-election in 2026. New episodes of the "Arroyo Grande with Raymond Arroyo" podcast are released every Wednesday.

Trump's Military Parade Is Designed for TV, but It Won't Be on Every Channel
Fox News is airing an extensive four-hour special called 'Army 250 Parade.' CNN will carry the proceedings. And MSNBC is sticking with its usual liberal opinion shows. President Trump's military parade in Washington, celebrating the Army's 250 birthday and his own 79th, has the hallmarks of a made-for-TV event. The White House has hired an outside production company, Event Strategies Inc., which was responsible for some of Mr. Trump's Wrestlemania-style campaign rallies, and cameras will be rolling as 28 Abrams tanks and 6,700 soldiers process down Constitution Avenue. (Paratroopers will swoop in from above.) Cable news channels plan to cover the event along familiar lines. And America's three biggest television networks do not plan to carry the event live on their affiliates. Each had prior programming commitments that evening, although ABC, CBS and NBC say that coverage will be available digitally via their 24-hour streaming channels. At the time that Mr. Trump is scheduled to give remarks, CBS will be broadcasting a rerun of the comic procedural 'Elspeth,' NBC is set to air an episode of a game show called 'Password,' and ABC plans to carry the championship game of the UFL, a minor football league. The festivities are set to kick off at 6 p.m. Eastern and conclude roughly four hours later, after a country music concert and fireworks. Fox News has a full day of programming planned around the event, with appearances from several on-air personalities, including a few co-hosts of 'Fox & Friends.' (A former 'Friend,' Pete Hegseth, is now the defense secretary and has been closely involved in the parade.) Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
