Vietnam's Durian Farmers Power Up with XAG Drones to Boost Efficiency

MY THO, Vietnam, May 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Amid Vietnam's "durian gold rush," farmers are turning to smart agri-tech, notably XAG agricultural drones, to stay ahead. In the Mekong Delta, where durian exports have soared to $3.3 billion, growers use drones to cut costs, improve yields, and work more safely, adapting quickly to the demands of this booming fruit market.
Few understand these shifting tides better than Nguyễn Văn Hường, a lifelong farmer in Tiền Giang province. At 64, Hường and his wife manage more than 300 durian trees, along with 250 jackfruit and coconut trees, on a four-hectare farm. "Selling durians is like selling a house," he says, noting that a single mature durian tree can yield nearly 100 kg of fruit a year and earn him 15 to 16 million VND.
Hường's real edge, though, comes from his willingness to embrace innovation—a trait that traces back decades. "I was the first here to buy a backpack sprayer 50 years ago," he recalls proudly, believing firmly that "technology brings profits." Today, that same forward-thinking spirit once again sets Hường apart as a local pioneer, helping him tackle challenges and stay ahead of the curve.
Standing confidently in his lush orchard with a remote control in hand, Hường now relies on the XAG P150 agricultural drone—a tool that has completely changed his approach to crop protection. Before, he would row his boat between the trees, stand near each trunk, and reach up with a long-handled sprayer to coat the highest branches, which often failed to cover thoroughly and left him exhausted. "On windy days, chemicals would get on my head and in my eyes," he explains.
By late 2024, motivated to "protect health and change traditional agriculture," Hường invested in the drone, making the plant protection process safer, more efficient, and far less labor-intensive. It took him just three days to learn how to operate the drone, and now he manages every aspect of pesticide spraying with only a few taps on the screen.
The impact was immediate. Hường estimates that the P150's intelligent RevoSpray system cuts water use per spray from 3,000 to just 800 liters, and what once took two tiring days now finishes in just three hours. Equipped with a 70-liter smart liquid tank and rotary atomization nozzles, the drone can spray evenly and thoroughly, sending droplets deep into the canopy where pests lurk and manual spraying can't reach. "It used to be dizzying wearing a mask and spraying by hand, but now I can keep my distance and let the drone handle it more accurately," Hường says.
The financial impact is also expected to be substantial. "Using drones for spraying can reduce my overall costs by about one-third. With expenses down and our work made easier, the profits would be higher," he proudly exclaims. Last season, nearly one billion VND in revenue came from just 100 mature durian trees, thanks to higher yields and the export surge.
Hường's experience reflects a wider movement. According to a study by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the adoption of agricultural drones in Southeast Asia led to yield increases of up to 20% and a 30% reduction in pesticide use. For Vietnamese smallholders in regions like the Mekong Delta, adopting such technologies isn't just about profit, it's also about keeping pace with rising global expectations and unpredictable weather.
Word of Hường's success has spread in the community. "If anyone asks, I'm happy to share my experience. This drone is almost fully autonomous and delivers much better spraying quality. Its automatic return-to-home function is especially convenient," he says. "I'm really satisfied with this drone."
From the days of hauling heavy sprayers through his orchard to now guiding a drone above bountiful trees, Hường embodies the evolution of Vietnamese farming—proving that with the right tools and openness to change, small family farms can still thrive in an increasingly competitive world.

Set up by the Biden administration in 2023, AISI operated within the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) to research risks in widely-used AI systems like OpenAI's ChatGPT or Anthropic's Claude. The move to dismantle the body had been expected for some time. In February, as JD Vance headed to France for a major AI summit, his delegation did not include anyone from the AI Safety Institute, Reuters reported at the time. The agency's inaugural director Elizabeth Kelly had stepped down earlier in the month. The Commerce Department's announcement marking the change is thin on details about the reorganization, but it appears the aim is to favor innovation over red tape. 'For far too long, censorship and regulations have been used under the guise of national security. Innovators will no longer be limited by these standards. CAISI will evaluate and enhance U.S. innovation of these rapidly developing commercial AI systems while ensuring they remain secure to our national security standards,' said Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. What could be gleaned from Lutnick's paradoxical phrasing – national security-focused standards are limiting, but America needs national security-focused standards – is that it's very difficult to tell just how much the new body will differ from the old one. The announcement goes on to state that CAISI will 'assist industry to develop voluntary standards' in AI, which summed up much of what the old body did. Similarly, just as the AI Safety Institute was tasked with assessing risks in artificial intelligence, CAISI will 'lead unclassified evaluations of AI capabilities that may pose risks to national security.' CAISI will also still be a part of NIST. And, despite Lutnick's apparent disdain for standards, the Commerce press release concludes that CAISI will 'ensure U.S. dominance of international AI standards.' That there's little obvious change between the Institute and CAISI might alleviate any immediate concerns the U.S. is abandoning commitments to keep AI safe. Just earlier this year, a coalition of companies, nonprofits and academics called on Congress to codify the Institute's existence before the year was up. That included major players like OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which had agreements to work with the agency on research projects. What happens to those is now up in the air. Nathan Vilas Laatsch, a 28-year-old IT specialist at the Defense Intelligence Agency, has been arrested and charged with leaking state secrets after becoming upset at the Trump administration. The DOJ did not specify to which country Laatsch allegedly tried to pass secrets, sources told the Washington Post it was Germany. He was caught out by undercover agents posing as interested parties, according to the DOJ. Europol announced it had identified more than 2,000 links 'pointing to jihadist and right-wing violent extremist and terrorist propaganda targeting minors.' The agency warned that it had seen terrorists using AI to generate content like short videos and memes 'designed to resonate with younger audiences.' A 63-year-old British man, John Miller, was charged alongside a Chinese national by the Department of Justice with conspiring to ship missiles, air defense radar, drones and unspecified 'cryptographic devices' to China. They're also charged with trying to stalk and harass an individual who was planning protests against Chinese president Xi.

EVs Are Rewiring Risk For Manufacturers

The internal combustion engine (ICE) has been steadily improving for more than 100 years, giving us cars that are almost unrecognisable from those early, groundbreaking days of the Ford Model T. This, in turn, has made driving a faster, safer, more fuel-efficient, and more enjoyable experience for everyone. Now electric vehicles (EVs) mark a fundamental shift. One that not only paves the way to innovative changes in how passenger vehicles are designed, built, and maintained, but that will also kickstart a whole new era of risk for manufacturers. Driving this transformation are three key factors, the first of which is consumer dynamics. To date, EV adoption has actually been slower than many projected with only a quarter of car buyers seriously considering going fully electric due to concerns around cost, range and charging time. This has seen the manufacturing industry double down on addressing these concerns with new models that travel further and charge faster. The second factor is battery innovation. Right now, lithium-ion is found in 90% of US EVs, but their performance and safety features don't completely meet all customer requirements. Interest in alternative designs is therefore accelerating too – from iron- and sulphur-based lithium variants to sodium-ion and hydrogen cells. All have their own advantages and disadvantages, leading manufacturers to invest in understanding how they perform in the full life cycle of a user experience. The third and final driver of change is the supply chain itself. EVs use up to three times more chips than ICE vehicles and therefore rely heavily on materials sourced and processed overseas. China alone accounts for 70% of global battery production. Add in geopolitical volatility, tariff controversies, ongoing labor shortages, and localized incidents like the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and it's clear: EV supply chains are more stretched and unpredictable than ever – requiring flexible and proactive risk mitigation frameworks to match. There are new, less familiar threats for manufacturers to counter too. While ICE and hybrid vehicles actually catch fire more frequently, EV fires tend to burn hotter and longer – with several high-profile cases making the news and rocking consumer trust. Responding to this risk requires specialized equipment and training for staff, along with a deeper knowledge of chemistry, housing, and fire suppression. Then there's cyber. EVs are, by nature, software-defined machines that are deeply integrated with networks and cloud platforms. From code-level bugs to coordinated hacks, this opens up new areas of potential vulnerability, all capable of causing costly reputational damage and liability claims. Even product recalls are changing. In contrast to ICE vehicle breakdowns, EV issues can often be fixed with over-the-air updates and patches. Yet while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) still classifies these events as recalls, the cost and customer experience are entirely different. This, in turn, forces insurers and manufacturers to re-examine the way they calculate risk along with how they structure mitigation strategies going forward. So how should the manufacturing industry respond? First and foremost, by empowering risk managers to lead in this evolving environment and become a central part of a broader, stronger, more connected ecosystem within their own companies. One that connects stakeholders across R&D, supply chain, operations, IT, and even government relations to create a comprehensive framework for analysing and responding to risk. The way manufacturers deploy data must evolve too. Unlike with ICE vehicles, firms don't have decades of EV insights to fall back on in their decision-making and planning. So instead, they should lean into forward-looking indicators, using machinery data on the shop floor to identify quality risks and limit the likelihood of product liability and recall. Leveraging smarter building data in areas like fire protection and structural soundness will also be vital, as will utilizing supply chain visibility information and scoring models for business tax. Encouragingly, much of this data is already available today; it now just needs to be viewed with a risk lens. Rather than simply present data at renewal time, manufacturers and brokers should therefore engage in an ongoing dialogue with carriers about emerging threats, evolving mitigations, and the specific steps they are taking to reduce exposure. This will help shape limits and premiums that fit the realities of their operating landscape. In fact, this ability to focus on the future is, perhaps, the most important shift of all. As EVs become an ever more frequent sight on our roads and in our factories, the passenger vehicle market will be defined by both new methods of manufacturing and new approaches to risk. The firms that lead this new era will be those with their eyes on the road ahead, not in the rear view mirror.
