Fit-again Feyi-Waboso named in England training camp

BBC News20-05-2025

Exeter and England wing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso's prospects of playing Test rugby this summer increased after the 22-year-old was selected for a two-day England training camp this week.Feyi-Waboso has not played since dislocating his shoulder in December, with his comeback delayed by a setback suffered at an England camp in February.Gloucester centre Seb Atkinson, Leicester back row Emeke Ilione and Sale midfielder Rekeiti Ma'asi-White are also included in a 33-strong group that does not include either British and Irish Lions, or players from Northampton and Bath, who are preparing for European finals this weekend.Gloucester's 20-year-old prop Afolabi Fasogbon, who was ruled out of Six Nations contention with an ankle injury, is named, along with the likes of Jamie George, George Ford and Ben Curry, who missed out on Lions selection earlier this month.
England training squad
Forwards:Joe Batley (Bristol Bears), Fin Baxter (Harlequins), Richard Capstick (Exeter Chiefs), Arthur Clark (Gloucester Rugby), Ben Curry (Sale Sharks), Theo Dan (Saracens), Alex Dombrandt (Harlequins), Afolabi Fasogbon (Gloucester Rugby), Jamie George (Saracens), Joe Heyes (Leicester Tigers), Emeka Ilione (Leicester Tigers), Nick Isiekwe (Saracens), Jack Kenningham (Harlequins), Gabriel Oghre (Bristol Bears), Asher Opoku-Fordjour (Sale Shark), Bevan Rodd (Sale Sharks), Tom Willis (Saracens)Backs:Charlie Atkinson (Gloucester Rugby), Seb Atkinson (Gloucester Rugby), Oscar Beard (Harlequins), Joe Carpenter (Sale Sharks), Tobias Elliott (Saracens), Immanuel Feyi-Waboso (Exeter Chiefs), George Ford (Sale Sharks), Rekeiti Ma'asi-White (Sale Sharks), Cadan Murley (Harlequins), Luke Northmore (Harlequins), Raffi Quirke (Sale Sharks), Harry Randall (Bristol Bears), Tom Roebuck (Sale Sharks), Henry Slade (Exeter Chiefs), Freddie Steward (Leicester Tigers), Jack van Poortvliet (Leicester Tigers)
Feyi-Waboso had a breakout campaign last season, scoring his first international try off the bench in Six Nations defeat by Scotland, before crossing in all three matches on England's summer tour of Japan and New Zealand. His top-end pace brings an extra dimension to England's attack and was sorely missed despite the team finishing second in this year's Six Nations.Exeter and England publicly disagreed over how his injury treated, with the recently-signed Professional Game Partnership giving England a greater say in the conditioning and rehabilitation of their centrally contracted players.Exeter head coach Rob Baxter indicated earlier this month that Feyi-Waboso could get a run-out in the Chiefs' final game of the season against Sale on 31 May.Intriguingly, British and Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell suggested that he would supplement his initial 38-man selection for the tour of Australia with later call-ups for those who need a chance to prove their fitness.England will play Argentina in Buenos Aires and San Juan on 5 July and 12 July respectively before a one-off Test against the United States on 19 July in Washington. They will play an uncapped warm-up match against a France XV on 21 June at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.

Friday briefing: Lamine Yamal stars for Spain and ‘no crisis' for Sarina Wiegman

England boss Sarina Wiegman named her squad for Euro 2025 – insisting there was no 'crisis' in the Lionesses' camp. Russell Martin was announced as the new Rangers manager and Wales geared up for their next World Cup qualifier in Cardiff on Friday night, when Scotland and the Republic of Ireland will both play friendlies. An all-time classic in the Nations League semi-finals 🤯#NationsLeague — UEFA EURO (@UEFAEURO) June 5, 2025 Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal scored twice as holders Spain beat France 5-4 in an entertaining heavyweight clash in Stuttgart to book their place in the Nations League final against Portugal. Goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Merino in the space of three minutes midway through the first half had put the European champions in control. Yamal, 17, slotted in a penalty soon after the restart, with Pedri then swiftly clipping home a fourth before Kylian Mbappe pulled a goal back for France from the spot in the 59th minute. After Lamal showed more fine close control to slide in a second goal, Lyon winger Rayan Cherki marked his debut off the bench when he crashed in a volley with 10 minutes left. A late own goal from Dani Vivian saw France claw back another before Randal Kolo Muani headed in during stoppage time. Spain, though, held out to make a third straight Nations League final, which will be played in Munich on Sunday. England boss Sarina Wiegman insisted there was no 'crisis' as she named a 23-strong squad for Euro 2025 following a tumultuous month for the Lionesses. It has been a far from settled few weeks as England prepared to defend their European crown, opening the campaign against France in Zurich on July 5. Both goalkeeper Mary Earps and attacker Fran Kirby had announced their retirement from international football, while defender Millie Bright pulled out of the tournament to prioritize her mental health, with Chelsea later confirming she had undergone minor knee surgery. Wiegman, though, dismissed the idea the Lionesses camp is unsettled. Chelsea striker Lauren James, recovering from a hamstring injury, has been included in the squad, alongside 19-year-old Michelle Agyemang. 'We're going with this 23 to the Euros and I'm comfortable, happy and excited. For me it doesn't feel like a crisis at all,' Wiegman said. 'There is always noise, so we expect noise before we go into a tournament. The difference is in my first tournament, the attention and visibility with the women's team has increased. 'We have to deal with it and move on and focus on football.' Wales boss Craig Bellamy says one of the world's worst football teams Liechtenstein have given him sleepless nights ahead of their World Cup qualifier. Liechtenstein – ranked 205th out of FIFA's 210 nations – have not won a competitive game since September 2020, and lost their opening two World Cup qualifiers in March. Bellamy, though, warned against any sense of complacency from his side in Cardiff on Friday night. 'We've prepared for Liechtenstein as we did for Turkey and everyone else – it doesn't matter who we play against,' the Wales boss said. 'I was up late last night. I didn't sleep well. Does that tell you something? I treat every team the same.' New Rangers head coach Russell Martin has told sceptics he is looking to prove them wrong. News of the former MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton manager's three-year deal at Ibrox has not gone down well with some supporters. However, former Scotland defender Martin, who had an unsuccessful loan period at Rangers in 2018, is ready to meet the challenges head on. 💙 — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) June 5, 2025 'My whole career has been based on proving people wrong, really. At every level I got questioned,' former Norwich captain Martin, 39, said. 'I got to the Premier League as a player, I wasn't convinced I could do it, but I managed to establish myself there for a little while, played international football, which I'm incredibly proud of. 'So it's the same again as a manager – I had to prove people wrong at every opportunity.' England boss Thomas Tuchel will hold a press conference on Friday afternoon ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Andorra in Barcelona. Wales later take on Liechtenstein in their Group J fixture in Cardiff, while Scotland play a friendly against Iceland as do the Republic of Ireland when they host Senegal. Ahead of all that on Friday morning, England under-21s coach Lee Carsley will name his squad for the upcoming European Championships in Slovakia.

Is 'generational talent' Branthwaite 'priceless'? Send us your thoughts

With a first summer transfer window under the new ownership and a number of players out of contract, Everton could be set for a busy and transitional fans will be keeping a close eye on what happens with Jarrad Branthwaite, the defender having attracted interest previously and being one of the club's most highly valued fan Lee McClean told BBC Radio Merseyside: "My number one priority is keeping him at all costs. I would refute any sort of bids for him and would love to work around it if we possibly can and explore every option."I think he is priceless, he is a generational talent."Despite Everton's struggles, and we have just finished 13th again, I think we are third or fourth in defensive stats. If you look at Everton's goalkeeper and centre-half pairing, it is almost faultless. Even the top four would probably have a decision to make if they were given the option to replace what they have got with what Everton have got - it is that good."So even if we got £100m [for Branthwaite], what are you going to do with it? You are not going to improve on what we have got because Everton aren't in a position to go and pick a £50m centre-back from the top four or five in Europe because we are just not."But you have to be realistic. As much as we are partisan and romantic and would love Jarrad Branthwaite to stay with Everton like Dave Watson for the whole of his career, football has changed."He can be anything he wants to be, he can play for any club in Europe, and we are not talking potential - he is the real deal now. His ceiling has still got so much more left, he has still got so much headroom."So unless Everton can match his ambition and do something like Aston Villa or Nottingham Forest have done, then Branthwaite has got every reason to say 'I'm gone'."How do you feel about Branthwaite's future with Everton? Do they need to keep him at all costs?Let us knowListen to the full discussion on BBC Sounds

How Man United might line up with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in the team

Manchester United's drastic summer rebuild has begun in earnest with the £62.5m capture of Wolves' Matheus Cunha all but rubber-stamped and the pursuit of Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo in full swing. Following a disastrous season, a raft of players are set to leave the club with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony among several high earners expected to depart, while Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton have not been offered new contracts. Question marks also hang over the futures of Rasmus Hojlund, Casemiro and Andre Onana. Ruben Amorim has at least persuaded captain Bruno Fernandes to stay at the club after strong interest from Saudi Arabia, and the coach now needs his recruitment department to work some magic with no Champions League football to lure potential signings and sales required to meet profit and sustainability rules. We know what formation Amorim will use next season, wedded as he is to 3-4-3. But which players will be in his starting XI and how will they line up? Goalkeeper Onana's season was riddled with mistakes and he briefly lost his place to back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who wasn't much better. Expect a new signing in between the posts come August, but Onana will likely continue wearing the gloves if no one arrives. Centre backs This is one part of the pitch where Amorim doesn't necessarily need reinforcements. Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro provide four decent options for three positions, while Luke Shaw and Noussair Mazraoui can slot into the wider roles if needed. Wing-backs The left side remains a concern, with Shaw lacking the fitness record to be a reliable season-long option and January signing Patrick Dorgu still looking like raw talent rather than the finished article. Harry Amass is not quite ready to step up, while it was clear throughout the campaign that Diogo Dalot does not work as an inverted wing-back on the left. A new signing may be needed. Mazraoui was one of very few United players who could say they had a positive season, and the Moroccan looked like a good solution for the right wing-back role during the latter half of the campaign. A more adventurous option out wide would be Amad Diallo, especially if new attacking reinforcements fill the advanced roles in the team. Central midfielders The midfield axis was helmed by Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte for much of the season, with mixed success, and Bruno Fernandes often found himself dropping back there later in games as Amorim made changes. With Casemiro's future up in the air, Ugarte and Fernandes seem like the most natural partnership to start the new season, while Kobbie Mainoo is another option if he can refind his form and sharpness. But a new signing is needed given the departure of Christian Eriksen. No 10s Matheus Cunha was bought for exactly this role as he seeks to drive the team forwards from the inside right channel. Who will fill the other spot? Fernandes and Amad are the most likely options from the current squad, while Bryan Mbeumo would provide some energy and goalscoring nous should he sign, and his off-ball movement would complement Cunha's dribbling and vision. Mason Mount will be another option here if he can stay fit. Striker United are actively searching for a new forward to lead the line, having failed in their pursuit of Ipswich Town's Liam Delap, now of Chelsea. Signed from Atalanta two years ago, Hojlund is being linked with a move back to Italy after a frustrating season in front of goal, while Joshua Zirkzee has so far proved a useful option rather than a leading man. Amorim will hope to have a new shiny No 9 in place when the season starts, and Mbuemo can play the role if needed.
