Philippines, US launch joint drills aimed at ‘deterrence'
MANILA: The Philippine and US air forces kicked off joint exercises Monday aimed at boosting operational coordination and enhancing 'strategic deterrence,' Manila's military said.The drills follow months of confrontations between Beijing and Manila over disputed areas of the South China Sea, with significantly larger US-Philippine air, land and sea exercises set for late April.'Enhancing combat readiness and elevating joint mission effectiveness' would be central to the Cope Thunder exercise, Philippine Air Force commander Arthur Cordura said Monday at a ceremony to launch the drills.Military ties between the Philippines and United States have deepened since the 2022 election of President Ferdinand Marcos, with Manila pushing back on sweeping Chinese claims in the South China Sea that an international tribunal has ruled are without merit.The US State Department last week approved a long-mooted sale of F-16 fighter jets to the Philippines, though Manila said the deal was 'still in the negotiation phase.'Speaking at Monday's ceremony, US Major General Christopher Sheppard said that 'the pace of our alliance is accelerating.'Cope Thunder, which will continue through April 18, aims to enhance 'asymmetric warfare capabilities,' operational coordination and strategic deterrence, according to the Philippine Air Force.'Further down the road, we look forward to the seamless transition to exercise Balikatan, which will continue to push the boundaries of our interoperability,' Cordura added.Like the majority of Balikatan's planned activities, Cope Thunder will be conducted on northern Luzon island, the area of the Philippines closest to Taiwan.As China encircled Taiwan with planes and ships in a simulated blockade last week, Philippine military chief Romeo Brawner warned troops that their country would 'inevitably' be involved should the self-ruled island be invaded.Beijing insists Taiwan is part of its territory and has threatened to forcefully bring under its control.While Manila later said Brawner's comments were primarily referencing efforts to retrieve Filipino workers in Taiwan, the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement with Washington gives US forces access to nine bases in the country.One is a naval facility at Cagayan's Santa Ana about 400 kilometers from Taiwan.During a recent visit to Manila, US Defense Chief Pete Hegseth said Washington was 'doubling down' on its alliance with the archipelago nation.'Deterrence is necessary around the world, but specifically in this region, in your country – considering the threats from the Communist Chinese,' he said on March 28.

Red Sea marine traffic has increased by 60% to 36-37 ships a day since August 2024, but is still short of volumes seen before Yemen's Houthis began attacking ships in the region, according to the commander of the EU's Aspides naval mission. The number of merchant ships using the narrow Bab al-Mandab strait increased after missile and drone attacks by the Houthis slowed and the US and the extremist group signed a ceasefire deal, Rear Admiral Vasileios Gryparis said in an interview in Madrid. But shipping traffic, which reached a low of 20-23 ships daily in August last year, is still short of an average of 72-75 ships a day seen before the Houthis began attacks in the Red Sea in November in 2023 in support of Palestinians over Israel's war in Gaza, said Gryparis according to Reuters. The mission, which was established to safeguard navigation in the strategic trade route linking the Mediterranean with the Gulf of Asia through the Suez Canal, was extended in February when it was also tasked with tracking illegal arms shipments and monitoring vessels carrying sanctioned Russian oil. The last attack on a merchant ship took place in November 2024 and the Houthis have also narrowed their objectives, saying their targets are Israeli ships and ships that have a connection with Israel or have docked at an Israeli port, Gryparis said. "If you have a vessel that does not correspond to this criteria... there is a huge possibility - more than 99% - that you're not going to be targeted by the Houthis," Gryparis said. Still, Gryparis said he could not guarantee that merchant ships won't be attacked. Some companies have been deterred from using the route because of the mission's lack of ships, which can cause delays of as much as a week for those seeking to be escorted through the area, he said. He said the mission has between two and three ships operating at one time and has requested the EU provide it with 10 ships to increase its capacity for protection. The mission has provided close protection to 476 ships, shot down 18 drones, destroyed two remote-controlled boats used to attack ships and intercepted four ballistic missiles, he said.

Israel attacks suburbs of Beirut, targeting alleged Hezbollah ‘drone factories'
BEIRUT — The Israeli military carried out strikes on Hezbollah 'drone factories' in southern Lebanon and suburbs of Beirut on Thursday, as large plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the Lebanese capital. The Israeli attack marked its biggest escalation in Lebanon since the US-brokered ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah in November. The Israel Defense Forces said it was striking 'terror targets of the Hezbollah Aerial Unit (127)' in the southern suburb of Dahieh, Beirut. NNA news reported strikes from Israeli drones, saying that a 'series of warning strikes, numbering more than seven' had targeted the city's southern suburbs. The news outlet also said that Israeli drones carried out an airstrike on the town of Ain Qana in Lebanon's Iklim Tuffah region. Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz posted on X shortly after the strikes were carried out, saying that the country holds the Lebanese government 'directly responsible for preventing violations of the ceasefire and all terrorist activity against the State of Israel.' 'We will continue to enforce the ceasefire rules without any compromises,' Katz added. Israel previously struck the same neighborhood, a Hezbollah stronghold, in late March. US-backed GHF distributing aid in Gaza delays reopening sites
A controversial private company distributing aid in Gaza, backed by the US and Israel, had yet to reopen its distribution sites in the enclave by mid-morning on Thursday, a day after shutting them following a series of deadly shootings close to its operations. The US-based Gaza Humanitarian Foundation had said on Wednesday that its sites would not reopen at their usual time due to maintenance and repair work. It did not say when the locations would reopen. A Palestinian father of four in Gaza's Khan Younis, who asked not to be identified over safety concerns, told Reuters the GHF site in nearby Rafah had not reopened by mid morning. GHF did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
