Akshaya hallmark centre seized for illegal gold jewellery hallmarking
Vijayawada: Sleuths of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Vijayawada, seized Akshaya Hallmark and Testing Centre at Jai Hind Complex after it was found to be operating without mandatory BIS recognition and was issuing hallmark symbols on gold ornaments, in constituting a violation under Section 14 of the BIS Act, 2016.
A BIS team led by joint directors B Rajgopal and K Sai Kaushik conducted a surprise search operation and found out that the firm was illegally hallmarking gold jewellery without BIS approval. The center was issuing hallmark symbols such as '22K916' without a valid Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID), a clear infringement of BIS norms.
Further, a laser marking machine being used for unauthorized hallmarking activities was seized during the operation.
All seized items have been taken into BIS custody for further legal action.
On the occasion, BIS Vijayawada officials emphasised: "BIS strongly advises all jewellers and hallmarking centers to adhere to BIS regulations. Unauthorised hallmarking is a serious offence and will not be tolerated. Vigilance and enforcement actions will continue unabated to prevent any misuse or violation."
BIS Vijayawada director Prem Sajani Patnala, stated that appropriate legal action will be initiated under Section 29 of the BIS Act, 2016, which provides for imprisonment up to one year, or a fine not less than Rs 1,00,000, which may extend up to five times the value of the goods involved, or both.
The BIS director further appealed consumers to report instances of Standard mark misuse (use of ISI mark or hallmarking without HUID) to the BIS Vijayawada Branch Office, located at the First Floor, AP Markfed Building, APIIC Colony Road, Auto Nagar, Vijayawada - 520007.

Parnasree digi arrest: 8 from Rajasthan held in New Town, Hwh
Kolkata: Barely two weeks after a young assistant director-ranked official of the Bureau of Indian Standards — the national standards body under the ministry of consumer affairs — in Kolkata was allegedly held under "digital arrest" for four days and defrauded of Rs 25 lakh by cyber criminals who accused him of smuggling banned drugs, the south-west division cyber cell, along with Parnasree police, busted the inter-state gang and arrested eight persons. The arrests were carried out at Eco Park in New Town and Golabari in Howrah following a complaint by Souvik Sikdar, deputy director of BIS, at Parnashree PS on May 23. The accused allegedly impersonated CBI officials and coerced Sikdar into transferring funds under the pretext of probing a narcotics case. "All the accused are residents of Jodhpur, Rajasthan. They first took rooms at New Town, Rajarhat, and thereafter shifted location almost daily to other places, later dividing into two groups and starting to operate from Howrah, too. We believe they are involved in other similar cases too," said DC (SWD-Behala) Rahul De. Sikdar is a resident of Tetultala near Sakuntala Park in Behala. Three suspects — Narpat Singh, Rajendra Soni, and Harish Kumar — were apprehended from Eco Park on June 5. Based on their statements, five more persons — Manohar, Sangram Singh, Suraj, Dilip, and Jitendra — were arrested made in Howrah the following day. DM order denying arms licence to sportsperson set aside by HC
Prayagraj: The Allahabad high court has set aside Deoria district magistrate's order dated May 3, whereby he had denied arms licence to sportsperson Gaurav Gupta , who had required it for training and competition purpose. In the decision dated Jun 2, Justice Piyush Agrawal also remanded the matter to Deoria district magistrate, for deciding afresh application of the petitioner for grant of arm licence for sports training and competitions by passing a reasoned and speaking order, after giving due opportunity to the petitioner to cure the defect, if any, as well as to provide all documentary evidence/material, as required under the aforesaid rules, within a period of 15 days from date of production of certified copy of the order. Through the present writ petition, the petitioner, a sportsman, assailed the order dated May 3, passed by Deoria district magistrate, whereby his application for arms licence was rejected. The counsel for the petitioner submitted that in pursuance to the order dated Feb 27 of this court, the licensing authority had rejected the application of the petitioner for grant of arm licence by holding some defects in the sports certificate attached by him. The certificate has been issued to the petitioner as a junior shooter and since the petitioner's category of shooting was not defined well and no affidavit with regard to the same had been filed, as per Arms Rules, 2016, the arms licence to the petitioner could not be granted. Counsel for petitioner further submitted that with regard to the said defect, if any, no opportunity was given to the petitioner to cure the same. He further submitted that since the petitioner had to participate in the upcoming pre-Uttar Pradesh state shooting championship competition, to be held in beginning of July, the petitioner shall be disqualified from participating in absence of a fire-arm licence. He also stated that the above said ground on which the application of the petitioner had been rejected, could be cured. On the other hand, state govt's counsel supported the DM's order, which was under challenge, submitting that since the petitioner had failed to provide necessary documentary evidence in support of his application, the application of the petitioner had rightly been rejected. He submitted that in the said application for grant of arms licence, the petitioner had not disclosed details as required under the Arms Rules, 2016. After hearing the parties, perusal of the said application showed that no column had been framed as per aforesaid rules as to the detailed information/evidence of the petitioner as a 'Junior Shooter'. Further, the impugned order (the order under challenge) did not refer to any opportunity being granted to the petitioner to cure the defect as pointed out in the impugned order. "In view of peculiar facts and circumstances of the case as stated, the impugned order dated May 3, cannot be justified in the eyes of law and the same is hereby set aside," the court added.
