A 13-year-old boy was taken to a hospital Thursday afternoon after a police cruiser struck him while he ran across the street in Newburyport, according to police.
Police and firefighters responded to the crash in front of Rupert A. Nock Middle School around 2:30 p.m., the Newburyport Police Department said in a press release. A preliminary investigation determined that a marked police cruiser traveling east on Low Street hit a student from the school around the time of dismissal.
The police officer driving the cruiser was not responding to an emergency at the time of the crash, police said. Several witnesses said the boy 'darted out' from between two parked cars.
'Preliminary investigation and witness accounts suggest that the cruiser had no warning and that there was nothing the officer could have done to avoid the accident,' the press release reads.
The officer driving the cruiser was not injured in the crash and immediately got out and provided medical aid to the student, police said. The boy was taken by ambulance to Anna Jacques Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
'This is an extremely traumatic event for everyone involved,' Newburyport City Marshal Matthew Simons said in the release. 'I'm relieved that the student was not injured seriously and grateful to the officer involved for acting calmly while being involved in a very stressful event. The officer's attentiveness and quick reaction undoubtedly prevented what could have been more serious injuries.'
Newburyport Police Sgt. Jason Kohan is still investigating the crash, police said. Anyone who witnessed the collision and has not already spoken with police is asked to call them at 978-462-4411, ext. 1.

Ex-CPA admits to bank fraud conspiracy that cost lenders millions

SPRINGFIELD — A former accountant pleaded guilty in federal court to participating in a conspiracy that prosecutors say obtained commercial mortgages for area properties using false information. Christine Gendron, 61, pleaded guilty before Judge Mark G. Mastroianni on Friday to one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, according to U.S. Attorney's Office spokesperson Caroline Ferguson. Gendron's sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 30. Gendron — whose certified public accountant status expired in June 2023 — described herself as 'resident CPA' of JLL Realty Developers, according to a statement of facts attached to her plea agreement signed April 16. She was sister to one of the partners of the company, Jeannette Norman. Norman's federal case is still pending. Norman, court documents note, was a vice president at Goldman Sachs between 1998 and 2007. The other partner of JLL Realty Developers was Louis Masaschi, Gendron's brother in law. In April, he pleaded guilty to wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. His sentencing is set for July. Gendron, the statement of facts reads, helped submit false documents, such as rent rolls, and profit and loss statements, starting in May 2016, to obtain commercial loans for properties in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. The documents 'contained inflated monthly rental payments and lease expiration dates ... that bore the signatures of Masaschi or Norman, as well as the forged signatures of the tenants,' says the statement of facts. Prosecutors wrote in court documents that JLL Realty tried to obtain $60 million in commercial loans, although some financial institutions did not issue the money. 'After receiving these loans, Masachi, Norman, and their companies made some or no payments and ultimately defaulted on the loans, causing substantial loses to the commercial Lenders,' documents state. Altogether, the financial institutions lost $19.3 million. Among the affected financial institutions, Workers Credit Union loaned JLL Realty $11.5 million in 2018 after the group put up an East Longmeadow property as collateral. Ultimately, the Littleton-based financial institution lost $2 million, according to the statement of facts. In 2017, Springfield-based Freedom Credit Union lent the group $6.25 million based on the collateral of three properties in Springfield and ended up losing $5.37 million, according to court documents. A year later, JLL Realty tried to obtain a $400,000 loan from the credit union, but was unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Berkshire Bank denied JLL Realty's two applications for commercial loans in 2018, one for $11 million and another for $3 million, according to court records. The financial institutions did not immediately return requests for comments. Gendron, court documents state, did not personally guarantee the loan nor receive the proceeds of the loans. She only collected a salary at JLL Realty, which totaled about $393,000 between 2015 and 2022, court records say. Prosecutors in April sought the forfeiture of Gendron's full salary. Special agents with the FBI visited Gendron at her Feeding Hills home in May 2021, according to information filed with the court in April. 'Gendron falsely stated that she was unaware of any fraudulently obtained loans, and that it would surprise her that (her co-conspirators) would submit fraudulent documents to the bank,' prosecutors wrote. Gendron's attorney did not immediately return a request for comment. Saskatchewan RCMP investigating after ‘hateful symbol' painted on rainbow sidewalk

TISDALE - RCMP say they're investigating after they say a 'hateful symbol' was painted on a rainbow crosswalk in a Saskatchewan town. Mounties say they believe the crosswalk, painted in celebration of Pride month, was vandalized earlier this week in Tisdale, northeast of Saskatoon. An image posted to social media shows a black swastika had been painted on the crosswalk. A statement from Chief Administrative Officer Lovely Magnaye says the town is disappointed by the matter and is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Towns and cities across Saskatchewan, Canada and the world mark Pride month to recognize those in the LGBTQ+ community. Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP or Crime Stoppers. 'Let's stand together against this kind of behaviour and continue to take pride in the place we all call home,' Magnaye said in the town's statement. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 13, 2025.

Tisdale leaders speak out after defacement of Pride crosswalk

TISDALE — Leaders in Tisdale are showing support and condemning the hate that transpired on June 12 at Tisdale Middle and Secondary School (TMSS). The TMSS True Colours GSA Club, in partnership with Suncrest College, painted the Recplex crosswalk in rainbow colours for Pride Month. This was meant to be a vibrant display and a powerful reminder that LGBTQ2S+ people are seen, respected and belong, said TMSS in a social media post the day before it was defaced with a swastika . Skid marks from a vehicle were also observed. There has been a strong wave of support for Pride Month and what it represents to community members, North East School Division (NESD) leadership and youth. Young Tisdale community member Baylee Cresswell showed her support on social media, disapproving of the vandalism. Cresswell took to social media to support those who feel targeted and to condemn the actions of the perpetrators: 'To the kids in the GSA that painted the sidewalk and any person in Tisdale that is a part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, I've been you, and my heart hurts for you. ... Your voice and acts are valuable and lifesaving to those who feel they cannot speak up for themselves.' Lori Kidney, NESD board chair, also responded on social media. 'The sidewalk was a beautiful and courageous student-led statement of belonging for all. Its defacement is a painful reminder that the work of building inclusive, compassionate communities must continue, and that we each have a role to play in standing up against hate,' she wrote. 'As your local trustee and as a board, we fully support the leadership of our students, school staff, and administrators who have responded with resolve, unity, and care. We also acknowledge the swift action taken by the Town of Tisdale and the RCMP in their efforts to investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable.' Tisdale RCMP are investigating the incident involving a Pride crosswalk at a community facility on 101st Street. A hateful symbol was discovered painted over the flag between 9:45 p.m. on June 11 and 4 a.m. on June 12. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area during that time is asked to contact Tisdale RCMP at 310-RCMP.
