Pence received the award 'for putting his life and career on the line to ensure the constitutional transfer of presidential power on Jan. 6, 2021,' the JFK Library Foundation said in
On Jan. 6, 2021, as rioters who contended the election was stolen took over the US Capitol chanting, 'Hang Mike Pence!' he ensured the constitutionally mandated transfer of power.
Pence remained in the Capitol during the riot, despite Secret Service urging him to evacuate, and coordinated with military and congressional leaders during the attack.

Among the guests giving Pence a standing ovation as he received the silver lantern-shaped award were David Letterman, Governor Maura Healey, Senator Ed Markey, former governor Charlie Baker, Senator Christopher Dodd, Marc Short, Pence's former chief of staff, and Greg Jacob, Pence's former general counsel.
The award was presented to Pence by Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of John F. Kennedy and honorary president of the library, and her son Jack Schlossberg, a member of the Profile in Courage Award Committee.
Schlossberg said the award does not celebrate victory or success.
'Instead, the winner often has to lose something first,' Schlossberg said.
The attack on the Capitol 'was an attempted coup, a failed insurrection that nearly succeeded and might have, if not for Mike Pence, who saved America that day,' Schlossberg said.
Kennedy commended Pence's leadership as a lesson to Americans in Trump's first hundred days that 'we can no longer take our democracy for granted.'
She added that she first thought Pence's certification of the election was just the vice president 'doing his job.'
'Only later did I realize that his act of courage saved our government and warned us about what could happen, and is happening right now,' Kennedy said.
When Pence reflected on Jan. 6, he said, 'the only heroes I saw were wearing uniforms.'
'Jan. 6 was a tragic day, but it became a triumph of freedom,' Pence said. 'History will record that our institutions held. When, after law enforcement secured the Capitol, leaders in both chambers, in both political parties, reconvened the very same day, and finished democracy's work under the Constitution.'

Pence also acknowledged his break from the Republican Party on some issues, including his support for Ukraine.
'I also have differences with members of my own party on spending, tariffs, and my belief that America is the leader of the free world and must continue to stand with Ukraine until the Russian invasion is repelled and a just and lasting peace is secure,' Pence said to a standing ovation.
Pence repeatedly highlighted working Americans, including his supporters in Indiana.
'I have faith in the countless Americans who make this country work every day, and so should you,' Pence said. 'People who get up every morning, put in an honest day's work, look after their families, do the right thing when nobody's watching and never get a chance for a night like this.'
The award is presented annually by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation to a public servant who, in the view of a bipartisan committee of politicians and other public figures, has made a 'courageous decision of conscience, without regard for the personal or professional consequences,' the library
The award was created in 1989 to 'honor President Kennedy's commitment and contribution to public service,' and was named after Kennedy's 1957 Pulitzer Prize-winning book, 'Profiles in Courage,' according to the library foundation.
Former recipients include three US presidents, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and former US House speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Pence credited the former president with inspiring the start of his political career.
'It was President Kennedy's eloquence and example that first inspired me to believe that public service was a noble calling, so to be here tonight bearing witness to a journey that President Kennedy helped inspire in my small life is more meaningful than I can possibly express,' Pence said.

Bad actors in LA protests a 'good thing' for Trump's immigration agenda: Chuck Rocha
Protests in Los Angeles and other cities continue as citizens protest ICE raids taking place in their communities. Democratic strategist Chuck Rocha encourages Americans to protest if they have disagreements with the government but cautions against bad actors who cause destruction and violence, saying, "Those are the imagery Donald Trump wants to see … because it's a good thing for him." Rocha talks about how President Trump campaigned on immigration, which he says is a key reason Trump was reelected. Rocha believes Democrats have a hard time sticking to core values and need to return to those if they want to win elections. #DonaldTrump #LosAngeles #ICEprotests

What to know about ‘No Kings' protests against Trump's policies on Saturday
Why is it called No Kings? The 'No Kings' theme was orchestrated by the 50501 Movement, a national movement made up of everyday Americans who stand for democracy and against what they call the authoritarian actions of the Trump administration. The name 50501 stands for 50 states, 50 protests, one movement. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Protests earlier this year have denounced Trump and billionaire adviser Elon Musk, the now former leader of Trump's Department of Government Efficiency, a government organization designed to slash federal spending. Protesters have called for Trump to be 'dethroned' as they compare his actions to that of a king and not a democratically elected president. Advertisement 'They've defied our courts, deported Americans, disappeared people off the streets, attacked our civil rights, and slashed our services,' the group says on its website, referring to the Trump administration and its policies. 'They've done this all while continuing to serve and enrich their billionaire allies.' Why are they protesting on Saturday? The No Kings Day of Defiance has been organized to reject authoritarianism, billionaire-first politics and the militarization of the country's democracy, according to a press release from No Kings. Advertisement It is happening to counter the Army's 250th anniversary celebration — which Trump has ratcheted up to include an expensive, lavish military parade. The event, will feature 'The flag doesn't belong to President Trump. It belongs to us,' the No Kings website says. 'On June 14th, we're showing up everywhere he isn't — to say no thrones, no crowns, no kings.' Where are the protests? Protests in nearly 2,000 locations are scheduled around the country, from city blocks to small towns, from courthouse steps to community parks, according to the No Kings website. No protests are scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C., however, where the parade will be held. The group says it will 'make action everywhere else the story of America that day.' No Kings plans instead to hold a major flagship march and rally in Philadelphia to draw a clear contrast between its people-powered movement and what they describe as the 'costly, wasteful, and un-American birthday parade' in Washington, according to the No Kings website. What is planned at the No Kings protests? People of all ages are expected to come together in the protest locations for speeches, marching, carrying signs and waving American flags, organizers said in a call Wednesday. On the group's website it says a core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action, and participants are expected to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with them. Weapons of any kind should not be brought to events, according to the website. Advertisement How many people are expected to participate? The No Kings Day of Defiance is expected to be the largest single-day mobilization since Trump returned to office, organizers said. Organizers said they are preparing for millions of people to take to the streets across all 50 states and commonwealths.

Rep. Luna: China is dangerous, behind funding of protests
(NewsNation) — Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a Republican, announced the House Oversight committee will be calling China-based billionaire Neville Singham to testify regarding the funding of a group that organized protests in Los Angeles. 'If he refuses to appear, he will be subpoenaed, and if he ignores that, he will be referred to the DOJ for prosecution,' Luna said in a post on social platform X. She alleged that the Party for Socialism and Liberation, a Communist political party to which Singham has previously donated, is also receiving funding from the Chinese Communist Party. The committee will be looking into links between Singham and the CCP, as well. Luna joined NewsNation's 'CUOMO' on Wednesday to discuss the investigation. She said she believes Singham and the CCP are purposely trying to create division within the United States. Hogg forgoes reelection for DNC vice chair 'I do believe the Chinese government knows what they're doing; they're smart and they're dangerous,' Luna said. She added that she believes they are creating a ruse with the protests and making Hispanic-Americans think the unrest going on is all about the recent ICE raids. Luna said during the Biden administration, then-Sen. Marco Rubio and Sen. Lindsey Graham asked then-U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate Singham over Foreign Agents Registration Act violations and ties to China, but the administration did not follow up. 'It's not just me, but the entire Oversight committee in Congress,' Luna said. 'This is a different administration. We are not playing games. What you are seeing in real time is things are heating up. China is not our friend.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
