Scottish town known for its iconic fabric patterns named among UK's most underrated gems
The town ranks ninth in the UK for its rich culture, eight indie shops, 62 music events, and strong landmark ratings despite fewer top-rated restaurants
Scotland is home to some of the most overlooked towns in the UK, with Paisley leading the pack as the most underrated location outside of England, according to new research.
The research by Betway looked at over 50 towns across the UK, analysing factors like independent shops, cultural landmarks, top-rated restaurants, music events, TikTok popularity and even average summer temperatures.
Paisley, just 15 minutes from Glasgow, took the top Scottish spot and ranked ninth overall in the UK. It stood out for its mix of history and culture, with eight independent shops, 62 music events, and 63,600 TikTok posts.
While only 39 percent of its restaurants are rated four stars or more, it boasts 71 percent of landmarks with top ratings and an average summer temperature of 14C.
'Paisley, which also ranks as the ninth most underrated town overall, comes in first as the most underrated outside of England,' said Betway.
'With plenty of cultural sites to explore, from the 850-year-old Abbey to many mills, it's the ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of Glasgow.'
Dumfries came in second among Scottish towns, praised for its blend of natural beauty and historic architecture.
It scored highly for restaurant quality, with 65 percent rated four stars or above, and hosts 34 music events. The town also racked up 29,500 TikTok posts and has a slightly warmer summer average of 14.7C.
'Despite its modest size, Dumfries packs a cultural punch,' Betway said, adding it offers 'plenty to keep visitors entertained well into the evening.'
Ayr ranked third, offering a balance of leisure and heritage, including landmarks such as Robert Burns' birthplace.
It has 73 percent of landmarks rated highly, a solid 60 percent of restaurants with top reviews, and 32,800 TikTok posts, though only 10 music events. Summer temperatures average 14.3C.
St Andrews, in fourth place, drew attention for its strong food scene, 78 percent of its restaurants score four stars or more.

It's known globally as the town where Prince William met Kate Middleton, and remains a major tourist draw despite just four music events. The university town recorded 31,000 TikTok posts and a 14C summer average.
'St Andrews… continues to draw visitors from around the world eager to catch a glimpse of royal history,' Betway added.
Outside of Scotland, Ruthin in Wales rounded out the UK top five, with scenic views over the Vale of Clwyd but just 970 TikTok posts.

Sabrina Carpenter flirts with controversy (again)
Sabrina Carpenter's new album cover has rekindled one of the classic debates around pop culture and sexuality: Satire or subjugation? Empowerment or degradation? Or is the debate itself the point? The pop star, who burst into the mainstream last year, released the cover art for her upcoming album, 'Man's Best Friend,' last week. The image shows Carpenter on all fours while someone just out of frame pulls her hair. Carpenter, 26, has courted controversy for a while with her open embrace of sex and sexuality in her music and live performances. Last year, a New York City priest was disciplined after she filmed a music video at his church. Many of Carpenter's televised appearances have been met with backlash. That all paled in comparison to the debate that has erupted in recent days. 'My entire timeline is either people talking about Israel and Iran or Sabrina Carpenter with the exact same level of intensity,' one user on X quipped. Few corners of the internet have been left untouched. On Reddit, TikTok and Instagram, social media users have argued about what to make of the cover, with a range of takes including whether the cover image was a brilliant subversion of misogyny or whether it was setting women back. The conversation became so mainstream that even the hosts of 'The View' weighed in Thursday, asking whether the cover is 'sending the wrong message.' To many, the image is satire, a continuation of many of the themes of Carpenter's lyrics and music videos, which often mix humor, love, regret and a dose of resentment for the men in her life. In 'Manchild,' the first single off her new album released just ahead of the cover, Carpenter jokes about liking all her men 'incompetent.' Others have called the image anti-feminist, saying it plays into misogynistic gender roles in which women must be subservient to men. Some online said the image was reminiscent of domestic abuse, while others simply called it degrading for a woman to be on all fours having her hair pulled. Still others said that Carpenter risked playing into the male gaze even if she was attempting to subvert it. One video on TikTok with more than 2.4 million views took the conversation even deeper — and more critical. 'I feel like this Sabrina Carpenter album cover, people are like 'She's the exception. Can't a girl be sexy? Can't a girl just like sex?' Sure. Sure, she can,' Megan Cruz, a culture commentator, said in the video. 'But I'm not going to ignore the entire historical precedence that has gotten us here to this moment … we have come to accept such spineless, f------ nothing art.' Despite the online debate over the album cover, 'Manchild' debuted at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100, a first for Carpenter. While Carpenter herself has not weighed in on the discussions around the image, she recently told Rolling Stone that she can't remember a time when women were dissected so seriously. 'I don't want to be pessimistic, but I truly feel like I've never lived in a time where women have been picked apart more, and scrutinized in every capacity. I'm not just talking about me. I'm talking about every female artist that is making art right now,' she said. For about as long as pop music has existed, arguments about its deleterious effects have raged, and the scrutiny hasn't been entirely confined to female artists. Elvis Presley's hip sways in the 1950's — beamed into homes through the then-new technology of television — generated moral outrage. By the 1980s, Madonna was on her way to becoming a lightning rod for controversy, launching heated debates on everything from misogyny and sexuality to religious panic that set a new standard for how a pop star could drive intense and important societal discussions. More recently, Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera have been criticized for veering away from their 'good girl' image. 'Musical performers in the U.S. in particular have long courted controversy, and people have been critiquing the music, music industry and sexualization of women for decades,' said Brooke Erin Duffy, an associate professor in the department of communication at Cornell University. The criticism of Carpenter follows a similar pattern to what pop stars who came before her faced, and reflects a cultural swing back to more conservative ideals. 'I mean, come on, look at social media,' said Patrick Johnson, an assistant professor of journalism and media studies at Marquette University. 'You've got the trad wives that are everywhere. You've got the 'Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.' Like, you've got this really interesting return, much like you saw in the mid-90s, much like you saw post=Woodstock, much like you saw post mid-50s, much like you saw post roaring-20s.' Representatives for Carpenter did not respond to a request for comment. Perry B. Johnson, adjunct faculty at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication, said that the question of what is appropriate is sometimes more harshly applied to women who were child stars, particularly those who came from children's television networks like the Disney Channel, where Carpenter starred in 'Girl Meets World.' 'There is a desire to separate oneself from that, like, super family-friendly framing,' said Johnson, who specializes in music and culture. 'It's sort of a natural progression of anyone's maturation, but also because of the way that the industry likes to confine people into particular versions of themselves, or at least personas of themselves.' Carpenter's music has long been sexually charged. At her concerts, during the song 'Juno' she hands out a pair of fluffy handcuffs, and later sings 'Want to try out some freaky position? Have you ever tried this one?' while miming a sex act. During her song 'Bed Chem,' she goes behind a curtain and mimes a sex act with a dancer while in silhouette. Older songs like 'Nonsense' from 'emails i can't unsend' also heavily play with ideas of sex and sexuality. In her Rolling Stone interview, Carpenter said that people might expect more support for women from other women, but that has not been her experience. She also said that her most popular work is usually when she's singing about her sex life. 'It's always so funny to me when people complain,' Carpenter said. 'They're like, 'All she does is sing about this.' But those are the songs that you've made popular. Clearly you love sex. You're obsessed with it.'

Huge Robert twist in Emmerdale as John's true nature is exposed
Tonight's episode of Emmerdale focused on just four characters: Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley), John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth), Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) and Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller). Recently in the soap, Aaron received a letter from Robert requesting a visit. The beloved character returned to the Dales a couple of weeks ago, but was sent back to prison as a result of breaking the rules of his bail conditions. Aaron wasn't going to see Robert, but changed his mind when Vic said he was in a bad way after being attacked. Unfortunately, the appointment was discovered by John, who then grew quietly angry when Aaron outright lied to him about where he'd be going. As Aaron left, John told Vic that he knows he's going to see Robert. While Vic tried to reassure a paranoid John at the flat, Aaron had sat down ready to see his ex. Robert attempted to get under Aaron's skin by reminding him of times they spent with Liv, and how missed she is. He really tried, but Aaron wasn't budging – he told Robert again that he's moved on, and wants to be with John. Aaron told his ex that if he loves him, he'll allow him to carry on with his life and leave him alone. It hurt his heart, but Robert agreed, and Aaron left. In the afternoon, as Aaron returned, John headed out, making his way to the prison to see Robert. This conversation between the two Sugdens was entirely different. Robert called John the 'unwanted rut' and said that he's trying to 'take his life'. He was clever with his words and wound John up so much, he said that Robert has no idea what he's capable of. John told Robert that he could 'take his life', but the definition of the phrase was, of course, completely different. By this point, John was raging. He was sat in his chair practically shaking with negative emotion, and Robert was watching this odd behaviour with deep concern. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Robert concluded that he's not going to let Aaron start again with John, because his distant brother is incredibly odd. As time ran out, Robert smugly told John that they'd see each other again soon. More Trending Robert will be released again in a couple of days time and immediately heads back to the village. When he arrives, he tells Aaron, John and Vic that he's sticking around and wants to reconnect with his family. This character is now standing in the way of John and his happy life with Aaron. Kat chilled to the bone in EastEnders as she makes discovery about Tommy
Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) has made a chilling discovery about son Tommy (Sonny Kendall) in EastEnders. As viewers of the BBC One soap have seen, the youngster has become entwined in a dangerous friendship with newcomer Joel Marshall (Max Murray). He'd arrived from Australia earlier in the year alongside dad Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) and Ross' partner Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig), bringing with them a tonne of baggage. And not in the literal sense! It soon transpired that Joel had upskirted a pupil in his class, and her family had ordered him to leave the country in exchange for their silence. They'd also accepted a hefty $50,000 sum. The teen showed no signs of changing – recording himself sleeping with Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James), and introducing Tommy to pornography. More recently, Joel showed his new mate videos from an influencer, who spoke about women in a derogatory manner. Tommy was clearly spooked by the words, and with Kat and Alfie uncovering sexually explicit videos on the family laptop, he knew that it was time to refrain from hanging around with Joel. In yesterday's episode, he purposely skipped school so that they wouldn't have to bump into one another. Feigning an illness, he was stunned to see Joel arrive under the pretence of being his study partner. Kat went out to work, and the lads soon began watching dodgy videos again. Joel then branded his mum a 'slapper', and said he'd always been made to feel unwanted, especially Down Under where his new schoolmates had mocked his British accent. Tommy told him that not everyone was like that – prompting Joel to want to explore more of London. However, when the lads were on the tube home, he exacted yet another sex offence on a fellow passenger. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? In tonight's instalment, Tommy rushed home and didn't want to open up to Kat about what had happened. She encouraged him to open up, but after making a disparaging comment about a woman's place being in the kitchen, she began to wonder if something more sinister was at play. More Trending When she asked about Joel, Tommy stayed silent. It became obvious by his silence that her worst fears had been confirmed. However, when she reached out to husband Alfie (Shane Richie) for help, he was nowhere to be found. Tommy used a tracker on his dad's phone to find him, and Kat raced over. What she didn't realise was that inside the flat she was her estranged daughter Zoe (Michelle Ryan)! View More » EastEnders continues tomorrow at 7.30pm on BBC One.
