Boy sends letter to Goose Creek mayor asking for chess board at Central Creek Park
GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCBD) – A youngster in Goose Creek recently made a special request of the city's mayor – add a chessboard at Central Creek Park. The park has EV charging stations for electric vehicles, basketball hoops, a splashpad, and even pickleball. 'We tried to program for every age, and we just had it pointed out to us by a young citizen that we had left some stuff out,' said Goose Creek Mayor Greg Habib. The child citizen, named John, sent a letter to Mayor Habib asking for a chess table in the park. 'I asked the mayor if he could put a chess table in Central Creek Park, and I told the mayor how much I enjoy chess,' said John, who is also in Boy Scout Troop 777. 'Johnny was working on his citizenship in the National Merit badge. One of the requirements is to write a letter to a local politician advocating for something. So, he brainstormed a little bit about, you know, who we wanted to write to and what he wanted to talk about, and that he came up with asking for a chess table at the park,' said John Plotke, one of the leaders in the Boy Scout troop. 'And it seemed simple enough, and I didn't know if we'd get a response or if we'd get, you know, any action at all, but it was less than 30 days. And he had a letter back from the mayor saying that he loved the idea, and he'd already started ordering tables.' The two sat down to play a game of chess Tuesday on the new tables. 'I'm all right at pickleball, but smarter people than me punch up,' said Mayor Habib after the match. Competitors and athletes, and thinkers are so grateful for this park because they see it gets everyone together, face to face, and off the screens for friend-making and fun. Man sentenced to life in prison for murder of North Charleston motel owner
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A man with a history of violent crimes was sentenced to life in prison without parole Tuesday for murdering a North Charleston motel owner in 2022. Honorable Roger Young handed down to the sentence to Darnell Dwayne Brown after he was convicted of murdering Jagdishbhai Patel on June 25, 2022. At the time of the execution, Brown had been in the custody of the SC Department of Corrections four months earlier after serving time for two armed robberies. 'Mr. Patel brought his family to the United States to pursue the American dream of becoming a citizen and owning a small business. He did both by the book, only to be executed by a home-grown murderer,' Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said. Patel was murdered at his business, the Charleston Heights Motel, according to the solicitor's office. Evidence presented in court revealed surveillance from a nearby residence showed the killer wearing the same clothes as Brown was shown wearing a short time afterward. Brown was also found less than two-tenths of a mile away from the crime scene with a backpack, motel registration, key card, and gloves that tested positive for gunshot residue. Authorities found Brown about 50 yards from a .38 special revolver that housed fired casings. Investigators matched a fired bulled to the revolver found next to Brown. The solicitor's office also said Brown made incriminating statements to North Charleston detectives. 'We are grateful to the Patel family for their sincere and incredible strength in the face of this unnecessary violence,' said Assistant Solicitor Lemuel Zeigler. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Panel to reflect on 10-years since trageic shooting at Mother Emanuel in Charleston
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – One week from today will mark 10 years since an event that changed the Lowcountry forever, the tragic June 17, 2015, shooting at Mother Emanuel in downtown Charleston. A gunman, motivated by white supremacist views, shot and killed nine people during Bible study at the historically Black church, leaving a lasting impact not only on the survivors but the greater Charleston community. As the 10-year mark approaches, people across the area are reflecting on how the Lowcountry came together in the aftermath of that event and refused to let love be drowned out by hate. Elected officials and community leaders will host a forum Tuesday night to explore the progress that Charleston has made in the 10 years since the attack and what work still needs to be done. That event will get underway at the Charleston Music Hall at 7 p.m. and will feature a panel discussion with leaders in law enforcement, community advocates, and lawmakers. News 2's Carolyn Murray will moderate the panel. There will also be a special performance by Grammy Award-winning musician Charlton Singleton. The event is free; however, registration is required.
