‘Everything is possible' — Ronaldo focused on titles, not 1,000-goal milestone after Riyadh Derby win
RIYADH — After leading Al Nassr to a statement 3-1 victory over Al Hilal in the Riyadh Derby, Cristiano Ronaldo was quick to shift the spotlight from personal achievements to team success, reiterating his focus on titles rather than the looming 1,000-goal milestone.
The 40-year-old superstar scored twice — a clinical left-footed strike and a composed late penalty — to reach 21 goals in the 2024-25 Roshn Saudi League, consolidating his lead in the Golden Boot race and moving his career total to 931 goals. His brace also marked his first goals in the RSL against Al Hilal, helping Al Nassr earn their first league win over their capital rivals in seven encounters.
Despite the historic performance, Ronaldo preferred to relish the moment with his teammates rather than speculate on the possibility of reaching four figures in career goals.
'Guys, let's enjoy the moment, the present,' Ronaldo said post-match. 'I'm not following 1,000 [goals]. If it's yes, perfect. If it's not, it's not. The moment is the most special thing, not what is going to come, you know?'
'I enjoy the moment. It was a great win, not because I scored — of course, I'm happy to score two goals against Al Hilal — but the most important thing is to win the derby.'
Ronaldo acknowledged the quality of Al Hilal, calling them a 'fantastic team,' and praised Al Nassr's performance under pressure away from home.
'We have to appreciate [the win] and we have to continue, because nine games are left and one more in the [AFC] Champions League. Everything is possible. We have to continue and believe.'
Ronaldo's brace keeps him four goals clear at the top of the RSL scoring charts, ahead of Abderrazak Hamdallah (Al Shabab) and Marcos Leonardo (Al Hilal), with Karim Benzema (Al Ittihad) and Ivan Toney (Al Ahli) trailing closely.
Al Nassr's derby win sees them remain third in the table on 54 points, now just one point behind Al Hilal and seven off leaders Al Ittihad, injecting new life into a three-way title race as the league enters its final stretch.
With a crucial AFC Champions League Elite quarter-final in Jeddah later this month, the timing of the victory could prove pivotal for momentum.
Still, Ronaldo remains cautious.
'To be honest, I don't know because football sometimes is crazy,' he said. 'But we have to do our job, we have to carry on, believe. Because, as I said before: in football, everything is possible.'
'I hope this victory gives a lot of confidence to the team because we need it for the next games and the Champions League as well. And enjoy the moment.' — SG

Cristiano Ronaldo Is Almost Certain He Won't Play at Club World Cup
Cristiano Ronaldo says he's almost certain he will not be playing at the Club World Cup, dealing a blow to FIFA president Gianni Infantino's hopes of having one of soccer's biggest attractions at the tournament. The Portugal captain confirmed Saturday that he received 'quite a few' offers from participating clubs to play for them at the tournament starting June 14, but had decided against accepting any of them. 'Some things make sense to talk about, other things don't, and, as a person says, you can't take part in everything,' Ronaldo said. 'You have to think about the short, medium and long term. It's a decision practically made on my part not to go to the Club World Cup, but I've had quite a few invitations to go.' The 40-year-old soccer legend was speaking in Munich a day before Portugal's Nations League final against Spain. Infantino had suggested last month that Ronaldo, who is still contracted to Saudi team Al-Nassr until the end of June, could switch to one of the 32 clubs taking part in the Club World Cup because of a unique transfer window created for the tournament. Ronaldo did little to quell that speculation when he posted 'this chapter is over' after Al-Nassr's last Saudi Pro League game of the season. He was linked with several Club World Cup participants, including Brazil's Palmeiras. A switch to Al-Nassr's crosstown rival Al-Hilal – the one Saudi club that qualified – was also mooted as a potential solution to having Ronaldo play at the tournament, where his great rival Lionel Messi will be playing with Inter Miami. FIFA would have welcomed the boost that Ronaldo's presence could provide for ticket sales, though such a switch to a bitter local rival for a short period would be unthinkable for players in Europe's leagues. Ronaldo fired Portugal into the Nations League final on Wednesday with a 2-1 win over host nation Germany. His winning goal was his record-extending 137th for Portugal. If he plays Sunday, he will make his record-extending 221st national team appearance.

Spain-Portugal final more than just Cristiano vs Yamal says Ronaldo
MUNICH: Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo acknowledged he was 'another generation' to Spain starlet Lamine Yamal but said Sunday's Nations League final was more than just a battle between the duo. The final in Munich has been framed as a showdown between veteran Ronaldo, 40, one of the game's biggest names, and 17-year-old Yamal, the most exciting young talent in world football. Ronaldo scored the winner to send Portugal past Germany into the final and Yamal was named man-of-the-match after bagging a brace in Spain's wild 5-4 semifinal win over France. Ronaldo however said the focus on the two individuals was overblown, calling Spain 'maybe the best national team in the world.' 'There are different generations, one is coming in and another is exiting the stage. If you want to see me as another generation, then that's OK. 'When you talk about a clash between Cristiano and someone else, that's not how it works. The media always try to hype things up, which is a normal thing, but it's one team versus another team.' 'You've been talking about Lamine a lot and you're right to do so because he's very good,' Ronaldo told journalists, adding 'but I'd like to talk about the team. 'They've got Nico Williams, great midfielders like Pedri and their coach (Luis) de la Fuente is very good, very strong, very disciplined.' Portugal last beat their Iberian neighbors in a competitive fixture in 21 years ago at Euro 2024, a match which Ronaldo started. Like Yamal, Ronaldo burst onto the scene at a young age. Aged just 18, Ronaldo impressed so much for boyhood side Sporting in a 3-1 win over Manchester United in a friendly in Lisbon that the English club decided to buy him, bringing him to Old Trafford less than a week later. Like a young Ronaldo, Yamal has consistently impressed since bursting onto the scene, winning a league and cup double with Barcelona this season after lifting the Euro 2024 title in Germany last summer. The Portuguese veteran asked media to allow the teenager to grow and improve without pressure, reminding them the Spanish star 'with funny hair' was just 'three years older than my son.' 'The kid has been doing very well, but what I ask is for you to let him grow, not put him under pressure. For the good of football, we need to let him grow in his own way and enjoy the talent he has.' Both Spain and Portugal have already won the Nations League. Spain are the current champions from their win in 2023, while Portugal won the inaugural tournament back in 2019.

Ronaldo says he does not plan to play at Club World Cup in US
Al Nassr and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo said on Saturday he did not plan to play at the Club World Cup in the United States, despite being courted by clubs participating in the expanded 32-team tournament. Speculation over the 40-year-old's future intensified last month when FIFA President Gianni Infantino said discussions were underway about Ronaldo playing in the Club World Cup, despite Al Nassr failing to qualify. Al Nassr's sporting director Fernando Hierro said last month they were negotiating with Ronaldo over a contract extension but faced competition from a host of clubs eager to sign the five-times Ballon d'Or winner. Ronaldo himself added to the uncertainty after Al Nassr's season-ending match at Al-Fateh, posting on social media: 'This chapter is over. The story? Still being written.' Asked about the possibility of signing for another club in the coming days in order to play at the Club World Cup later this month, Ronaldo told reporters: 'It's irrelevant, at the moment it doesn't make sense to talk about things other than the national team. 'There has been plenty of contact (from clubs), I see things that make sense, others that don't. You can't go to all of them (clubs), you have to think short, medium and long term. 'It's something that's practically decided on my part, which is not to go to the Club World Cup, but I've had plenty of invitations.' On Wednesday, Ronaldo scored the winner as Portugal beat Germany 2-1 to go into the Nations League final, where they will face Spain. Many have labelled Sunday's final as a face-off between Ronaldo and 17-year-old Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal but the Portuguese forward said he did not see it as such. 'It's always been like that, whenever I've played football, whenever I've played a big game it's always been Cristiano against this one, against that one,' he said. 'It's been 20-something years and it's still the same, it doesn't keep me up at night anymore, it's a normal thing. They're completely different generations, a generation that's starting out, another that's finishing, which is my case.' 'In reality it's not like that, it's a team against a team. It will always be like that... What I want most is for Portugal to be at a good level, confident that things can go well, that we can play a great game and win against a very good team, possibly the best in the world.'
