Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine kills 15, injures 116
KYIV, Ukraine, June 17, (AP): A nighttime Russian missile and drone barrage on Ukraine killed at least 15 people and injured 116 others while they slept in their homes, local officials said Tuesday, with the main barrage centering on the capital Kyiv. Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko said 14 people were killed and 99 others were injured in the city as explosions echoed across the city for hours during the night.
The bombardment demolished a nine-story residential building, destroying dozens of apartments. Emergency workers were at the scene to rescue people from under the rubble. It was one of the deadliest attacks on the Ukrainian capital in recent months and came as two rounds of direct peace talks have failed to make progress on ending the war, now in its fourth year.
Also, Russian drone strikes in the southern port city of Odesa killed one person and injured 17 people, according to Oleh Kiper, head of the regional administration. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attack "one of the most terrifying strikes on Kyiv' and said Russian forces fired more than 440 drones and 32 missiles at Ukraine overnight.
Russian President Vladimir Putin "is doing this simply because he can afford to continue the war. He wants the war to go on. It is troubling when the powerful of this world turn a blind eye to it,' Zelenskyy wrote. The Kyiv City Military Administration said in a statement Tuesday that "the nature of the damage is direct hits on residential buildings.
Rockets - from the upper floors to the basement.' The attack lasted nearly nine hours and is the latest in a spate of mass drone and missile attacks on Kyiv. It occurred as world leaders convened at the Group of Seven meeting in Canada, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to attend. The summit runs through Tuesday. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko told reporters at the scene that a US citizen was killed in the attack after suffering wounds from shrapnel. Explosions could be heard for hours throughout the night on Tuesday.
Thirty apartments were destroyed in a single residential block after it was struck by a ballistic missile, Klymenko said. "We have 27 locations that were attacked by the enemy. We currently have over 2,000 people working there, rescuers, police, municipal services and doctors,' he told reporters at the scene of one of the attacks.

Top official in Pyongyang again to meet N.Korean leader: Russian media
S SEOUL, South Korea, June 17, (AP): A top Russian security official traveled to Pyongyang for the second time this month for another meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Russian state media reported Tuesday, the latest display of the countries' deepening ties amid President Vladimir Putin's war against Ukraine. Russia's Tass news agency said Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu arrived in the North Korean capital on an unspecified "special' mission from Putin and was expected to meet with Kim. North Korean state media didn't immediately confirm the visit. Kim has supplied Russia with thousands of troops and large shipments of military equipment, including artillery and ballistic missiles, to support its military operation in Ukraine. Washington and Seoul have expressed concern that, in return, Kim may seek Russian technology transfers that could enhance the threat posed by his nuclear-armed military. In April, Pyongyang and Moscow officially confirmed North Korean troops' deployment to Russia for the first time, saying that soldiers of the two countries were fighting alongside each other to repel a Ukrainian incursion into Russia's Kursk border region. Putin then thanked North Korea's participation in the war and promised not to forget their sacrifices. In their previous meeting on June 4, Kim told Shoigu that his government would "unconditionally support' Russia over the war in Ukraine and other critical international issues as they discussed strengthening the strategic partnership between their countries, according to North Korean state media.

Death toll from attack by gunmen in north-central Nigeria reaches 150: survivors
DAKAR, Senegal, June 17, (AP): The death toll from an attack by gunmen over the weekend in north-central Nigeria has climbed to 150, survivors said Monday as the villagers were still digging through burned homes, counting their dead and looking for dozens of people still missing. Assailants stormed Benue state's Yelewata community late on Friday night, opening fire on villagers who were asleep and setting their homes ablaze, survivors and the local farmers union said. Many of those killed were sheltering in a local market after fleeing violence in other parts of the state. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the killings, but such attacks are common in Nigeria's northern region where local herders and farmers often clash over limited access to land and water. The prolonged conflict has become deadlier in recent years, with authorities and analysts warning that more herdsmen are taking up arms. The farmers accuse the herders, mostly of Fulani origin, of grazing their livestock on their farms and destroying their produce. The herders insist that the lands are grazing routes that were first backed by law in 1965, five years after the country gained its independence. Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu, whose government has fallen short of expectations in ending the country's deadly security crises, described the Benue attack as "senseless bloodletting' while his office said he would visit the stricken community on Wednesday. Titus Tsegba, who lost his wife and four of his children in the attack, said more than 20 bodies were recovered on Monday. The initial death toll was reported to be 100 on Saturday. His wife and children - the youngest 8 and the oldest 27 - were "burned into ashes beyond recognition,' he told The Associated Press, adding that he survived because he was sleeping in another part of the community. "Everything is gone,' he said. Benue Deputy Gov. Sam Ode said he suspected the perpetrators were herdsmen. Ode and the survivors spoke to the AP by phone.
