Katra (Jammu), June 6 (PTI) With the flagging of the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday shared eight notable features of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.
'India's 3rd longest railway tunnel T-44 stretches over 11.13 Km; between Sawalkote-Sangaldan,' he added.
Vaishnaw highlighted that the project involves the construction of 36 main tunnels with a total length of 119.6 km, along with eight escape tunnels totalling 66.4 km.
He also outlined the details of the Chenab Bridge, which is the world's highest railway arch bridge, which measures 1.3 km in length and stands at a height of 359 metres —35 metres higher than the Eiffel Tower.
The construction involved over 600 km of steel welding, exceeding the length of the railway track from Jammu to Delhi.
Vaishnaw took the opportunity to showcase the iconic Anji Bridge, which is India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. 725.5 metres in length, the bridge is balanced on the axis of a single central pylon and the height of a single pylon is 193 m from the top of the foundation.
Remarkably, all 96 stay cables were installed within just 11 months, with a total length of 653 km— more than the distance from Jammu to Delhi.
'Advanced construction technique was specifically adapted to the complex geological and seismic conditions of the Himalayan region – Himalayan Tunneling Method,' his post read.

In its journey to Sangalda, the train goes through breathtaking lush green hills, stretches of pine forest, and a series of tunnels—almost one every half a kilometre—cut through rugged terrain. According to Northern Railway spokesperson Dilip Kumar, the train has been designed using advanced technology to operate in J&K's tough topographic and climatic conditions. 'The train has been equipped with such technology that it will warm up to provide comfort to the passengers during intense winters the region witnesses,' Kumar told ThePrint. The most challenging part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project was constructing the Chenab rail bridge—made of steel and concrete. It was a difficult task as the region falls in a high-risk seismic zone and witnesses frequent spells of gusty winds. After several trial runs, the train was finally launched on 6 June. All trains operating on this route will be escorted by commandos. Keeping in mind the safety of passengers, these trains will be run only during the day. No train will operate at night. As per Railway officials, this will be the first time that CORAS will be deployed in a train. Entry After Security Check Enhanced security measures are in place for the Vande Bharat Express train travelling to Kashmir. This includes heightened security for the train itself, as well as the tunnels, Chenab Bridge, and Anji Bridge along its route. Passengers and their luggage will undergo security checks and scans before boarding at Platform 1 in Katra. Valid identification is required, and luggage will be X-rayed. Boarding will only be permitted after the completion of these security procedures.

What makes these trains special is that they are built to handle extreme winter weather. They come with heaters, insulated toilets, heated windshields, and defrosting features to help the driver see clearly even in snow and fog. Coaches include a heating system for sub-zero conditions in Srinagar, 360-degree rotating seats and charging points for passenger comfort The first train no 26401 commenced from Katra at 8:10 am and reached Srinagar at 11:08 am. The same train will return in the afternoon from Srinagar at 2:00 PM and reach Karta at 4:58 PM. This train service will not be available on Tuesday. Another train no 26403 will start from Katra at 2:55 PM and will reach Srinagar at 5:53. The same train will return from Srinagar the next day at 8 am. This service will not operate on Wednesday. The train has two classes Chair Car (CC) and Executive Class (EC). The price of a chair car ticket is Rs 715 and the price of an executive class ticket is Rs 1320. On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the first run of the Vande Bharat Express trains between Srinagar and Katra. This comes after the successful completion of the 272-kilometer Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail line, a major engineering achievement that includes the world-famous Chenab Bridge, the highest railway arch bridge in the world. Until now, trains only operated on two separate routes: Banihal to Baramulla in the Kashmir Valley and Jammu to Udhampur to Katra in the Jammu region. With this new rail link, the Valley is now fully connected by train to the rest of India. The launch of the Vande Bharat Express is expected to be a game-changer.
