Sembcorp unit wins solar energy project to supply power in India

Business Times29-05-2025

[SINGAPORE] Sembcorp Industries' wholly owned renewables subsidiary, Sembcorp Green Infra, was awarded a build-own-operate solar energy storage hybrid project by SJVN, an Indian state-owned power company.
Sembcorp Green Infra will supply solar power and support peak electricity demand for four hours a day through a 300 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system (Bess) once the project is complete, the group said on Thursday (May 29).
This is subject to the execution of a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with SJVN.
Commercial operations for the project are expected to start within 24 months from the date the PPA is signed, the group noted.
The project has a contracted capacity of 150 megawatts (MW) and is part of SJVN's 1.2 gigawatt (GW) tender for the Inter State Transmission system-connected solar projects with 600 MW/2.4 GWh of Bess capacity.
It will be funded through a blend of internal funds and debt, Sembcorp said.

The award of the project is not expected to have a material impact on the group's earnings per share and net tangible assets per share for the financial year ending December 2025, it added.
As Sembcorp's second solar energy storage hybrid project in India, the project raises the group's gross renewables capacity in the country to 6.3 GW.
It comes on the back of the group's first solar and Bess hybrid project in India, involving a 150 MW solar photovoltaic project with a 300 MWh Bess, announced in December 2024.
Then, Sembcorp Green Infra was awarded a build-own-operate project by Indian public sector company, Solar Energy Corporation of India, to supply on-demand power to support four hours of peak electricity daily over a 25-year period.
The counter ended on Wednesday 1 per cent or S$0.07 lower at S$6.64.

India vows to keep up development in Kashmir after tourist attack

FILE PHOTO: Chairs and tables are scattered at the site of a suspected militant attack on tourists in Baisaran near Pahalgam in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, April 24, 2025. REUTERS/Adnan Abidi/File Photo India vows to keep up development in Kashmir after tourist attack NEW DELHI - India is committed to efforts to develop its restive territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday, accusing neighbour Pakistan of seeking to destroy livelihoods there with April's deadly attack on tourists. He was speaking on his first visit to the Himalayan region since Islamist attackers targeted Hindu tourists in the popular Pahalgam area, killing 26 men, triggering hostilities between the nuclear-armed neighbours that ended in ceasefire last month. "The atmosphere of development that emerged in Jammu and Kashmir will not be hindered by the attack ... I will not let development stop here," Modi said in remarks after inaugurating infrastructure projects. Key among these was a $5-billion rail link between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India, which has been more than 40 years in the making and features the world's highest railway arch bridge. Others include highways, city roads and a new medical college. India has accused Pakistan of backing the April attack, a claim denied by Islamabad, and they engaged in four days of fierce fighting last month before agreeing to a ceasefire. Pakistan aimed to disrupt the livelihoods of the poor in Kashmir, who rely heavily on tourism, Modi said, adding that he would face down any obstacle to regional development. Pakistan's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Modi's remarks. Last month, Islamabad said a just and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute was essential to ensure lasting peace in the region, known for its snow-topped mountains, scenic lakes, lush meadows, and tulip gardens. The region, which drew more than 3 million visitors last year, is at the heart of the hostility between the old foes, both of which claim it in full, but rule it in part and have fought two of their three wars over it. India also accuses Pakistan of supporting Islamist militants battling security forces in Jammu and Kashmir, but Islamabad denies the accusation. Trains run in the Kashmir Valley but the new link is its first to the wider Indian railway network. Apart from boosting the regional economy, it is expected to help revive tourism, which plummeted after the April attack. India's central bank cuts rates more than expected to boost growth

The Reserve Bank of India lowered the benchmark repo rate, the level at which it lends to commercial banks, by 50 basis points to 5.5 per cent. PHOTO: AFP MUMBAI - India's central bank cut interest rates more than expected on June 6, citing muted inflation and a need to kickstart economic growth as the impact of US tariffs weighed on the country's outlook. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) lowered the benchmark repo rate, the level at which it lends to commercial banks, by 50 basis points to 5.5 per cent. A majority of analysts had expected 25-basis-point reduction. The cut was its third in a row and comes a week after government data showed India's economy expanded at its slowest pace for four years in the fiscal year that ended in March. And while the January-March quarter showed signs of a rebound, with forecast-topping 7.4 per cent year-on-year growth, analysts said US President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs posed risks to the outlook. Easing price concerns have also allowed the RBI to concentrate on growth, with retail inflation dropping to a near six-year-low of 3.16 per cent in April. Bank governor Sanjay Malhotra said India's growth remained 'lower than our aspirations' in a 'challenging global environment' and that it was necessary to continue stimulating domestic consumption and investment. 'This changed growth inflation dynamics calls for not only continuing with the policy easing, but also frontloading the rate cuts to support growth,' Mr Malhotra said. He added that the monetary policy committee had changed its stance from 'accommodative' to 'neutral', which implies a rate cut is not guaranteed at its next review meeting. The central bank also threw in a liquidity-boosting measure by cutting the cash reserve ratio, the proportion of deposits that banks must set aside with the RBI, by 100 basis points to 3 percent. The RBI cut rates for the first time in nearly five years in February and followed up with another reduction in April. The Indian government has forecast above-average monsoon rains, which observers say should help growth, as higher agricultural output will aid the rural economy and keep vegetable prices stable. But Mr Trump's protectionist policies could add to growth pressures. While New Delhi is not a manufacturing powerhouse, experts believe that US tariffs will hurt billions of dollars of Indian exports across different sectors including gems and jewellery, electronics and seafood. India is hammering out the first tranche of a trade deal with Washington and negotiators have made several trips over the past three months. Local media reports say that while the White House is pushing for India to drop levies on a range of products, including agricultural produce and automobiles, New Delhi is seeking greater access for labour-intensive exports such as textiles and footwear. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said this week that a trade deal between the two countries could be expected in the 'not too distant future'. Apple gives Tata India iPhone repair business as partnership expands: sources

[BENGALURU] Apple has brought in Tata Group to handle repairs for iPhones and MacBook devices in its fast-growing Indian market, signalling the Indian conglomerate's deepening role in the US tech giant's supply chain, two people familiar with the matter said. As Apple looks beyond China for manufacturing, Tata has fast emerged as its key supplier and already assembles iPhones for local and foreign markets at three facilities in south India, with one of them also making some iPhone components. In its latest partnership expansion, Tata is taking over the mandate from an Indian unit of Taiwan's Wistron, ICT Service Management Solutions, and will carry out such after-sales repairs from its Karnataka iPhone assembly campus, both sources said. The market for repairs is only going to boom in India, the world's second-biggest smartphone market, as iPhone sales skyrocket. Counterpoint Research estimates around 11 million iPhones were sold in India last year, giving Apple a 7 per cent market share, compared to just 1 per cent in 2020. The latest contract award signals Apple's growing confidence on Tata as it hopes to win more business from the world's most valuable smartphone company. 'Tata's deepening partnership with Apple could also pave the groundwork for Apple directly selling refurbished devices in India, like how it does in the US currently,' said Prabhu Ram, a vice-president at Cybermedia Research. Apple and Wistron did not respond to requests for comment, while a spokesperson for Tata declined to comment. While Apple's official service centres across India can do basic repairs, they would now ship phones and laptops to Tata's facility for more complex issues. Wistron's ICT however will continue to service other clients excluding Apple, one of the sources said. Amid an impending threat of US President Donald Trump's tariffs on China, India is also emerging as a favoured destination for iPhone exports. Apple CEO Tim Cook has said the bulk of iPhones sold in the US during June quarter will be made at factories in India. REUTERS
