Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) on Thursday inaugurated the construction of 13 hybrid ferries intended to operate along the Hooghly river within the Kolkata Metropolitan Area.
Keels were laid for all 13 ferries at a ceremony attended by West Bengal Transport Minister Snehasis Chakraborty, Minister of State for Transport Dilip Mondal, Chairperson and Managing Director of GRSE Cmde. P.R. Hari, IN (Retd.), Chairperson of WBTIDCL Dr. Moinul Hassan, and other senior officials.
The vessels, being built for the West Bengal Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (WBTIDCL), are expected to replace ageing diesel ferries and support the State's broader green transport initiative.
GRSE had signed a contract with the State Transport Department on November 19, 2024, for the design and construction of these ferries.
According to a statement issued by GRSE, the ferries are designed to operate in all-weather conditions across the Hooghly stretch, from Triveni in the north to Diamond Harbour in the south. The Hooghly forms part of National Waterway-1, also known as the Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly River System.
The ferries will be equipped with hybrid electric propulsion systems, powered by both batteries and diesel generators. 'The hybrid system will offer greater flexibility to the operator to switch from one mode to the other as per requirement, allowing for greater safety. The use of batteries will reduce pollution substantially,' the company said.
The vessels will be constructed using aluminium and fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) and will feature a catamaran hull design for better stability and efficiency.
Six of the 13 ferries, with twin decks and air-conditioned main decks, are estimated to cost ₹126 crore. Each of these 30-metre-long vessels will accommodate 200 passengers and operate at a maximum speed of 12 knots, requiring a crew of five.
The remaining seven vessels, expected to cost nearly ₹100 crore, will have single decks with a 100-passenger capacity. These will be approximately 25 metres in length and 8 metres in width, with a top speed of 9 knots. Each vessel will be manned by a five-member crew.
Speaking at the ceremony, Transport Minister Snehasis Chakraborty said the new ferries would gradually replace older diesel-powered vessels. He also highlighted the operation of Dheu, one of India's largest and fastest fully electric ferries, manufactured by GRSE, currently operating between Kolkata and Belur Math.
'We are proud to spearhead the green initiatives of the Government of West Bengal, and I am confident that we shall design and deliver high-quality vessels to minimise the carbon emission in the maritime sector,' Cmde. Hari said.

A PRV is a ship which serves as a platform for research in the polar regions (areas surrounding the North and South Poles). It can also help scientists undertake research in the ocean realm. India currently operates three research base stations in the polar regions — Bharati and Maitri in Antarctica, and Himadri in the Arctic region — and had been planning to have its own PRV for a while now. In 2023, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju informed the Rajya Sabha that the country would have its first PRV within five years at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,600 crore. According to the Ministry, the MoU marks an important milestone for India's shipbuilding sector as it will receive design expertise for developing the PRV 'while taking into account the requirement of National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, which will use it for research activities in the polar and southern ocean realms'. The PRV will be equipped with the latest scientific equipment, enabling researchers to explore the oceans' depths and study marine ecosystems, Sonowal said. It will be a testament to India's critical shipbuilding capabilities, boosting the Government's 'Make In India' initiative, he added. GRSE, which has built warships, survey and research vessels, will build the PRV in its yard in Kolkata. Meanwhile, Sonowal, who is on a five-day official visit to Norway and Denmark, also represented India in a ministerial meeting on the role of shipping in shaping the future. The meeting emphasised the need for the industry to seek out a stable, long-term, regulatory environment supporting inclusive and decarbonised ocean-based trade. Oslo [Norway], June 3 (ANI): India's Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Norway's Kongsberg company to build India's first-ever indigenous Polar Research Vessel (PRV). According to a release, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), Sarbananda Sonowal, also attended the MoU signing ceremony between the two companies. The MoU was signed on the sidelines of Norshipping 2025, a maritime trade fair on June 2 in Oslo, Norway. Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal said, 'Let this MoU signing be a beacon of hope and progress, signalling India's unwavering commitment to scientific advancement and sustainable development. Together, we are building not just a vessel but a legacy of innovation, exploration, and international cooperation that will inspire generations to come.' He highlighted how the MoU will boost the 'Make in India' initiative, launched in 2014, which is meant to boost India's manufacturing sector, including increasing indigenous defence manufacturing. 'Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, this MoU is a commitment to fostering scientific discovery, advancing India's capabilities in polar and ocean research, and contributing to global efforts to address pressing challenges like climate change. GRSE, which has experience in constructing complex maritime platforms such as warships, and survey vessels, will build this PRV in its yard in Kolkata. The partnership marks an important milestone for India's shipbuilding sector. While GRSE will receive design expertise for developing the PRV, Goa-based National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research will be able to use the indigenously built vehicle for its research activities in the polar and southern ocean realms. 'The vessel will be equipped with the latest scientific equipment, enabling our researchers to explore the oceans' depths, study marine ecosystems, and unlock new insights into our planet's past, present, and future,' Sarbananda Sonowal, India's minister of ports, shipping and waterways, said in a press statement. On 28 May, earth sciences secretary M. Ravichandran told Mint that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) plans to acquire two multidisciplinary oceanographic research vessels at a cost of ₹ 1,000 crore each. The two vessels, which will be built in India. will support deep-sea scientific surveys and sampling as part of the shipping ministry's Deep Ocean Mission. The vessels will be equipped with advanced laboratories and scientific equipment, including multibeam bathymetry systems, multichannel seismics, ocean profilers, seabed samplers, onboard analytical systems, and heavy-duty deck machinery. 'Each vessel will be capable of carrying researchers up to 6 km deep into the ocean to explore both living and non-living resources. Currently, we know only about 1% of the deep ocean floor,' Ravichandran told Mint. On Tuesday, Sonowal invited Norwegian shipowners to invest in India's growing maritime sector during a roundtable with the Norwegian Shipowners' Association (NSA). 'We invite greater collaboration with Norway to build a green, smart, and resilient maritime ecosystem. Our growing partnership with Norway—reflected in Indian shipyards delivering next-gen vessels to Norwegian firms—showcases India's emergence as a trusted, future-ready hub for cost-effective and sustainable maritime solutions,' he said. Sonowal also highlighted key areas for India-Norway maritime collaboration. Pointing out that Indian shipyards hold 11% of NSA's order book, he urged for further expansion of orders, including leveraging India's ship-breaking credit note scheme.
