YSU Bowling wins first NCAA National Title
LAS VEGAS (WKBN) – Youngstown State Women's Bowling captured its first national title with a 4-3 Best-of-7 Match win against Jacksonville State in the 2025 NCAA Bowling Championships at the Suncoast Bowling Center in Las Vegas. YSU won games 1, 2, 4 and 7 in the Best-of-7 Match national title win. Jax State won games 3, 5 and 6 to force a tiebreak game 7 in the loss. Saturday morning the 'Guins beat Nebraska 2-0 in an elimination match to advance to the championship game. On Friday night, Jacksonville beat YSU, 2-1, in the second round to clinch a spot in the championship game. This loss made YSU face a double elimination match against Nebraska but advanced to reach the title game. The madness continues! YSU heads to the conference championship
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (WKBN) – The Youngstown State men's basketball is moving on to the Horizon League Conference Championship for the first time in program history, following a 56-54 win over Cleveland State in the Horizon League Tournament Semifinals at the Corteva Coliseum in Indianapolis on Monday night. The Penguins jumped out to a nine point lead at the start of the first half. But, the Vikings mounted a comeback to get the deficit down to one point at by halftime. At the end of the second half with under one minute remaining, the 'Guins were down one point until Ty Harper made a three-point shot plus the foul for a two point lead. Then, with just seconds left in regulation, YSU's Nico Galette forced a steal to seal up the victory. YSU's Siem Uijtendaal scored a team-high 13 points in the win, which all came in the second half. Also, Ty Harper scored nine and Juwan Maxey eight points in the win. The 'Guins Nico Galette scored nine points plus 12 rebounds in the win as well. Cleveland State's Tevin Smith scored a game-high 14 points in the loss. Youngstown advances to an overall record of (21-12). Cleveland State ends the season with a record of (21-12). YSU will play Robert Morris in the conference championship game. The Colonials defeated Oakland 79-76 in the other semifinal on Monday night. YSU men pick up key conference win over Oakland
ROCHESTER, MI. (WKBN) – Youngstown State men's basketball secured a key 84-75 win over Oakland in Horizon League action on Thursday night. The 'Guins keep pace with Robert Morris for the fourth seed and just a half-game behind Milwaukee and one behind Purdue Fort Wayne in a crowded Horizon League field. YSU briefly trailed 5-4 early on before taking control of the first half and maintaining a six-point lead at the break. Oakland would cut it back down to a four-point game before YSU separated in the second half with the help of EJ Farmer's game-high 25 points. Also for the Penguins, Juwan Maxey added 19 points on four three-pointers while Nico Galette scored 10 points, hauled in 12 rebounds, dished out six assists and recorded three steals. Cris Carroll also finished in double figures scoring with 10 points while Ty Harper also pitched in eight points during the victory. With the win, YSU improves to 15-10 overall and 9-5 in conference play. The 'Guins will next travel to Detroit Mercy on Saturday, Feb. 8. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
