WTA roundup: Anna Kalinskaya upsets Madison Keys in Charleston
Russia's Anna Kalinskaya came through at the crucial moments while beating second-seeded Madison Keys of the United States 6-2, 6-4 on Thursday in the third round of the Credit One Charleston (S.C.) Open. Kalinskaya took advantage of four of her five break-point opportunities, and she saved seven of Keys' eight break points. In the quarterfinals, Kalinskaya will oppose another U.S. player, Sofia Kenin, who topped fifth-seeded Daria Kasatkina of Australia 6-3, 7-6 (7). Top-seeded Jessica Pegula eased into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic. Fourth-seeded Emma Navarro won an all-U.S. matchup against 15th-seeded Ashlyn Krueger, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Also moving into the quarterfinals were third-seeded Qinwen Zheng of China, seventh-seeded Danielle Collins and eighth-seeded Amanda Anisimova, both of the United States, and ninth-seeded Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova. Copa Colsanitas Zurich Second-seeded Camila Osorio of Colombia overcame a slow start to defeat Emina Bektas of the United States 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the second round at Bogota, Colombia. Bektas, a 32-year-old who is ranked 186th in the world, had a match point at 4-5 in the second set before Osorio rallied. Osorio's quarterfinal opponent will be sixth-seeded Tatjana Maria of Germany, who downed the United States' Hanna Chang 6-0, 7-6 (0). Open. Pegula was playing her first match since falling in straight sets against Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka in the final of the Miami Open on Sunday. She had a first-round bye in Charleston. Against Shymanovich, Pegula converted all six of her break points, allowing her to overcome putting just 53 percent of her first serves in play. The only seeded players to fall on Wednesday were No. 16 Peyton Stearns, who lost 6-1, 6-4 to Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic, and No. 17 Belinda Bencic of Switzerland, who was eliminated 6-0, 6-3 by Sofia Kenin. WTA roundup: Madison Keys fights into next round in Charleston
April 2 - Despite her opponent saving seven match points, No. 2 seed Madison Keys pushed past Caroline Dolehide 6-3, 7-6 (4) in an All-American second-round battle at the Credit One Charleston (S.C.) Open on Tuesday. Dolehide saved four match points in the ninth game of the second set and two more in the 10th to force a 5-5 tie. She saved one more in the tiebreaker before Keys, the 2019 Charleston champion, put the match away. Defending champion Danielle Collins, the No. 7 seed, also advanced out of the second round and had 26 winners and five aces while beating fellow American Robin Montgomery 6-3, 6-1. One more second-round match was scheduled for the nightcap, with No. 8 seed Amanda Anisimova facing Russia's Veronika Kudermetova. In first-round results, winners included Americans Sofia Kenin, Hailey Baptiste, Louisa Chirico, Ann Li and Lauren Davis; China's Shuai Zhang; Maria Sakkari of Greece; and Iryna Shymanovich of Belarus. Copa Colsanitas Zurich No. 3 seed Alycia Parks and No. 4 Emiliana Arango were shown the door in the first round in Bogota, Colombia. WTA roundup: Katie Volynets posts double bagel in Charleston
April 1 - Katie Volynets needed less than an hour to complete a 6-0, 6-0 rout of Canadian qualifier Katherine Sebov on Monday in the first round of the Credit One Charleston (S.C.) Open. Volynets, a 23-year-old California native, put 87 percent of her first serves in play and won 81 percent of her first-serve points. She never faced a break point. Three other U.S. players earned victories on Monday. Robin Montgomery topped Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova 6-1, 6-3; Caroline Dolehide downed Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-4, 6-1; and Caty McNally rallied past Ukraine's Anhelina Kalinina 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Also advancing were Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic, France's Varvara Gracheva and Russia's Veronika Kudermetova and Polina Kudermetova.
