Mario Bautista unfazed Patchy Mix's pre-UFC 316 hype, trash talk: 'Words mean nothing'

Mario Bautista unfazed Patchy Mix's pre-UFC 316 hype, trash talk: 'Words mean nothing' Mario Bautista remained confident amid Patchy Mix's hype pre UFC 316. Show Caption Hide Caption UFC 316: Mario Bautista post-fight interview UFC 316 winner Mario Bautista spoke to MMA Junkie and reporters post-fight after his unanimous decision victory over Patchy Mix. NEWARK, N.J. – A lot was said in the lead-up to Mario Bautista's clash against former Bellator champion Patchy Mix, and most of it was not favorable for Bautista. Mix (20-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC), who debuted for the UFC this past Saturday at UFC 316 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., had tons of hype entering the fight against Bautista (16-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC), as some thought he was already the best bantamweight on the planet. Being the last Bellator bantamweight champion and having arguably the best resume outside the UFC, there were high expectations for Mix. The betting odds reflected that chatter and hype, as Bautista entered as a sizable underdog despite being the UFC veteran. Mix also had plenty to say, already angling a championship fight and saying he was "looking through" Bautista. There was a lot of noise, but Bautista kept grounded. "He was saying he was looking through me, but the whole time I was thinking, 'Well, I'm going to run through you,'" Bautista said at the uFC 316 post-fight press conference. "So I don't know. I can't pay attention to that stuff. At the end of the day, we get in the cage and the words mean nothing. I trained hard for this fight, and that was pretty much it. I won." Bautista shut down Mix over the course of 15 minutes and ended up taking home a unanimous decision win, while extending his winning streak to eight in a row. The MMA Lab product thinks it's time he gets a step-up given his body of work and wants a five-round fight against a title contender. "I definitely want a top-five (opponent)," Bautista said. "I think if Patchy would've won this fight, they would've shot him all the way to the top, so I think I took his spot and all that hype. I definitely deserve a top-five. I'm on an eight fight win streak, and there is no one else above me with a streak like that except for the champion."

Bryce Harper leaves Phillies-Braves game after taking fastball to elbow; X-rays come up negative

(Photo by) Bryce Harper left Tuesday's game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves after being hit on his right elbow with a pitch. Per the TV broadcast, the Phillies announced that X-rays on Harper's elbow from the Phillies clubhouse were negative. The initial diagnosis was of a contusion. Advertisement The incident took place in the bottom of the first inning. Braves starter Spencer Strider threw a 95 mph fastball inside on an 0-1 count that hit Harper on his elbow. Harper immediately clutched his elbow and eventually knelt to the ground in pain. The hit was to the same elbow that required Tommy John surgery in 2022. Harper left the game. Edmundo Sosa took his place on the base paths after Harper was awarded first base. It's not immediately clear how much more time if any Harper will miss or if he'll require further evaluation to the injury. Harper, 32, is an eight-time All-Star and two-time NL MVP. He won the fourth Silver Slugger of his career last season and received MVP votes. In 53 games this season, Harper is slashing .267/.372/.450 with eight home runs, 33 RBI and eight stolen bases. Advertisement The Phillies entered Tuesday's game in first place in the NL East with a 1.5-game lead over the New York Mets. Their 34-19 record entering Tuesday was the best in MLB. Harper is obviously key to Philadelphia's hopes of competing for a World Series championship this season. An injury of any significance would mark a blow to those hopes.

Cubs add INF Nicky Lopez and reliever Drew Pomeranz to roster

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs added infielder Nicky Lopez and reliever Drew Pomeranz as part of a flurry of moves before Wednesday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lopez signed a one-year contract and Pomeranz was placed on the roster two days after he was acquired in a trade with Seattle. It was announced that Pomeranz would report to Triple-A Iowa after the deal, but he watched Tuesday night's 11-10 victory over the Dodgers at Wrigley Field. Infielder Gage Workman was designated for assignment, and right-hander Gavin Hollowell was optioned to Iowa. The NL Central leaders also transferred left-hander Justin Steele to the 60-day injured list. The Cubs also scratched designated hitter Seiya Suzuki from their series finale against Los Angeles because of right wrist soreness. Suzuki, who is day to day, was replaced by Justin Turner. Lopez spent most of spring training with Chicago, but he opted out of his minor league deal on March 21. He signed with the Los Angeles Angels and went 0 for 6 in five games before he was designated for assignment on Friday. Pomeranz signed a minor league contract with Seattle on March 27. He went 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA and two saves in nine appearances with Triple-A Tacoma. The addition of Pomeranz puts another left-hander in a Chicago bullpen that is off to a shaky start. The Cubs began the day with a 5.34 bullpen ERA. But the 36-year-old Pomeranz has been slowed by injuries. He hasn't appeared in a big league game since 2021. He has a connection to Cubs manager Craig Counsell. Pomeranz had a 2.39 ERA in 25 appearances with Milwaukee in 2019 while Counsell was in the dugout with the Brewers. Drafted by Cleveland with the No. 5 pick in the 2010 amateur draft out of the University of Mississippi. Pomeranz broke into the majors with Colorado in 2011.
