TAP Air Portugal Expands in U.S., Operating Chief Shares Growth Strategy
TAP Air Portugal plans to further expand its U.S. presence, riding on Portugal's tourism boom with Americans.
TAP Air Portugal is on an expansion spree in the U.S., adding three new routes in the past month.
The Portuguese flag carrier recently launched new routes between Boston and Porto; Los Angeles and Lisbon; and San Francisco and the Azores. This summer, TAP plans to operate more than 100 weekly flights to and from North America.
Portugal is an increasingly popular European destination for Americans. Since the pandemic, tourism in Portugal has seen record growth, with tourism and travel-related revenues accounting for 15% of the country's GDP.
TAP said it flew 1.59 million passengers between North America and Portugal in 2024, an 8.9% increase from last year. North America makes up around 10% of TAP's global total passengers, which was around 16.1 million in 2024.
