How to dress to disguise your tummy and feel confident, according to an expert
Every woman knows the feeling of standing in front of a full wardrobe, yet convinced there's nothing to wear. Style ruts are an all too common part of life and can take a surprising toll on your self-confidence. But you're not alone, and stylist Nicky Hambleton-Jones's new book, Bolder Not Older, is here to help you reclaim your sartorial power - empowering you to feel confident both inside and out. Nicky is a true expert when it comes to helping women transform their style. Many will recognise her from the hit 2000s TV makeover show, 10 Years Younger, and more recently from presenting Drop A Decade on This Morning. Now, the 54-year-old personal stylist has launched the ultimate accessible guide - an easy-to-follow 12-week program designed to help women rediscover and embrace their unique personal style. Buy Bolder Not Older 'I didn't want the book to be centred around a list of do's and don'ts' she tells Yahoo UK. "People get so bogged down with rules and societal or media opinions that getting dressed stops being fun. So, this book is about stepping away from what other people think you should or shouldn't wear and giving yourself permission to wear what you want, when you want, whatever your age, budget or shape." Having been on a style rediscovery journey herself over the past few years, Nicky says 'a big focus in the book is around invisibility as we get older and how what you wear can put you back in the centre of the room for all the right reasons.' ➡️ What's one common style mistake you wish women over 50 would avoid? Expand "I think the main mistake is not making enough mistakes. If you're not making mistakes, you're not being adventurous enough in what you wear. In my experience, as women get older, they become less adventurous and more limited in their style choices; they're so worried about getting it wrong that they stop trying at all. I'm here to tell you this is your licence to thrill. This is your chance to dress like every day's a special occasion. It's about feeling fabulous in your clothes and radiant in what you wear. And yes, it can still be practical, and no, it's not complicated but it does take a little know-how, a sprinkle of confidence and a big dose of courage but you'll never look back." ➡️ Why does style seem to become more challenging as we age? "There are various issues as play. The first is time, the mid-life is a juggernaut of emotion with the menopause, caring for ageing relatives, bringing up teenagers or dealing with kids leaving home. There is so much going on and so little time for oneself. The second is the menopause, hormonal fluctuations lead to weight gain and all sorts of mental health challenges. When you feel average, the last thing most people do is put on their best outfit, when in fact that's exactly what you should do. Thirdly, knowledge. Being led by what other people are wearing instead of focusing on what works for you, what look you'd like to achieve. Not knowing how to go about achieving this with the body shape changes that also go hand in hand with the menopause. Lastly, comfort is a true style sucker. Don't get me wrong, it's absolutely important to feel comfortable in one's clothes but it's a common misconception that in order to look good you won't feel as comfortable. You most definitely will, but to achieve the right balance you need to invest in the right pieces in your wardrobe to do this. Get out of the habit of throwing anything on or thinking 'oh this will do' - no it won't, you deserve better." ➡️ What are the 3 things you'd recommend doing if you're feeling uninspired by your wardrobe? As for where to start? 'The key to great style is enhancing your natural silhouette with confidence and creativity" Nicky explains in Bolder Not Older. Adding that no matter your size or shape, if you have the right clothes 'you have the power and ability to look amazing, to be bolder, no matter what.' Now, we all know what often pops into our heads when we look at a large portion of our wardrobe on any given day - something along the lines of, 'No, I don't like how my [insert body part] looks in that,' whether it's our bust, arms, tummy, or thighs. 'Your clothes are your secret weapon to looking and feeling fabulous, to living a bolder life'. However, as Nicky emphasises in her book, the key first step in your style journey is refusing to let the areas you feel most self-conscious about hold you back. That's why we've turned to the stylist to reveal her top tips from Bolder Not Older on how to style your tummy area with unstoppable confidence - along with her top high street picks you can shop now. "Wearing the right shapewear can make all the in a few pieces really helps to smoothen out your silhouette, especially the areas you are most self conscious about, works like a magic eraser" the style expert explains in her book. Nicky recommends a waisted brief with extra shaping across the font, revealing her go-to are these seamless design from Skims as they're "lightweight and comfortable to wear day to day." The high-waisted Skims shapewear also smooths the tummy area, eliminating any break points or bulges that typically appear at the top of your regular underwear line. This stretchy shapewear is high-waisted for a cinched waist, and features an interior underband with silicone to prevent it from rolling down. "In my experience, nothing works as well as a bold print when it comes to camouflaging your midline" Nicky explains in Bolder Not Older. She recommends choosing "a style of dress you like wearing but opt for a printed one instead of a block colour and watch your tummy disappear before your eyes." Nicky's top pick is this budget-friendly Mango dress that can easily be dressed up with heels for a special occasion or down with trainers for a more laid-back look. This pink and green floral print shirt dress can easily be dressed up or down. "Tops or dresses with stretch and ruching across the stomach will not only disguise but also define a shape" explains Nicky. She adds: "It's got to be seen to be believed, so many women are too scared to try something in fear of it not looking good, but just imagine if you face the fear and the result is amazing." If you have an occasion coming up, this sequin number with ruched detailing is bound to turn heads for all the right reasons. "Even if you have a large or broad waistline it's still important to define the waist, as it will help to balance your proportions" the stylist explains. Expanding on this, Nicky told Yahoo UK: "A loose-cut dress with a line or seam across the midline is a very effective and flattering way to create the illusion of a waist without overly defining it. This is the perfect style for the summer months, when it's hot and you don't want to wear too much shapewear." This bold dress features gathered tiers, creating a breathable, loose-fitting style that's perfect for summer. Let's be honest - black is most people's go-to when they want to play it safe. But as Nicky points out, "When you feel self-conscious of your body especially your waistline, it's very easy to hide it (or think you're hiding it) under a black canvas." And it isn't actually doing us any favours, as the stylist explains,"In reality, you're fooling no one and you're only making yourself feel worse. In fact, an all-black outfit can often make you look larger, not smaller." "I find tailoring works like a dream when you're trying to disguise a tummy. Mid to high waist trousers will hold you in and a tailored blazer will instantly define your waist," Nicky says, adding, "A blazer is also a must-have layering piece in your wardrobe, as it's a fantastic way to slim and disguise a tummy." High-waisted trousers are particularly flattering for the tummy area, as they avoid cutting across the midsection - a common cause of bulging over the waistband. Nicky recommends a pair from Mint Velvet, noting that the side button detail "also helps to draw the eye away from the tummy area." Wearing a blazer open is another simple styling trick to create a more defined waist. As Nicky advises, "If tummy slimming is your main priority, I'd advise one that's tailored in the waist rather than an oversized or boyfriend style blazer." Her top pick? A great linen option available in a myriad of colours - perfect for summer. These straight cropped chinos are the perfect addition to your spring and summer wardrobe. This lightweight linen blend blazer is ideal for the warmer months and available in a variety of colours. "Having transformed many men and women over the years, I have proved over and over again that bright colours lift moods and change lives," says Nicky. She adds, "A colourful outfit is your body's best disguise." Wearing colour not only makes you feel great, but it also shifts the focus away from your curves. "If you want people to stop commenting on your weight, give them something else to talk about. If you don't want to be described as the large lady in the corner, let them talk about the gorgeous lady in green," Nicky explains. 'Style is not about fitting into a mould but embracing what makes you unique. Every body shape has its own beauty, and the key to great style is enhancing your natural silhouette with confidence and creativity." This one simple trick could be your go-to style solution. "Wear colour on the area you like most, and a darker or more neutral shade on the part you want to hide," explains the stylist. For example, you might choose a pop of colour for your trousers and pair them with a darker-hued top. As for her top tip? "I like to keep it tonal with the brighter and darker tone of the same colour mixed together for an effortless style." Yes, you read that correctly. We know the urge is strong, but you need to stop leaving those unshapely tops and blouses untucked. As Nicky explains, "This may feel uncomfortable as a concept, but it really works." Tucking in your shirt or blouse, either fully with a slight blouson effect or partially with a side tuck, creates a much more flattering silhouette - especially when working with a loose, unfitted top. Nicky says this style trick is "usually best with a high waisted skirt or trousers." Nicky says, "If you take nothing else from this book, take the wrap," so this is one tip worth paying attention to. The stylist explains, "The wrap belt enables you to cinch and define your waist at the narrowest point. It skims over a tummy without clinging," adding that the style is "especially flattering if you've got a good bust as well." Nicky recommends something with an all-over print to get a "double whammy flatter factor," with her top pick being this gorgeous floral option from Aspiga. This floral wrap dress has a great drape and comes in blue or pink. Sometimes, when it comes to clothing, the smallest details can make all the difference - and one of those details is the placement of the zip. It might seem minor, but where a zip sits can completely change how flattering a garment looks. The stylist explains, "Flat fronted trousers with a side zip help to smooth and flatten a tummy without adding the bulk of a button and zip in the middle, which just draws the eye to the centre point of a tummy." "Now, if you're self-conscious about your tummy, the last thing you'd think of wearing is a belt. But actually, a belt can make all the difference. The key is to always go for a waisted belt" Nicky tells Yahoo UK. "The width doesn't matter, but it must sit at the waist" she explains. "What this does is draw the eye to the belt and away from your tummy area and I urge you to try this if it's not something you already do. For example, if you have a dress with a matching fabric belt, swap it out for a waisted belt and see the effect. I love this belt from Reiss - it really elevates any outfit you style it with." This is the perfect waist belt to finish any outfit, and it comes in a variety of colours. Ready to revamp your wardrobe and boost your confidence? 7 of the most shocking Channel 4 shows you completely forgot existed
Channel 4's latest series Virgin Island has been branded 'exploitative' by shocked viewers – but it's not the first time it has ruffled feathers. The broadcaster has a long history of producing controversial content and is considered more 'daring and edgy' than its counterparts, including the BBC and ITV. It's a label that Channel 4 has often leaned into, most notably in the two seasons of Banned, a selection of programmes that had been previously banned from TV or cinema, which aired in 1991 and 2004. Meanwhile, in the 80s, in the hope of gaining a more 'avant-garde' reputation, it broadcast provocative films under the Red Triangle series, named after the content warning sign. In 2007, Channel 4 went too far after commissioning three documentary programmes about masturbation called 'W*nk Week', which were axed before airing over complaints they contradicted the broadcaster's public service broadcasting credentials. But many more eyebrow-raising shows have been broadcast on Channel 4. Here are the broadcaster's most shocking TV shows. A 2001 special of the British satirical current affairs series Brass Eye, Paedogeddon was a parody news programme on paedophilia, covering farcical stories about paedophiles and sexual crimes towards children. The show also starred the likes of Gary Lineker and Phil Collins, who play themselves as celebrities being duped into advocating a spoof children's charity. After it aired, Channel 4's phone lines became jammed with thousands of viewers making complaints, and it was later subject to a special investigation by the Broadcasting Standards Commission. The Met Police also received complaints. Sex Box was released as part of Channel 4's Campaign for Real Sex, which the channel described as 'a series of programmes which aim to reclaim sex from porn.' The broadcaster tried to realise this aim by sending real-life couples into a private box on stage where they have sex and afterwards have a post-mortem about each other's bedroom preferences with Mariella Frostrup. In the second season, Frostrup was replaced by presenting duo Steve Jones and Goedele Liekens. Sex Box has not been officially axed, but a third season has yet to be commissioned. 10 Years Younger launched on Channel 4 in 2004 and was initially presented by stylist Nicky Hambleton-Jones. In the early days of the show, a member of the public was given a total makeover, including plastic surgery, in an attempt to shave years off their age. As well as fetishising youth, 10 Years Younger attracted criticism over the cosmetic procedures, which were often extensive and completed in a short space of time. A huge 3.3 million viewers tuned in to see whether Derren Brown would blow his brains out in a live game of Russian Roulette on Channel 4 in 2003. Attracting fierce criticism from anti-gun campaigners and police, officers in Jersey, where it was filmed, were later forced to confirm that there was 'no live ammunition and no one was at risk' after being inundated by complaints. Illusionist Derren had previously claimed he was using a 'live bullet'. In 2002, German doctor Gunther von Hagens performed a post-mortem in front of hundreds at aLondon theatre, which was later televised on Channel 4. Gunther risked being arrested for the dissection, as public autopsies were illegal under the 1984 Anatomy Act, but police officers in attendance did not act. Over 100 people also complained to Ofcom, but it was later ruled that Anatomy for Beginners had not breached broadcasting rules. Channel 4 has a bit of a thing for sex – and its latest offering on the topic is Open House: The Great Sex Experiment. In the show, committed couples come to a luxury retreat to explore whether having open relationships and sex with other people can strengthen their bond. More Trending Former Brexit minister and ex-Welsh Secretary David Jones branded Open House as 'sexploitation', while sex therapist Lori Beth said it was a 'reality show and not a documentary.' In Supersize vs Superskinny, an underweight and an overweight person cohabited for five days during which they swapped diets while being supervised by Dr Christian Jessen. The programme attracted widespread backlash for portraying eating disorders to a potentially vulnerable audience and perpetuating 'body-shaming.' View More » In a Mamamia article, Supersize vs Superskinny was called 'the most screwed up show on television' and a 'problematic mess.' Got a story? This Morning star reveals unusual way she's been hit by mum's advanced dementia
10 Years Younger star Nicky Hambleton-Jones opens up about how her mother's advanced dementia pushed her to embrace life in her fifties, inspiring a bold new outlook, career comeback and a vow to chase adventure while she can. This Morning stylist Nicky Hambleton-Jones has opened up about how her mother's advanced dementia has changed her perspective on life - and how it has inspired her to live more boldly than ever before. The 54-year-old fashion expert, who recently returned to screens in the ITV show's Drop A Decade segment, said witnessing her mum's decline has given her a renewed sense of urgency to embrace new adventures. 'My mum has advanced dementia, which gives me that sense of urgency,' Nicky explained in an exclusive chat with OK!. 'There's nothing I won't do any more. Before I'd be too scared, but now I'm like, 'Let's go river rafting, let's go climb a mountain!' I'm having more adventures than I've ever had.' Rather than being daunted by midlife, Nicky said she's choosing to see her fifties as a time to live more fully. ' People dread the big 5-0, then you realise the world doesn't freeze over. You still look the same, you still feel the same,' she said. 'But you do realise life is short, so if there's something you want to do, you've just got to get on with it.' Nicky's new mentality didn't come easily. The former 10 Years Younger host said it took her time to rebuild her confidence after being unexpectedly dropped from the Channel 4 makeover series and replaced by Myleene Klass — an experience that she said made her feel like 'a failure.' 'When that happened, it was a shock. Everything evaporated overnight and I felt like such a failure,' she tells us, 'I fixated on people seeing me as a loser. It took a lot of time to reprogramme that and it doesn't happen overnight." Despite the setback, Nicky refused to let that moment define her. Determined to bounce back, she threw herself into rebuilding her career and confidence - a process that began, she says, with "Getting up every day, putting on my lipstick and dressing for the person I want to be." The South African mum-of-two - who shares Ben, 15, and Georgina, 12, with husband Rob - said her return to the spotlight was far from easy. 'I was terrified. I didn't sleep the night before and I was shaking the whole way through it,' she admitted of her comeback on This Morning. 'But the other option was to do nothing, so I told myself to just do it.' Nicky has channelled her journey into a new book, Bolder Not Older, which aims to empower people to embrace fashion and self-confidence at any age. She's also open about dabbling in cosmetic tweaks like Botox, but insists her goal isn't to look younger - just to look and feel her best. 'I don't want to look 'done',' she said. 'I just want to look good for my age.' Bolder Not Older: Dull To Dazzling In 12 Weeks by Nicky Hambleton-Jones (Synergy Publishing, £17.99) is out now. Follow @nickyhambletonjones.

10 Years Younger's Nicky Hambleton-Jones felt like a failure' after brutal axe
Stylist Nicky Hambleton-Jones opens up on the emotional aftermath of being axed from her iconic role on 10 Years Younger, finally feeling like herself again - and her big return to TV Stylist Nicky Hambleton-Jones is back to doing what she loves best – sharing her passion for all things fashion and transforming the way people look and feel about themselves. As well as returning to our TV screens on This Morning 's Drop A Decade, she has a new book out, Bolder Not Older, designed to help people be more adventurous with their style choices regardless of their age and body shape. When OK! catches up exclusively with Nicky, the fashion guru certainly doesn't disappoint in a gorgeous dress, signature red lipstick and heels. 'It's impossible to have a bad day in a bright outfit,' she grins. But there was a darker period in Nicky's life. The 54-year-old – who shares son Ben, 15, and daughter Georgina, 12, with husband Rob Green – was famously dropped from makeover show 10 Years Younger after five years of hosting it, and replaced by Myleene Klass. 'I lived in a spiral of fear of being seen as a loser,' Nicky says, and it's clear the experience hit her hard. The thing that propelled her forward, she tells us, is not wanting being cut from the show to be the end of her story, so she knew she had to put herself back out there. Here, the South African star tells us how it feels being back in the spotlight after 17 years and why she's embracing this exciting new stage of her life… Nicky, how did you get your mojo back after being dropped by 10 Years Younger? When that happened, it was a shock. Everything evaporated overnight and I felt like such a failure. When you have a life shock that affects you personally, it's so difficult when you're in the public eye. I fixated on people seeing me as a loser. It took a lot of time to reprogramme that and it doesn't happen overnight. But the way I do it is by getting up every day, putting on my lipstick and dressing for the person I want to be. How did you feel on your first day on the This Morning set? I was terrified. I didn't sleep the night before and I was shaking the whole way through it. 10 Years Younger was a brilliant but controversial show and the trolling off the back of that was awful. I was like, 'If I go back on TV I'm opening myself up to all that negativity again.' But the other option was to do nothing, so I told myself to just do it. A funny thing is, when I did the series in January, I bumped into Myleene Klass in the corridor and I was like, 'Uh oh.' But I thought, 'I'm just going to own this,' so I said hello and we had a little chat. But I love doing Drop A Decade – it's wonderful helping people feel better about themselves. 10 Years Younger could be quite brutal, but this is uplifting and positive. On 10 Years Younger, people had everything from facelifts to Botox. Have you had any work done? Before Covid I had some fillers around the cheek area, but I noticed they showed through my skin and looked a bit lumpy, so I Ieft that. Then a year ago I tried a bit of Botox and that was amazing, but you have to go to the right person. My big thing is, I don't want to look 'done'. I don't want to look younger, I just want to look good for my age, so I like things that improve the quality of your skin, like radio frequency treatments. Do you think society tries to dictate how we should dress at certain stages in life? People say you become invisible at a certain age, but I say it's you who've stopped making yourself feel visible. You've decided you can't wear bright colours any more or that it's not appropriate to wear anything too clingy. It's the fear of judgement, so you dull down your choices. But you can't let that hold you back. Buy pieces that make your heart leap. The real secret to having great style at any age is to develop a signature look that works for you. That transcends any trends, because it's what you feel good in and it's true to you. How have you embraced being in your fifties? People dread the big 5-0, then you realise the world doesn't freeze over. You still look the same, you still feel the same. But you do realise life is short, so if there's something you want to do you've just got to get on with it. My mum has advanced dementia, which gives me that sense of urgency. There's nothing I won't do any more. Before I'd be too scared, but now I'm like, 'Let's go river rafting, let's go climb a mountain.' I'm having more adventures than I've ever had. You've been married for nearly 20 years. What's your secret? It's impossible not to have ups and downs but when you've got that commitment, you know that every stressful moment is just a blip in the road and you come through it. If you can still have a laugh together, then you know you're OK. You have two kids. What sort of mum are you? I'm not suffocating, but I won't tolerate rudeness, laziness or untidiness, and you have to get outside every day. It's so hard being a parent, because you think you're going to be amazing and then you realise they're not interested because they just see you as Mum. My thing is to be a role model – to exercise regularly and work hard. They've seen me struggle with a career implosion, then build myself up again. I think that's a really important lesson for them. Life isn't sugar-coated, it's a roller-coaster. But it doesn't matter how far you fall, it's all about coming back. What big ambitions are still on your list? I want to win a Bafta – that's my big goal in life. I've got no idea how, but you've got to have a really big dream, because even if you don't get there, just having it propels you further than you ever would have got before. I'd also love to do a bold clothing range that's sexy, sassy and colourful, and I want to travel. For me, the perfect life is a well-rounded life.

Katie Price reveals tightened face after latest transformation while on dog walk
After Katie Price's latest cosmetic work, she's been spotted out and about on a walk with her new dog in Wales. The former glamour model, 46, is no stranger to going under the knife in the name of cosmetic procedures, and her latest facelift has transformed her look. With her new taut face on show, Katie was seen taking her Spaniel puppy Rookie for a walk while wearing a white t-shirt, a black fluffy cardigan, and some silvery sweatpants on Tuesday in Rhyl, North Wales, ahead of her Easter Pantomime Pinocchio at the Pavilion Theatre that evening. She also clutched a vape alongside her dog, who was secured in a pink harness and lead. While unveiling her healed face after her trip to Turkey in August last year Katie said she was 'finally happy' following the £10,000 lifting procedure, which marked her sixth facelift. But she wasn't totally satisfied, as since Katie has got lip filler and anti-wrinkle 'touch ups', adding to a long list of procedures she's put her body through, including 17 boob jobs, botox, nose jobs, eye lifts, tummy tucks, Brazilian but lifts, and liposuction. Katie also recently said she plans on getting her fourth BBL. This is despite concerns about how her body will respond to yet more procedures, with BBLs having the highest death rate of all cosmetic procedures. Dr Mark Solomos, a leading plastic surgeon, previously told Channel 4 show 10 Years Younger: 'The first thing I want to say about Katie is that no responsible surgeon would or should perform surgery on her.' The star has previously admitted she worries about her cosmetic surgeries eventually killing her. During a session with a clairvoyant, Katie was told that she would pass away peacefully in her sleep. The eerie prediction sent her into a spiral, as the mum-of-five was warned by her sister, Sophie, that the clairvoyant could be alluding to being under anaesthesia. 'I know this is really weird, but I was having a conversation with my sister on our podcast the other day,' Katie began in an interview with Greatest Hits Radio. 'And I remember when I was in America and I went and saw a lady with a crystal ball, you know, like a medium or clairvoyant or whatever they're called. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'And I said to her, 'How do you think I'm going to die?' I know not many people would ask that, but I did. 'She said, 'Oh, you're going to die in your sleep peacefully.' And then my sister said, 'And you're going for surgery, you'll probably die in your sleep'.' Katie added: 'That sort of triggered something in my head. And I was like, 'Do you know what? Imagine if that is,' because the amount of times I've been put to sleep and that's stuck in my mind.' It also seems Katie isset on expanding her pet family regardless of warnings from charities not to. When the Mucky Mansion star first revealed her spaniel Rookie at 10 weeks old, she was faced withg huge backlash as animal charities begged her to stop owning pets after seven animals died in her care including horses, dogs, cats, and a chameleon. PETA even offered the TV personality £5,000 to sign a legally binding document to stop her from owning any in the future after she gave away a puppy called Tank after 'losing interest'. Responding to people who say she shouldn't own animals, Katie told The Sun: 'When people say I shouldn't have animals, it's circumstances that were out of my hands. 'It's no lack of me not looking after them or anything like that. I love animals, I love nurturing.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video While Katie's 2024 was a turbulent one, having been arrested at Heathrow Airport on her way back from Turkey in August after having failed to turn up to her bankruptcy hearing, this year is looking up. That's what Katie's psychic Tracey Woolterton – also known as Psychic Tracey – told Metro, anyway. More Trending 'I'm getting May for her. I also feel there's going to be a contract that's going to come her way, so she will be able to sort her finances out,' Tracey said. 'But the thing is with Katie, she's a spender. She needs to learn to reign it in and start saving. I feel it will be to do with TV.' It seems Katie's career prospects are already looking up, as she was recently spotted on a film set of a spoof film called Jackie The Stripper, which sees the TV personality play Lisa, the titular Jackie's mentor in the world of strip clubs and dancing. She stars in it alongside actor James Phelps, 39, who played Fred Weasley in Harry Potter, as well as Charlotte Kirk (Duchess), Jamie Lomas (Hollyoaks), Chloe Meadows (Stigma), and Kimberly Wyatt (13 Going On 30).
