Majlis A'Shura to host Housing Minister Shu'aili on April 21
By OUR CORRESPONDENT Muscat – H E Dr Khalfan bin Saeed al Shu'aili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, will address Majlis A'Shura on April 21 to review his ministry's performance and outline future strategies related to housing and urban development in the country. The session, the council's ninth regular sitting, will focus on five main areas of discussion, according to Ahmed Mohamed Nasser al Nadabi, Secretary General of Majlis A'Shura. H E Shu'aili will begin by presenting an overview of the National Urban Development Strategy and the ministry's initiatives under the 10th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025). This section will cover performance indicators for strategic programmes, housing and urban planning policies, and planning tools intended to promote sustainable development across governorates. It will also address the ministry's contribution to employment generation and projected outcomes of the National Social Housing Plan. The second section will examine legal and legislative frameworks that govern the housing sector, including existing laws and upcoming legislation linked to urban planning. The third part will focus on the ministry's efforts to coordinate activities of public and private entities, including partnership development, real estate investment promotion and urban planning improvements supported by standardised guidelines and performance measures. The discussion will also touch on cross-sector collaboration in areas such as transport, agriculture and renewable energy. The fourth section will highlight progress in digital transformation, particularly the use of artificial intelligence and geographic information systems (GIS) to streamline procedures and enhance governance in real estate. The final section will explore future opportunities and challenges in building sustainable cities and integrated residential communities. H E Shu'aili is expected to detail financing strategies, cost structures and social outcomes, especially as these relate to meeting growing demand for social housing.

Oman: 40% of Ain al Kasfah project's second phase completed
Rustaq: The South Batinah Municipality has announced 40% completion of the second phase of the Ain al Kasfah development project. The Governor's Office stated that the project, featuring ten swimming pools for men and seven for women, a dedicated mosque for women, shaded falaj areas, is progressing steadily. With information signs marking fenced zones and upgraded facilities enhancing visitor experience, the project is expected to attract more tourists, reinforcing Ain al Kasfah's status as a prime destination and contributing to local economic growth. In 2024, the first phase of the Ain Al Kasfah tourist site, renowned for its natural hot springs, was completed. It included restaurants, cafés, expanded parking, and a heritage market. The site is particularly famous for its therapeutic sulphur-rich waters, making it a key attraction. These developments are part of the Governorates Development Programme, aligned with the Royal Directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. Oman: 4,000 teachers to be hired in 2025/2026
Muscat: Majlis A'Shura hosted Dr Madiha bint Ahmed al Shaibani, Minister of Education, on Wednesday to discuss the ministry's progress in school education policies, quality of education, human resource development, training and private school education in the sultanate. Dr Madiha highlighted the continued growth of the education sector, driven by government support and Royal Directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. The number of students in government schools increased from 678,000 in the 2020/2021 academic year to 817,000 in 2024/2025, marking a 20.5% growth. The number of schools is also set to rise, reaching 1,306 in 2025/2026, compared to 1,182 in 2020/2021, reflecting a 10.4% increase. The ministry has expanded teacher recruitment, appointing 15,000 Omani teachers in the first four years of the 10th Five-Year Plan, compared to 6,800 during the ninth plan. An additional 4,000 teachers – primarily Omanis – are expected to join in 2025/2026, taking the total number of teachers appointed under the current plan to over 19,000. The number of private and international schools, including kindergartens, increased to 1,223 in the 2024/2025 academic year from 880 in 2019/2020 – up 39%.
