Fort Bliss soldier was speeding on motorcycle in fatal Spur 601 crash, El Paso police say
A Fort Bliss soldier killed in a crash on the Spur 601 Liberty Expressway was riding at a high speed on a motorcycle when he lost control and crashed into the center concrete barrier, El Paso police said. The single-vehicle crash occurred at 1:36 a.m. on Monday, May 19, on Spur 601 next to Fort Bliss near Global Reach Drive, a police news release issued by Officer Adrian Cisneros stated. Austin Rhodes, 24, with the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command. Rhodes was riding a 2015 Yamaha YZF heading west on Spur 601 when he apparently lost control on a curve in the road and crashed into the center concrete barrier, police said. He died at the scene. The crash was investigated by the Special Traffic Investigations Unit. Fort Bliss to remember, honor those who gave all
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Fort Bliss will remember servicemembers who paid the ultimate sacrifice during its annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 26. The ceremony will be at 9 a.m. May 26 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Ave. The ceremony will be held at the Rostrum area. The event will include speeches to remember servicemembers who died in combat or while serving their country and a wreath-laying ceremony. Lt. Col. Peter Lawall, the deputy commander for the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, will be the keynote speaker. Music will be provided by the 1st Armored Division Band. The ceremony will also feature a cannon salute and color guard. Designated areas for parking and handicap parking will be available through the second gate (pass the main gate to the left), also known as the maintenance gate. Parking is limited, so carpooling is encouraged. Four VA buses and additional golf carts will be available to shuttle veterans and visitors to designated areas within the cemetery. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Bottled water will be provided. 'Memorial Day is a day of remembrance to honor the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. It is a time to reflect on the sacrifices of our fallen heroes and to pay tribute to their legacy of courage, dedication, and selflessness,' Fort Bliss National Cemetery said in its news release. EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The person who died in Monday's crash on Spur 601 has been identified as a Fort Bliss soldier, the 1st Armored Division confirmed on Tuesday, May 20. Fort Bliss sent out a statement on Tuesday morning, which said the following: 'Fort Bliss confirms that during the early morning hours on May 19, 2025, Spc. Austin Rhodes, 24, a Patriot fire control operator assigned to the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, was killed during a single-vehicle accident near mile marker 25 on Texas State Highway Spur 601. Fort Bliss expresses their deepest condolences to the soldier's family. This incident is under investigation by local law enforcement.' As we have previously reported, a person died after a crash on Spur 601 early Monday morning, May 19, El Paso Police said. Police say the call came in at around 1:30 a.m. Monday at Spur 601. Spur 601 was closed near Airport Road and Global Reach for nearly 12 hours, but has since reopened. Police have not identified the victim or provided any other details about the crash.
