JCC makes reading fun with Literacy Day
VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Jewish Community Center is celebrating the joys of reading and inspiring children to pick up a good book.
The JCC is hosting its 14th Annual Literacy Day on Wednesday.
The free, family-friendly event highlights the importance of reading through games and interactive activities.
This year's theme is Fairytales and Fables.
There will be nearly 20 vendors hosting different stations, including dress up, pretend play, arts and crafts, and a dance party.
Literacy Day Chair and JCC Board Member Rachel Priest says each child will leave with a free age-appropriate book.
'They get to pick any book they want from our supply of free books. We have them by age range of the kid, and they get to take home, hopefully, a book that they haven't read before and find a new and exciting story,' said Priest.
The books were all donated by community members and organizations.
Literacy Day also serves as an opportunity for the JCC to show off the services it offers.
Chief Operating Officer Raychel Reilly says the JCC is committed to instilling a love of learning in its students from a very young age.
'We internally promote literacy and a love of learning and a love of books. So, having this big excitement around Literacy Day helps, I think, foster that love of learning and books,' said Reilly.
Literacy Day will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
It is open to all who wish to attend.
