Decades of memories come alive at James Ward Elementary School's 150th anniversary celebration

CHICAGO — Rose Marie Ruggiero, who goes by Cookie, and Mary Reusz, now affectionately known as Grandma Mary, go way back. 'I lived right across the alley from her grandmother,' Reusz said. 'Her grandmother had a cherry tree, and I used to go and steal cherries from the tree.' Along with building humorous memories at home, the ladies, now in their 90s, also shared unforgettable times at James Ward Elementary School. 'The teachers were always so good, and I had a good time here. I didn't go to kindergarten but first grade to eighth,' Ruggiero said. On Saturday morning, the long-time friends returned to the school, located at the corner of 27th Street and South Shields Avenue, sitting side by side in the auditorium. Reusz graduated from eighth grade in 1945, and Ruggiero graduated in 1947 but says it doesn't feel like it's been 78 years. The two were among a large crowd of alumni, current students and educators who came out to celebrate the school's 150th anniversary. Festivities included going back in time with gems from the past on display and students sharing their talents. The first section of James Ward opened in 1875, with two additions coming along in 1897 and 1927. The building is the district's oldest continuously used and operated school. 'It's our oldest school but it's a school that celebrates inclusion, celebrates art,' Pedro Martinez, Chicago Public Schools CEO, said. 'It's a community that has changed over time, but it's always been a wonderful community.' Eric Chen, who graduated from James Ward in 2021, says his elementary school foundation was key to his success as he heads to Princeton University this fall. 'These teachers really put in so much effort, like outside of school hours, to make sure we succeed, so I'm very grateful they're really passionate,' Chen said. As he transitions from CPS, Martinez says he wants to see students like Chen continue representing what the district can offer. 'The talent that exists here, both in our staff and our students. There is just no shortage of talent so when we support that talent, we make our wonderful city even greater,' Martinez said. All these years later, Reusz and Ruggiero say they're proud of the next generation of students for putting their old stomping ground on the map. 'These children are so smart. I am proud of them,' Ruggiero said. 'Well, I say take it all in because you have a wonderful opportunity here at Ward School, see look at us,' Reusz said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Maryland Zoo breaks ground on new red panda habitat

The Maryland Zoo broke ground Thursday on a project that will bring new animals to the oldest part of the property. The first of several new habitats will house red pandas. The project is expected to be completed in 2026, according to zookeepers. "Maryland Zoo celebrates its 150th anniversary next year, and you don't get to be as venerable as we are without constant reinvention," said Maryland Zoo President and CEO Kirby Fowler. "When complete in 2026, the red panda habitat will bring dynamic, charismatic animals right to the front of our zoo." Red panda habitat at Maryland Zoo The new red panda habitat will be located between the round cafe and the round stand in the Main Valley section of the zoo. The Maryland Zoo will break ground Thursday on a project that will bring new animals to the oldest part of the property. The Maryland Zoo The area recently housed a snowy owl, but it was designed to support breeding red pandas. According to zookeepers, red pandas are technically not part of either the panda or bear family, but they are fun and engaging animals. The new habitat will highlight conservation efforts to connect the forested highlands between Nepal and India through reforestation. Maryland Zoo renovations The Main Valley section of the zoo is the oldest on the property. It's where the zoo initially housed exotic animals when it first opened in 1876. Since then, the zoo has expanded and renovated other parts of the property. In 2022, zoo leaders established a 10-year plan to renovate Main Valley. The plan includes new state-of-the-art habitats to house red pandas and gibbons. The habitats will prioritize the welfare of the animals. The zoo has also renovated its historic Crane Barn and brought birds back to the front of the zoo. "This is the first of many zoo improvements that started with our new parking lot last year and will continue with a gibbon habitat, a flyway for our eagle and snowy owl, and upgrades to our rental facilities and guest amenities," Fowler said. Maryland Zoo welcomes new life The Maryland Zoo welcomed new life recently, with the births of a baby blue duiker, a baby lemur and the surprising addition of a female giraffe calf. The baby blue duiker, a type of small antelope, was born in April to mother Flower and father Kuruka. A one-and-a-half-pound baby blue duiker was born at the Maryland Zoo, staff announced in April 2025. The Maryland Zoo The animals stay relatively small, at about seven to 20 pounds, and they live up to 10 years. The baby lemur born in late April was the first birth of the endangered species since they returned to the zoo in 2023. She arrived shortly after the zoo welcomed a 4-year-old female giraffe, who they didn't know was pregnant at the time.
