WMU's student-run radio station named best in the U.S.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The team from Western Michigan University's campus radio station has been recognized on a big stage. The team at was recently named the Best Overall Station at the 2024-2025 Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Awards. Sign up for the News 8 daily newsletter Cully Cooper, the general manager for the student-run station, credited the entire staff for earning the recognition. 'This was a team effort from every individual who makes 89.1 WIDR-FM so unique and beautiful,' Cooper . 'I'm so excited to be a part of this wonderful team and know that being named the top college station in the nation will motivate us to just keep getting better.' In addition to the top prize, WIDR also won Best Logo and Best Artist Interview. According to the university, WMU student media has been nominated for 41 IBS awards since 2017 and has won 12. 'Winning 'Station of the Year' is an acknowledgement that what we're doing at WIDR is special. It proves that student-run media can be bold, dynamic and professional, while still staying true to its independent spirit,' Cooper said. Kalamazoo City Commission agrees to match $500,000 in DNR funds for Milham Park makeover Cooper, who has led the station for the last three years, says the station has grown in a lot of ways recently — expanding programming, giving students more access and allowing DJs and staff to 'push creative boundaries.' 'We've fostered an environment where students and local artists can thrive, and that's reflected in the recognition we're receiving,' Cooper said.
