Berkeley County coroner delivers annual report, saw increase in gun-related deaths
BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell is reflecting on trends his office saw over the past year.
According to the 2024 Coroner's Report, there were 1,944 deaths reported last year, the majority of which were classified as natural deaths.
The Berkeley County Coroner's Office also noted 20 homicides last year. One was attributed to blunt force trauma, while the rest were gun violence, which was an 11% increase from the prior year.
There were also 38 deaths classified as suicide, seven undetermined, and 134 classified as accidental. Of those accidental deaths, 41% were due to drugs.
