The NFL Draft is coming to the National Mall in 2027
Football took over the Oval Office on Monday, when President Trump announced the National Mall would host the 2027 NFL Draft and expressed support for a new Commanders stadium. Why it matters: The NFL is betting a record one million people will attend the three-day event in D.C. The big picture: Trump made the announcement alongside NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Commanders owner Josh Harris and Mayor Muriel Bowser. "I think this is the greatest site in the world," Trump said of the National Mall. D.C.'s plans include a concert and a free fan festival called the NFL Draft Experience, per the announcement. By the numbers: Attendance estimates would blow out the current record: More than 700,000 fans attended the 2024 Draft in Detroit. This year, over 600,000 showed out in Green Bay, Wis., Goodell said. Zoom in: Trump also praised the $3.7 billion plan to build a 65,000-seat Commanders arena at the RFK Stadium site: "It's going to be beautiful." With sight lines of the U.S. Capitol, "it's going to be an architect's dream," Trump said. Harris gifted the president a Commanders jersey with "Trump" and the number 47 on it. "D.C. used to stop on Sundays, and everyone would be inside watching football or everyone would be at the stadium. We want to bring that back," Harris said. Between the lines: Trump is embracing the NFL after past criticism of the league, stemming from his first term when he balked at players protesting the national anthem. What we're watching: The stadium deal is now pending at the D.C. Council. It includes a vision to build 6,000 homes, new retail and commercial development and an entertainment district on 170 acres of federal land at RFK.

UConn's Kaitlyn Chen selected by Valkyries in 2025 WNBA Draft after going to support Paige Bueckers
When UConn guard Kaitlyn Chen attended the 2025 WNBA Draft on Monday, she was just being a good teammate. Chen went with the rest of the Huskies to cheer on Paige Bueckers, who was selected as the No. 1 overall pick by the Dallas Wings. Instead, Chen got a surprise as she was drafted as well: The guard was selected by the Golden State Valkyries in the third round, as the 30th overall pick. Being drafted, while a happy surprise, was a surprise to Chen nonetheless. Advertisement "I was really just here to watch Paige get drafted, and I'm so happy for her, but it's been an unreal night," Chen told reporters after being selected. Chen's selection earned one of the biggest cheers of the night, as her UConn teammates shouted and hugged her after the pick. The team, clearly tipped off to what was about to happen, all stood around Chen with their phones out, ready to record the moment. "To be able to experience that with my team all around me and them all jumping and screaming was pretty amazing," Chen told reporters. The story rings similarly to last year, when Iowa guard Kate Martin attended the 2024 Draft to support Caitlin Clark, and ended up getting drafted by the Las Vegas Aces in the second round. Martin, who was selected by the Valkyries in the expansion draft, will now be Chen's teammate for Golden State's inaugural season. Advertisement Chen joined UConn for her senior year, transferring after three seasons at Princeton. The guard, a Southern California native, first caught UConn coach Geno Auriemma's eye during a matchup between the Tigers and the Huskies in Dec. 2022, when Chen picked up 18 points and seven assists in a narrow loss to UConn. Chen's transfer paid off: She started in 40 games for the Huskies, averaging 6.9 points per game and helping lead UConn to a national championship. Princeton has never taken Chen's transfer personally, and has been publicly rooting for Chen all season. The team took a chance to congratulate Chen on her selection on Monday. Now, Chen will have a chance to join Golden State as the team embarks on its inaugural season. Head coach Natalie Nakase will be hoping to lead the Valkyries to success in the team's first year — and having great teammates like Chen and Martin in the locker room certainly won't hurt.
