Five arrested for damage to property at Loftus Versfeld Stadium

Five arrested for damage to property at Loftus Versfeld Stadium Police arrested five men for public violence and malicious damage to property following a violent protest at Loftus Stadium on Sunday. The unrest broke out during the half-time of the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier between Bafana Bafana and Malawi. Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said about 150 people started protesting at 16:30. She said when public order police tried to speak to them, protesters turned violent and threw objects at the officers. Police responded and arrested five suspects. 'The men face charges of public violence, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and malicious damage to property.' The five suspects are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. Muridili said police must act when protests threaten safety, as per the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act. The act ensures safety at public events like sports matches and concerts. The April violence at Loftus Stadium is still under investigation. Violence broke out after a CAF Champions League match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Espérance Sportive de Tunis. The clash followed Sundowns' 1–0 win at Loftus. Police confirmed that 13 people were injured but refused medical help. Videos on social media showed fans throwing objects, dismantling barricades and fighting, despite security personnel trying to defuse the situation. Sundowns later released a statement condemning the violence. The club apologised to Espérance and their supporters. They noted their fans may not have started the fight, but admitted it happened at their home ground. Sundowns said some fans were attacked with flares and pepper spray. They promised to work with the police to prevent future incidents. #sapsGP Police have arrested five men following a protest at the Loftus stadium in Hatfield, Tshwane district on 11 May 2025. Media Officers gather for CAF, CECAFA Media Officers Workshop in Kenya

A three-day workshop of considerable symbolic importance for East African football commenced on Monday at the Swiss Lenana Mount Hotel in the heart of Nairobi, Kenya. The three-day workshop is underway between 23 – 30 April 2025. Jointly organized by CAF and the CECAFA Zonal Union, the full day workshop brought together 23 Media Officers from 11 countries. This unprecedented gathering in the region underscores a commitment to capacity building in support of the evolving ambitions of African football. Mr. Hussein Mohammed, President of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), formally opened the proceedings, underscoring the significance of the initiative. 'This is not merely a meeting, but a clear demonstration of professionalism and continuous learning,' he said. With the CECAFA region preparing to host both the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the timing is opportune to strengthen the communication capabilities of national federations. Speaking via videoconference, Mr. Lux September, Acting Director and Head of Television and Communication at CAF, urged participants to fully capitalize on this opportunity. 'It is not sufficient to acquire knowledge; it is imperative to implement what you have learned upon returning to your respective duties,' he emphasized, while commending CECAFA for its coordination efforts. A similar message was conveyed by Mr. Auka Gecheo, Executive Director of CECAFA, who expressed gratitude to CAF and its President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, for their unwavering commitment to capacity-building initiatives. He also acknowledged the dedication of the 11 participating national associations. Highly experienced CAF Media and Communications experts, Ms. Charlotte Pelagie Eyoum, as well as Mr. Mondher Chaouachi are leading the proceedings. The workshop is attended by delegates from Kenya, Rwanda, Zanzibar, Tanzania, Somalia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan, Burundi, Djibouti, and Uganda.

Egypt crash out of CHAN qualifiers after home loss to South Africa - National Teams

Egypt's hopes of qualifying for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) ended abruptly on Sunday after a disappointing 3-1 home defeat to South Africa at the Suez Canal Stadium. Having secured a vital 1-1 draw in the first leg away in South Africa last Sunday, courtesy of Mohamed Antar's volley, Egypt failed to build on their away-goal advantage and succumbed to a 4-2 aggregate defeat. South Africa started aggressively, hitting Egypt's post through Craig Weaver in the fourth minute before eventually taking the lead ten minutes later. Maema capitalized on a defensive error inside the penalty area, slotting home comfortably to put the visitors ahead. Egypt survived another scare in the 24th minute when Maema's shot again hit the woodwork. Just three minutes later, however, Mfolozi doubled South Africa's lead after a deflected cross fell kindly at his feet for an easy finish. Mohamed El-Sayed briefly reignited Egyptian hopes, reducing the deficit with a deft finish from a precise cross delivered by Sayed Abdullah in the 31st minute, making the halftime score 2-1. The hosts' chances of mounting a comeback faded shortly after the restart when goalkeeper Mahmoud Abu Al-Saud conceded a penalty for fouling a South African forward. Luthuli confidently converted the resulting penalty in the 51st minute, restoring the two-goal cushion. Despite tactical adjustments and several attacking substitutions by Egypt, the home side struggled to threaten South Africa's composed defense. South Africa comfortably controlled the remainder of the match, securing their passage to the next round. South Africa will now face Malawi, who advanced by overcoming Comoros with a decisive 4-0 aggregate victory. Egypt secure vital away draw against South Africa in CHAN 2025 qualifier - National Teams

Egypt's local national team claimed a crucial away goal after drawing 1-1 with South Africa in the first leg of the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers at Free State Stadium on Sunday. Mohamed Antar put Egypt ahead in the 66th minute with a well-taken volley before South Africa's Jamie Webber equalized with a powerful strike 14 minutes from time. The Pharaohs started cautiously, prioritizing defensive stability, while the hosts struggled to break through. South Africa's first real threat came early in the eighth minute when Monnapule Saleng tested goalkeeper Mahmoud Abou El-Saoud from a distance. Both sides lacked fluency in the first half, so the teams went into the break level at 0-0. After the restart, Egypt capitalized on a defensive mistake, with Antar firing home to give the visitors a crucial lead. However, South Africa responded strongly, with Webber unleashing a long-range effort that found the top corner, denying Egypt a first-leg victory. The result leaves Egypt in a strong position, with the away goal offering a slight advantage ahead of the second leg, scheduled for 9 March in Cairo. A goalless draw would be enough to send Egypt into the final qualifying round. In this round, they would face either Comoros or Malawi for a place at CHAN 2025, which will be held in August in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
