Fadillah highlights need for stable energy grid in Malaysia, points to Spain and Portugal's energy woes
KUCHING, May 5 — Malaysia must learn to focus on renewable energy implementation to avoid facing large-scale energy crises like those occurring in Spain and Portugal. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said Malaysia needs to ensure electricity supply security, particularly in Peninsular Malaysia states with insufficient hydro energy resources. 'In the Peninsula, there's still turmoil about ensuring electricity supply security because there's insufficient water supply, and they rely heavily on solar energy which only lasts four to eight hours. 'This is a challenge that even Europe faces — Spain and Portugal encountered problems due to transmission line instability,' he said during his speech at the 2025 Aidilfitri gathering organised by the Bintangor and Haji Taha Mosque Brotherhood (MBHT) Kuching last night. Fadillah, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said that in Sarawak's context, discussions with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will be held to ensure grid stability in the state, thereby attracting investors. — Bernama

Penang water supply restored to 83% amid scheduled outage
GEORGE TOWN: Penang's water supply has been restored to 83% of affected areas as of 6pm Sunday (April 27), following a scheduled supply interruption that began on Friday night and is expected to be fully restored Monday. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow reported full recovery in three districts, namely Seberang Perai Utara (SPU), Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) and Timur Laut. Seberang Perai Selatan has seen 90% restoration, while Barat Daya remains at 38%. "It is expected that full restoration can be achieved by early Monday. Barat Daya is expected to catch up within hours due to improved preparation, although technical issues must also be taken into consideration," he said. He was speaking to reporters after attending the 2025 Aidilfitri open house hosted by the Penang Muslim League and the Penang Muslim Association, alongside Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak and his wife, Toh Puan Khadijah Mohd Noor. Chow noted that maintaining reservoir water levels during the disruption allowed for quicker restoration compared to previous incidents, where depleted reservoirs delayed recovery. "The experience from previous disruptions had been used to improve the system, ensuring a smoother water restoration process this time around," he added. The scheduled cut, affecting 341,708 accounts across five districts, is part of an RM25mil upgrade at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (LRA) involving 23 projects, aimed at enhancing service for some 465,000 users. - Bernama

Awang Tengah (fifth left) hands over the project to Adison. From third left are Paulus and Ubaidillah. LIMBANG (April 23): Petroleum Sarawak Berhad's (Petros) initial study of potential oil and gas (O&G) reserves in northern Sarawak is expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the Sarawak government is still waiting for complete data regarding the initial study, but there are early indications of potentially game-changing results. 'We have given a licence for Petros to conduct a study on oil and gas in Lawas. I understand that there may be complete data in the third quarter of this year; they will brief me and we pray that it will bring results. 'This is another development that will change the pattern of our income and could be a game changer for development in this area and hopefully will bring results,' he told the media after opening the entrepreneur pavilion and 2025 Aidilfitri celebration in Kampung Pahlawan, here yesterday. He said if Limbang and Lawas are found to have O&G reserves, it would lead to a surge in comprehensive development and provide a bright future for the northern region and the state. Separately, the Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment said the state plans to open a Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office (Stato) in Kalimantan, Indonesia after the establishment of Statos in Singapore and Statob in Brunei Darussalam. 'This office would function as a platform to promote trade and culture, as well as open up new opportunities in the economic and tourism sectors that would benefit both parties,' he said. 'This year, we will go there to identify a suitable office for us to establish a Stato in Kalimantan.' Among those present at the event were Batu Danau assemblyman Datuk Paulus Palu Gumbang, Northern Region Development Agency (NRDA) director Datu Ubaidillah Latip, Awangku Jinal Abedin Datuk Pengiran Jawa – a political secretary to the Premier, Limbang Resident Yunus Tambi, Limbang District Officer Sulaiman Engal, and Limbang District Council deputy walikota Adison Langgar.
