Hannah Proud Of Sepak Takraw Team's Performance Despite Final Loss To Thailand

PUTRAJAYA, May 19 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh is proud of the national sepak takraw squad's performance in the recently concluded 2025 Asian Cup, adding that they have the potential to emerge victorious in the next edition. She said this was based on her own observations after watching the team regu final at the Titiwangsa Stadium in Kuala Lumpur last night, with Thailand emerging champions after defeating Malaysia 2-0. "I feel that this is a proud achievement. If we look at the performance, although they lost both games, the opening set was quite a closely-fought affair. bootstrap slideshow "So, I know that our players did their best. Not just the men's team, the women's squad as well,' she told a media conference after chairing the Strategic Collaboration Coordination Meeting between the ministry and the National Registration Department here today. Hannah also praised the efforts of the Sepaktakraw Association of Malaysia (PSM) in implementing various talent development programmes to unearth new faces. "I think that with more such exposure when we become host, we will be able to follow (the progress) of more players. I believe that one day we will win the Cup,' she said. In last night's final, Malaysia's first regu, comprising apit kiri (feeder) Amirul Zazwan Amir, tekong (server) Mohammad Syahir Mohd Rosdi and apit kanan (killer) Mohamad Azlan Alias, lost 11-15, 15-12, 15-17 in a thrilling encounter. The second regu of Farhan Adam, Muhammad Haziq Hairul Nizam and Muhammad Noraizat Mohd Nordin, meanwhile, won the first set 15-13 but lost the next two 13-15, 4-15 to the Thai trio of Sittipong Kamchan, Tanaphon Sapyen and Sirisak Anuloon. Asked if the ministry planned to build a stadium specifically for sepak takraw, Hannah said there are no such plans as the existing facilities at the Jalan Raja Muda Stadium (SJRM) in Kampung Baru were sufficient for the national team.

The media had previously reported that SJRM is fully managed by PSM as the Malaysian Sepak Takraw Academy Centre, thus becoming a development hub for the traditional sports a the grassroots and elite levels.

National regu team still not strong enough

NATIONAL sepak takraw team head coach Ahmad Jais Baharun admitted that the national squad are still not strong enough in the team regu after losing to Thailand in the final of the event in the 2025 Asian Sepak Takraw Cup today. According to Ahmad Jais, he accepted the defeat but will conduct a thorough evaluation to ensure the national team can overcome their arch rivals in future tournaments. 'Personally, I see that our team are still not quite good enough. I feel our team need to double their efforts to contain Thailand's attacks. 'If we look at Thailand's performance, they played with more precision in both attack and defence. That, I think, is what sets us apart from the Thai team,' he said when met by the media after the final at Titiwangsa Stadium here. Earlier, in the team regu final of the 2025 Asian Cup, the national squad had to concede a 0-2 defeat to Thailand, once again failing to end Malaysia's 34-year drought against the Thais in the team regu event. The first national regu trio, Amirul Zazwan Amir (left flank), Mohammad Syahir Mohd Rosdi (tekong) and Mohamad Azlan Alias (right flank), lost 11-15, 15-12, 15-17 to the Thai trio. The second regu, consisting of Farhan Adam, Muhammad Haziq Hairul Nizam and Muhammad Noraizat Mohd Nordin, who were counted on to revive Malaysia's hopes in the final, also failed to deliver victory after going down 15-13, 13-15, 4-15. Meanwhile, Ahmad Jais said that although he was disappointed not to clinch victory in the team regu event, he expressed gratitude to his players who gave their best in the final. 'The players gave their all and we must accept this result with an open heart. We need to work even harder to improve the quality of play in the future,' he said.

2025 Asian Cup: Over 80 % of players from world cup winning squad retained

OVER 80 per cent of the national players who made history by winning the 2024 Sepaktakraw World Cup have been retained for the 2025 Sepaktakraw Asian Cup, which begins on Saturday (May 10). Sepaktakraw Association of Malaysia (PSM) president Datuk Sumali Reduan said the decision was taken to ensure that the national team can continue to excel as well as to strengthen the existing combinations ahead of the prestigious regional tournament. 'There are not many changes to the lineup. For example, we keep the existing lineup in the regu event but have added a young player, Khairul Aman Mohd Rosdi, to strengthen the mix of senior and new players. 'For the doubles event, we are keeping the same pairing but adding another young player, Muhammad Ridzwan Hakim Muhammad,' he said, adding that they have formed scratch pairs for the quadrant event. He said this at a press conference following the launch of the national sepaktakraw team's jersey and squad for the 2025 Asian Cup here today and also present was Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, who is also the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) vice-president. Sumali said they would pay special attention to ending the nation's 33-year title drought in the team regu event. At today's event, the PSM unveiled the national squad's new jersey, sponsored by international sports brand Puma. Sumali said the new jersey, featuring the official colours of yellow and black, is expected to boost the players' morale and inspire them to perform excellently at the championship. He also thanked Puma and Telekom Malaysia (TM) for their partnerships with PSM in this tournament and the upcoming sepaktakraw development programmes nationwide. The 2025 Asian Cup will have four events: regu, doubles, quadrant and team regu. Malaysia have been drawn in Group D for the regu event alongside the Philippines, Nepal and Singapore. In the team regu event, Malaysia are in Group B with South Korea, Brunei and Japan. For the quadrant event, Malaysia are grouped in Group B with the Philippines, Japan and China, while in the doubles event, Malaysia have Thailand, Taiwan and Nepal for company in Group B.
