Mohamad Azlan in hot water for ignoring rest order after fracture
NATIONAL sepak takraw right apit (striker) Mohamad Azlan Alias has been issued a show-cause letter after playing for his club, Melaka Titans, in the domestic league despite being advised to rest for two months due to a fractured elbow sustained last month. Sepak Takraw Association of Malaysia (PSM) president Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan said the letter was sent to both Mohamad Azlan and his club, requiring a response within seven days from yesterday. 'The (fracture) report came from the doctor and the National Sports Institute (ISN), so it must be respected. Mohamad Azlan is needed for bigger tournaments, representing the country at the Thai King's Cup in July and the SEA Games (in December). 'If he's not fully recovered and plays again, risking further injury, he may need a longer recovery period. Who will bear the consequences? He's a national player,' Mohd Sumali said when met at the STL (Sepak Takraw League) 2025 Community Programme at the Taman Mesra sepak takraw court here today. Mohd Sumali said he will personally raise the issue at a meeting to discuss follow-up actions. Mohamad Azlan was confirmed to have suffered a fracture in his left elbow following an incident during the team regu final at the 2025 Asian Sepak Takraw Cup at Titiwangsa Stadium in Kuala Lumpur last month, and was advised to rest for two months. However, the 27-year-old national team main striker was spotted competing for his club in the STL division one recently. 'Everyone is asking why he was playing. This has caused a stir because the mindset is that he's injured and undergoing treatment,' said Mohd Sumali. Meanwhile, today's programme saw STL players, television personalities and local residents come together for a gotong-royong effort, including repainting and upgrading the Taman Mesra sepak takraw court owned by the local residents' association. The court was chosen for its historical significance, having served as a recreational and training hub for the community and producing numerous talented players for over 50 years.

National regu team still not strong enough
NATIONAL sepak takraw team head coach Ahmad Jais Baharun admitted that the national squad are still not strong enough in the team regu after losing to Thailand in the final of the event in the 2025 Asian Sepak Takraw Cup today. According to Ahmad Jais, he accepted the defeat but will conduct a thorough evaluation to ensure the national team can overcome their arch rivals in future tournaments. 'Personally, I see that our team are still not quite good enough. I feel our team need to double their efforts to contain Thailand's attacks. 'If we look at Thailand's performance, they played with more precision in both attack and defence. That, I think, is what sets us apart from the Thai team,' he said when met by the media after the final at Titiwangsa Stadium here. Earlier, in the team regu final of the 2025 Asian Cup, the national squad had to concede a 0-2 defeat to Thailand, once again failing to end Malaysia's 34-year drought against the Thais in the team regu event. The first national regu trio, Amirul Zazwan Amir (left flank), Mohammad Syahir Mohd Rosdi (tekong) and Mohamad Azlan Alias (right flank), lost 11-15, 15-12, 15-17 to the Thai trio. The second regu, consisting of Farhan Adam, Muhammad Haziq Hairul Nizam and Muhammad Noraizat Mohd Nordin, who were counted on to revive Malaysia's hopes in the final, also failed to deliver victory after going down 15-13, 13-15, 4-15. Meanwhile, Ahmad Jais said that although he was disappointed not to clinch victory in the team regu event, he expressed gratitude to his players who gave their best in the final. 'The players gave their all and we must accept this result with an open heart. We need to work even harder to improve the quality of play in the future,' he said.

Malaysia's doubles to face India in semi-finals of Asia Cup
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia had no trouble confirming a place in the semi-finals after defeating Taiwan 2-0 in the doubles event of the 2025 Asian Sepak Takraw Cup at Titiwangsa Stadium today. In the concluding match to determine the runner-up of Group B, Malaysia fielded Muhammad Noraizat Mohd Nordin and Aidil Aiman Azwawi, who comfortably secured a 15-11 win in the first set. The second set featured a tense contest as both teams traded points, but the re-entry of Muhammad Noraizat—who was temporarily replaced by Muhammad Redwan Hakim Muhammad—shifted the momentum back in Malaysia's favour. A powerful final serve by Muhammad Noraizat then sealed the victory at 17-15 for the national side. Malaysia, as the runners-up of Group B, are scheduled to face Group A winners India in the semi-finals tomorrow. – BERNAMA
