Photos: Thousands hit the streets for 2025 Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon 'It's amazing. Everybody's doing such a great job. And it's right here at the top of the hill on Noelton, and you can just see the relief on their faces. It's great,' said Crystal Ivey, a spectator supporting her daughter-in-law. 'I think it's incredible. Just seeing the training, the dedication they put into it and for it all to culminate. It's not perfect with the weather, but it's amazing to see the endurance and the athletes here,' added Grant Ivey. World record holder Truett Hanes, participated in his second marathon of the year. He shared that he plans to tackle nine this year: next up he'll take on the Boston and Eugene marathons. 'You don't know the joy of crossing the finish line until you do it. And then it's just so positive and everyone comes out and supports each other, and everyone has a big smile on their face when you come across the finish line. You can't really justify it by words. You just have to experience it for yourself. So, I just hope everyone gets that opportunity, ' explained Hanes. Runners from out of town felt the warmth of Knoxville's hospitality with locals offering loud cheers and encouragement throughout the race. East Tennesseans join nationwide 'Hands Off!' protests against Trump, Musk 'Without my family here, I wasn't really sure how it was going to go coming here by myself, but the crowd was here just to lift me up. Every single step of the way, people were saying, 'You look great, you look strong, you're smiling, you're having fun. Go after it.' And giving little kids high fives, it was just a blast,' said Ryan Baellquist-Ledger a marathon runner. 'I just feel lucky to be able to do this. And I'm thankful for the health that I have. And then to be able to come to Knoxville and run this with great people and run in the rain is just a blessing. So, thank you guys for having me out,' added Hanes. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. ‘This is not the work. This is the fun': Runners ready to compete in Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — With the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon coming up Sunday, runners have been preparing at the Goody's Health & Fitness Expo on Saturday. All types of runners, from experienced athletes to beginners, including many from out of state, have signed up to race. 'Just have confidence in yourself and have a great time and appreciate the work that you put into it. And this is a victory lap. You know, this is not the work. This is the fun,' said first-time marathon runner Marni Cochrane. RESULTS: 5K Race Winners at 2025 Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon At the expo, runners were picking up their bibs and gear, preparing for the big race. Several participants in both the marathon and half-marathon expressed their excitement about finally crossing that finish line after months of hard training 'The satisfaction, I guess from finishing. Just being like, 'okay, cool. I did it.' Because I've never done like a marathon or half marathon. So just being able to say that I did one, I think it's going to be pretty cool,' said Aaron Bishop, a half marathon runner. High school cross country athlete Keegan Smith said there's no better way to end his Knoxville running career. 'Next year I'm heading out to Colorado to run for the Buffaloes. I think I kind of wanted to put a nice little bow on my time here in Knoxville, and what better way than to run the Covenant Health Knoxville Half Marathon? I've never done it before. Obviously, I've had friends do it, but I just wanted to kind of have fun and not really put pressure on myself and just really enjoy it, you know, get one last stroll around the city, as I like to say,' explained Smith. Two-time team USA Olympian Ryan Hall shares advice for those running the marathon on Sunday. 'The last six miles is all heart. But the first 20? You need to be smart as an athlete and realize you still have a long ways to go and find that perfect kind of effort level where you can hang out for hours and hours,' he said. ▶ See more top stories on The marathon, relays, and half marathon will begin at 7:30 am. What's new about the 2025 Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon course

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — One of the big changes this year for the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon course is the runners coming through our parking lot at WATE. To learn about this year's course, 6 News anchors Bo Williams and Lori Tucker joined marathon race director Jason Altman to see what changes have been made. Knoxville marathon finish line captain inspiring students to run 'We've got some significant changes to the second-half of the course and as a result, we had to add some mileage and like what better place, we're in Fourth and Gill already, so why not come a couple blocks up and come right through the WATE parking lot,' said Altman. One of the big reasons for the changes for the full marathon runners is because the Gay Street bridge is closed. 'We love going into all our neighborhoods and Island Home is important. So, we wanted to continue to utilize Island Home as part of our racecourse. Previously, we took the James White Parkway to get into the neighborhood and we came back on Gay Street Bridge. With it being closed to both the pedestrians and vehicles, we had to get creative. So, we're doing similar to what the bike race did. We are going to go in Island Home via the James White Parkway and come back on the opposite side of James White Parkway to get us back across the river and then we're able to get off at Riverside Drive,' explained Altman. So, while runners can't be on top of the bridge there, they can run underneath it. Relay team aims to break Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon record set in 2007 'We've exited island home, we've come back across the river on the northside, runners have come down from James White Parkway all the way this way on the Neyland Greenway, taking the sidewalk past Calhoun's on the river and heading ever so close towards the finish,' said Altman. Of course, the sign that the runners are almost done is when they see the Sunsphere, but how they get into the World's Fair Park will be a little different than in years past. 'Previous years everyone has finished coming Clinch Avenue Bridge under the viaduct, finishing at World's Fair Park Drive. New this year, the marathoners and the relay participants will come along Second Creek Greenway past the base of the Sunsphere until they ultimately finish down at the finish line at World's Fair Park,' said Altman. List: Road closures for the 2025 Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon At the finish line, runners will receive their participant medal and celebrate finishing the race.
