MIDLAND, Mich. — Somi Lee poured in an 8-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to team with fellow South Korean Jin Hee Im to win the Dow Championship on Sunday, denying Lexi Thompson her first LPGA title in six years. Thompson's partner, Megan Khang, had a chance to extend the playoff, but she missed a 5-foot birdie putt that was on the low side of the hole from the start. Thompson made an 8-foot birdie putt on the par-3 18th hole, with Khang still facing a 6-foot birdie attempt, as the American duo closed with a 10-under 60 in the fourballs format. They were the first to post at 20-under 260. Lee made a 10-foot birdie putt to tie for the lead on the 17th. Im and Lee missed birdie chances on the 18th in regulation for the win. The playoff switched to foursomes. Thompson hit the tee shot on the 18th to just 5 feet right of the cup. Im went nearer the pin but 8 feet long, setting up Lee for the winning putt. 'Bummer to miss the last one in the playoff to force another hole, but very happy how we played,' Khang said. Thompson has not won since the ShopRite LPGA Classic in 2019 and decided last summer to no longer play a full schedule. The Dow Championship was her eighth tournament this year. Im and Lee are in their second year on the LPGA Tour and this was their first title in America, though both were prolific winners on the Korea LPGA. Im has won six times on the KLPGA, while Lee has five KLPGA titles. 'I can't believe it,' Lee said after making her winning putt. Lindy Duncan and Miranda Wang had a 59 in the better-ball format and tied for third, two shots out of the playoff. They were joined by Manon De Roey and Pauline Roussin-Bouchard, who teamed up for a 64. Albane Valenzuela and Sarah Schmelzel, who had the 54-hole lead, closed with a 66 and failed to make birdie over the final seven holes. They finished fifth, three shots behind. Thompson did not indicate when she would play again. Next on the LPGA schedule is the Evian Championship in France, a major Thompson has skipped every year dating to 2019. The Dow Championship is the only official team event on the LPGA schedule.

Sarah Schmelzel, Albane Valenzuela, both winless on tour, lead LPGA's team event

MIDLAND, Mich. — Sarah Schmelzel and Albane Valenzuela took the third-round lead Saturday in the Dow Championship, shooting a 2-under 68 in alternate-shot play to move into position for their first LPGA Tour victories. Schmelzel and Valenzuela had a 13-under 197 total at Midland Country Cup heading into the better-ball final round. They opened with an alternate-shot 68 on Thursday and had a best-ball 61 on Friday. 'You're kind of on pins and needles most of the day, just hoping you don't get your partner in trouble,' Schmelzel said. 'Just super solid. I feel like we had really good attitudes throughout the entire day. I think both of us took every single shot as it came.' The teams of Jin Hee Im-Somi Lee (68) and Manon De Roey-Pauline Roussin-Bouchard (69) were a stroke back. 'I'm very proud of us,' De Roey said. 'We hung in there. We fought until the end.' Jennifer Kupcho and Leona Maguire, the second-round leaders after a 60, birdied the final two holes for a 72 that left them tied for fourth at 11 under with Lauren Hartlage-Brooke Matthews (66) and Sung Hyun Park-Ina Yoon (67) . Kupcho won in 2022 with Lizette Salas. 'Just try and go low and try and post a number early and see what happens.' Maguire said. 'I think it was nice to see two putts go in at the end.' Lexi Thompson-Meghan Kang (68) and Rio Takeda-Miyu Yamashita (67) were 10 under. Defending champions Ruoning Yin and Jeeno Thitikul, both among the top five in the women's world ranking, were 9 under after a 67. Schmelzel and Valenzuela parred the final seven holes. They had four birdies and two bogeys in the round. 'I feel like we had a really good day,' Valenzuela said. 'Our goal in foursomes was just to get a couple under or maybe a little bit better. We had a few mistakes, and that's going to happen in this format. We also did a lot of really good stuff.'

Who leads the LPGA's Dow team event and which big names didn't make the weekend?
The duo Jennifer Kupcho of the U.S. and Leona Maguire of Ireland will take a one-shot lead into the weekend at the LPGA's team event, the Dow Championship. Those two teamed up for a 10-under 60 on Friday in the second round in the four-ball, or best ball, format at Midland Country Club. Their scorecard shows eight birdies and an eagle on the par-70 track. They are at 13 under overall, a shot better than Gemma Dryburgh and Cassie Porter. "The plan today was just to give ourselves as many chances as we could, try to get two chances on every hole. For the most part, we did that. It was nice to start off with a birdie and sort of an eagle very early on to get the ball rolling," Maguire said. "Jen made a nice birdie on 18 to sort of keep the momentum going through the turn." Kupcho won this event with Lizette Salas in 2022. "I think the partners certainly help. I think just in general I enjoy coming to Michigan, both Grand Rapids and here in Midland. I have two really great host families, and really both cities do a really good job of coming behind each event," she said. "I just really enjoy coming out here, enjoy the community and just having all the fans. It's always a great environment. So I love it here." Jeeno Thitikul and Ruoning Yin, the Dow defending champions, will make the weekend but they have work to do. The pairing is tied for 17th at 6 under. They shot 66 on Friday. Team Biggie Smalls, made up of Lexi Thompson and Megan Khang are tied for ninth, five shots off the lead. What's their favorite part of this unique event? "The unfiltered comments in between. That we'll keep to ourself," Khang said as the two laughed. "I think we really feed off each other really well. She has a great personality and keeps it lighthearted out there," Thompson said. "I'm probably more on the serious side of things, but I need that balance." "We have great banter," Khang said. "Yeah, I need that balance," Thompson reiterated. "And that's what makes us a great team." Teams who missed the cut at the 2025 Dow Championship There were 72 teams when the week started but just 37 will advance.
