IPL 2025 Qualifier 2: PBKS drop Rohit Sharma once, but don't repeat GT's mistake; send him back for 8
When everyone expected Gujarat Titans (GT) to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Eliminator against Mumbai Indians (MI), they made a costly mistake — dropping Rohit Sharma's catch not once, but twice. The batter then made them pay as he smashed 81 off 50 balls. Now, in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Punjab Kings (PBKS) repeated that same error, letting the 'Hitman' off the hook when he was on just 3 runs. However, Rohit gave PBKS another opportunity — and this time, they didn't let it slip. Rohit Sharma's dismissal After Azmatullah Omarzai dropped him in the 1.5 over, captain Shreyas Iyer handed the ball to Marcus Stoinis. The Australian all-rounder struck on just his second delivery, dismissing Rohit Sharma for 8 runs. It was Stoinis' first wicket in 13.3 overs in IPL 2025. Stoinis dug it in short, and Rohit went for the pull, aiming for six. However, he picked out deep square leg, where Vijaykumar Vyshak was positioned. After the catch was taken, the Aussie thumped his chest and roared — "Come onnn!" PBKS vs MI: Teams Punjab Kings (Playing XI): Priyansh Arya, Josh Inglis(w), Shreyas Iyer(c), Nehal Wadhera, Marcus Stoinis, Shashank Singh, Azmatullah Omarzai, Kyle Jamieson, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra ChahalImpact Subs: Prabhsimran Singh, Praveen Dubey, Suryansh Shedge, Xavier Bartlet, Harpreet Brar Mumbai Indians (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma, Jonny Bairstow(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya(c), Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner, Raj Bawa, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, Reece TopleyImpact Subs: Ashwani Kumar, Krishnan Shrijith, Raghu Sharma, Robin Minz, Bevon Jacobs

Hardik Pandya's 3-Word Reaction To Shubman Gill's Post On Rift Between Duo Sums It All Up
Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya and his Gujarat Titans counterpart, Shubman Gill, had some tense moments on the field as the two squared off in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Eliminator on Friday. Right from the toss, something seemed off between the two Team India mates, especially after an awkward handshake snub. Even after Gill was dismissed cheaply in the middle, Hardik let his feelings be known aggressively while passing by the GT skipper. The antics on the field made many wonder if all was well between the two. After Shubman Gill shared a 'nothing but love' story on Instagram, dedicating it to Hardik, the MI captain also shared the story on his account, with the caption: "Always shubhu baby". The duo, in the process, buried all the negative talks going on the internet about a possible rift in their relationship. Recapping the match, a brilliant half-century by Sai Sudharsan and his partnership with Washington Sundar went in vain as fine death bowling effort from the five-time champions helped the Blue and Gold franchise eliminate the 2022 champions from the competition with a 20-run win at Mullanpur. With this win, MI will now play Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Ahmedabad on June 1 for a spot in the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on June 3. MI won the toss and elected to bat first. They started off with a bang, with Jonny Bairstow (47 in 22 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes) and Rohit Sharma taking on pacers really well. Rohit went on to score his third fifty in IPL knockouts, making 81 in just 50 balls, with nine fours and four sixes. He also completed his 7,000 IPL runs, becoming the second batter to do so. Fine cameos from Suryakumar Yadav (33 in 20 balls, with a four and three sixes), Tilak Varma (25 in 11 balls, with three sixes) and Hardik Pandya (22* in nine balls, with three sixes) took MI to 228/5. Sai Kishore (2/42) and Prasidh Krishna (2/53) were the top bowlers for GT. In the run chase, GT lost skipper Shubman Gill early. However, Sai Sudharsan (80 in 49 balls, with 10 fours and a six) stitched half-century partnerships with Kusal Mendis (20 in 10 balls, with a four and two sixes) and Washington Sundar (48 in 24 balls, with five fours and three sixes), keeping GT ahead of the required rate. However, some fine death bowling prevented them from winning as MI restricted GT to 208/6 in 20 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah dubbed 'cheat code' as Ashwin cites Road Rash: 'He makes captain look better than he actually is'
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin dubbed Jasprit Bumrah the 'cheat code' after the pacer led Mumbai Indians to a win over Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Eliminator. Mumbai Indians, the five-time champions, progressed to Qualifier 2 after registering a 20-run win in Mullanpur. For the majority of the contest, the Shubman Gill-led side threatened to chase down 229 but Jasprit Bumrah came up with a brilliant four-over spell, conceding just 27 runs at an economy of less than seven runs per over. Washington Sundar and Sai Sudharsan put on 84 runs for the third wicket. It was Bumrah who ended the crucial partnership as he rattled the stumps of Sundar in the 14th over, dismissing him for 48. The left-handed batter had no answers to a toe-crushing yorker and as a result, he was sent back to the pavilion. Lauding Bumrah, Ashwin said that the pacer sometimes makes the captain look better than he actually is. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya also admitted to being in a position of luxury by having a bowler like Bumrah in the team. "This game could have gone even closer if Jasprit Bumrah's over didn't happen. The asking rate was like 12, 13, 14 but he gave like 7 or 8 runs in his last two overs. Rahul Tewatia hit him for a six but still, the way he came back and gave one run in the next two balls, that defines Bumrah. I had tweeted during the T20 World Cup that Bumrah is a cheat code in today's T20 cricket. Have you ever played this road rash, NFS game? It's a cheat code," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'. "If you play these games, you can enter a code, and you can run faster. You can beat everyone else. It's a cheat code. In today's world, as a captain, sometimes I feel Jasprit Bumrah makes a captain look better than they actually are. The way he nails those yorkers, changes up his slower balls, all that said and done, I think Mumbai also went to yorkers very early," he added. Also Read: Jasprit Bumrah refuses to listen to Jayawardene, tells MI coach to calm down Bumrah has been the standout performer for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025 season, taking 18 wickets. Time and time again, he has stood up for the franchise when the team has been in a difficult position. However, Ashwin urged fans not to compare him with Wasim Akram and Malcolm Marshall as he is not a fan of comparing cricketers from different generations. "I have never seen Malcolm Marshall's bowling. But, I have heard a lot about him. I have seen Wasim Akram's bowling. He has given nightmares to the Indian team. But, this comparison across generations is a very wrong thing to do. In today's world, in Indian cricket, in the landscape in which we consider batsmen to be great people, I am so, so happy," said Ashwin. "I am talking in my own language because everyone sees this. Otherwise, I would have been a little more free-flowing. I am so, so, so happy for Jasprit Bumrah. Jasprit Bumrah has definitely given phillip for Indian fast bowlers to run in a long way and bowl with smartness, with solid execution. Jasprit Bumrah, the bowler, has won. But, what he has done to the community of bowling in India, especially fast bowling, is another topic altogether," he added. Mumbai Indians will now take on Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, June 1.

'You cannot replace that': MI coach Jayawardene hails 'big-game player' Rohit after his 'fire in belly' is questioned
A former Indian cricketer recently questioned Rohit Sharma's attitude. The former MI captain replied in the best way possible. read more Rohit Sharma was the player of the match as Mumbai Indians won the IPL 2025 Eliminator. Image: PTI Mumbai Indians (MI) head coach Mahela Jayawardene hailed former captain Rohit Sharma for turning up the heat in 'big games' as the opener smashed 81 from 50 balls in the five-time champions' Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Eliminator victory in Mullanpur on Friday. Rohit had even been accused of lacking 'fire in the belly' as he went three innings without a fifty before the Eliminator against the Gujarat Titans (GT). But in the playoffs match, he came good once again, smashing a fiery fifty and helping MI post a mammoth total of 228/5, which proved to be 20 runs too much for GT . STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Jayawardene hails 'big game' player Rohit Sharma Rohit was, of course, assisted by a few dropped catches and opening partner Jonny Bairstow's blitzkrieg, which allowed him time to settle and score big. Bairstow scored 47 runs in 22 balls. 'RO batted brilliantly. I think he took his time a little bit, letting Jonny take control initially. And then, when he knew it was his time, he got into a brilliant tempo. The pressure that he put on Sai [Kishore] and Rashid [Khan] in that situation was absolutely brilliant," Jayawardene said in the post-match press conference. 'In big games, he does have a different gear that he plays. That's what experience does, and you cannot replace that,' he added. Jayawardene also highlighted the winning culture Mumbai Indians and praised the team's smart tactical shift to a barrage of yorkers after recognising that the slower deliveries weren't gripping the surface. 'We couldn't get our grip. Planning-wise, we changed our plans to bowl yorkers as much as we could because the length balls were skidding through. The variations were not happening. I think it was a tough last 10 overs for us, but the experienced heads held together and we executed brilliantly,' Mahela said. 'When you have a winning culture, it's easier to try and have that same thing going through. We have a very experienced core group within our ranks. That winning mentality itself comes through from those senior players. Players who have won trophies do help. My job is to try and cultivate the new guys who are coming into the squad. After the big auction, we had quite a few new faces. I think telling them about how we operate and having that attitude that we'll never die from a situation always works,' he added. Shubman Gill blames dropped catches, bowling for defeat to Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 Eliminator: 'Not easy when we drop sitters'
Shubman Gill's Gujarat Titans paid the price for poor fielding and bowling as Mumbai Indians punished them with a mammoth target that eventually proved to be insurmountable despite some impressive batting from Sai Sudharsan. read more Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill blamed his team's fielding for their defeat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Eliminator on Friday and admitted that they conceded a few too many runs at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, against Mumbai Indians (MI). GT fought hard in the 229-run chase after Rohit Sharma blasted 81 off 50 balls and Jonny Bairstow scored 47 in just 22 balls on his IPL 2025 debut to help Mumbai put up a mammoth target . Sai Sudharsan slammed 80 off 49 for Gujarat Titans in the chase and kept the hopes alive until the back end of the match, but a lack of support from other batters eventually came back to bite the former champions. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Besides Washington Sundar (48 off 24), no other batter was able to play an impactful knock and the loss of Jos Buttler was quite evident. GT, however, also paid the price for dropping three catches in the first innings as MI posted a total of 228/5 and they fell short by 20 runs. Shubman Gill blames Gujarat Titans' fielding, bowling Gill lauded Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar for their impressive batting under pressure and for constructing a thrilling chase. However, the India Test captain also admitted that Titans had conceded at least 18 runs extra on the Mullanpur pitch as they dropped some big catches. 'Brilliant game of cricket, we were right in it,' Gill said. 'Last three-four overs didn't go our way but still a good game. Definitely not easy when we drop 3 sitters. Wasn't easy for the bowlers to control and doesn't help when you drop 3 catches. Message was simple (for Sai and Washington). Just play the game you want to play and the goal was the same for both of them to make us win. 'Because of the dew, the wicket did become little easier for us. Definitely lot of positives for us. Last 2-3 games didn't go our way but credit to all the players, especially Sai - he was terrific for us this season. 210 would've been par for us on this pitch.' Titans have been eliminated from IPL 2025 and Mumbai Indians will now play Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Sunday.
