Memorial Round 3 recap: Scottie Scheffler worked his Saturday magic again at Muirfield

Nick Taylor and Ben Griffin opened the third round of action at the 2025 Memorial atop the leaderboard at 7 under, with a host of others all in the running. Here's a look at all of Saturday's action. Scottie Scheffler is right in position Tell me if you've heard this one before: Scottie Scheffler is in contention to win another PGA Tour event. Advertisement The best player in the world was even through 13 holes on Saturday during the third round of play and then rolled off four birdies in his last five holes to get right back at the top of the leaderboard. His final birdie on No. 18 pushed him to 8 under par. Scheffler has two victories and eight top-10 finishes in 11 starts this year and he hasn't finished outside the top 8 in his last half-dozen starts. This third-round run is nothing new, as stats guru Justin Ray can attest: Ben Griffin takes 5-stroke lead While others are struggling with the conditions, Ben Griffin is cruising, as he's moved out to a 5-stroke lead. His first birdie of the day came on the sixth hole, and he followed with two more on 7 and 8 to improve to 10 under as he approaches the turn. Advertisement Griffin opened the day tied with Nick Taylor at 7 under, but Taylor opened with consecutive bogies and has since shot par on five straight holes to remain alone in second at 5 under. Jordan Spieth is making a move Don't look now, but Jordan Spieth is making a move during the third round of play. It's been another wild day for Spieth, who has six birdies and four bogeys through his first 16 holes, but he's worked his way just a couple strokes from leader Ben Griffin. It's been a good stretch of golf for Rickie Fowler of late, as he posted a 29 for nine during the Charles Schwab at Colonial and has now worked his way into the top 10 at the Memorial with a 69 on Saturday. Taylor drops two strokes to start, Griffin alone in lead Griffin did what he did for most of Friday's competition, shooting par on the opening hole to stay at 7 under, but his playing partner wasn't so lucky. Taylor's 24-foot putt for par on the first hole missed by two feet, dropping him to 6 under for the day and one stroke behind Griffin. He followed with another bogey on No. 2, meaning Griffin had a two-stroke lead early on. -- Columbus Dispatch Sepp Straka is having birdie fun at Memorial On Saturday, Sepp Straka notched a half-dozen birdies in a round for the second day in a row en route to posting a 66. "Any time you're on a tee, you can either make a double or you can make a birdie. It's one of those courses where there's a lot of volatility, and today I executed pretty well, judged my lies very well, and judged the wind very well, which I did not do the first two days." As of 4:30 p.m., Straka is in fourth place, 3 under and in a five-way tie with Jordan Spieth and others. Scoring is difficult at Memorial on Saturday The course is playing difficult today at the Memorial as just four players as of 1:30 p.m. are under par for the round. The leaders have yet to go off, but it's still a sign that a low number will be able to make a big jump today, as the majority of players are giving strokes away. Only Sepp Straka is more than one under for the day thus far, as his two birdies in the first seven holes have pushed him into the top 20 at 1 over for the tournament. Ben Griffin stays on his heater, goes low and leads in early going at 2025 Memorial Ben Griffin is on a roll. Five days after winning his first individual title on the PGA Tour, which was his second win following a team victory a month ago, Griffin posted a 7-under 65 to kick start his 2025 Memorial Tournament. Griffin had three birdies and an eagle in his first eight holes and then bounced back from consecutie bogeys on Nos. 11 and 12 to record four more birdies over his final five holes, including three straight on the 16th, 17th and 18th. All in all, it's a great start for Griffin in Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. A week ago, after winning at Colonial Country Club, he talked about the significance and the history of the venue. "It's really incredible to have lifted that trophy on 18 with so many incredible names and greats in the game of golf, he said last Sunday after the Charles Schwab Challenge. "I'm very blessed to be where I am in my career to even consider myself a champion along with those guys. It's been a lot of hard work that's gone into this, and it's an awesome place for me to get my first individual win and such a historical venue." Well, he's on track to win at another historic golf course dubbed Jack's Place.

Jason Day, a member at Muirfield Village Golf Club, out of 2025 Memorial with sore wrist DUBLIN, Ohio — Westerville, Ohio, resident and Muirfield Village Golf Club member Jason Day is sitting out the 2025 Memorial Tournament because of soreness in his left wrist. "Unfortunately, I won't be able to compete in the Memorial," Day messaged tournament officials last week. "I've had some discomfort in my left wrist and after consulting with my doctor he recommended I take the week off to rest and recover. "I always look forward to playing in Ohio at Jack's event each year," Day wrote. "As a member at Muirfield we are quite honored to recognize Barbara Nicklaus as this year's honoree. I look forward to returning in 2026." Day, 37, last missed the Memorial in 2021, when a back injury forced him to withdraw. His only other absence came in 2011. His best finish in 15 appearances is a tie for fourth in 2020. Day has also been struggling with a back issue that caused him to withdraw from the May 8-11 Truist Championship. Day was dealing with a herniated disc near his neck, but returned to play in the PGA Championship a week later, where he missed the cut. Day's season has included three top-10 finishes, including a tie for eighth at the Masters. Last year at the Memorial, the former world No. 1 stayed in his RV in his Westerville driveway to simulate a typical tournament week on the road. The driveway to fairway system began in 2020, when Day tied for fourth at the Memorial. Needless to say, with his injury, he'll be sleeping in his own bed this week.
